“"ROYAL RIP OFF"”
Reviewed 17 October 2010

"Royal Rip Off"
To Hotel Management,
by the present, be advised that sleeping accommodations is not just a bed, but also a proper sleeping environment. A properly heated room should be a priority for a four star hotel.
Royal William Hotel does not offer this type of service.
As per staff, this is the first mention of this problem. If you read the other comments on this board you will see that they also offer Royal lies. As per post by travelbee1209, they know that they have a Royal problem.
After 5 hours of complaints, (i.e. 4:30 in the morning) we got the staff to cut the whole heating system in our room. The system was actually pushing air conditioned air, (when it's 40 degrees F. outside) This brought the room to an unbearably cold temperature.
We were told that management would contact us on this matter. I.E. Another LIE… They never contacted us. Oh, that’s right, we paid so now, why should they contact us… Royal Hypocrites.
Also note that as per classification, "A 4-Star hotel is much more comfortable and larger, and provides excellent cuisine (table d'hote and a la carte), room service, and other amenities." We were sent to a local restaurant down the street. All that was available at the Royal Rip Off was water from the bathroom tap. (Is that table d'hote, or a la carte?) Hotel Classification as per http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/hotel.html
Now, If you have a car, you have to pay dearly for parking. Another Royal Rip Off…
According to classifications mentioned by www.businessdictionary.com/definition/hotel.html. this Royal Establishment would receive a two star rating at best.
Conclusion: If you want to sleep in Quebec City... Be forewarned… Go elsewhere…

We sincerely hope that tripadvisor does not remove this review. We may be contacted at any time, but let the truth be heard.

My stay in Quebec was great. I strongly recommend Hotel Royal William. Close to the Old City and the staff was very helpful especially a young man in the front desk named Antoine.

I travelled with some friends to Quebec and stayed at the Royal William. THe hotel was reasonably priced, clean and comfortable. The restuarant was being renoved (as at May 2010 and obviously for a while to come). The staff were very helpful, giving advice on where to eat and shop in Quebec and what to see. The reception staff all all spoke good English. The hotel is within walking distance of the old town - but only if you are pretty fit because the walk is all uphill. There are good restaurants out the back of the hotel on St Joseph - I particularly recommend Le Postino.

Okay, so my husband and I went during Labor Day weekend. We went to Hotel William Royal thinking that this was a boutique with European style. So we didn't have expectations as if this was going to be the Four Seasons. Anyway, we get to the front desk, and the man is nice and welcoming. We get to our room, and yes, like the reviews say, they are HUGE! But, there's this musky smell and darkened lighting. It seemed a bit ghetto. And, granted, I'm not a huge hotel snob, but this was bad. The temperature heater wasn't working, and so we went back downstairs to ask the front desk if they could fix it. So, it's more central heating/ac that is controlled at the front desk, i.e. we can't control the temperature in our own rooms. But, that was menial since the temperature was to our liking anyway. So, we lie on the bed, and it's kind of like those mattresses that have no cushion and you can feel the springiness. I inspect the sheets, and there's this stain on it! We tried to make the best out of it and saw that there was a dvd selection that we could get from the front desk. We got the dvd, and it was all in french with no option for English subtitles! Whoopie. Also, the fitness center- wow. So, we ask the front desk if they had a gym, and he kind of laughed and said, "Hm, Yes, but it's small." So we go to the second floor, and we look for a gym, then we see the door. We open it, and it's a room that is about 8'x8' with a treadmill and a rowing machine....that's it. Okay, besides all this.. the perks was the free breakfast, the 10 minute walk to the city, a strip of up-and coming shops behind the hotel, and the garage. Other than that, SUCKED! This hotel was not clean, the service was mediocre, and the hotel overrall.. .was 2/10.

Go for yourselves if you want to trust the other reviews.. and write back here to let us know if I'm overreacting!

p.s. i'm sure the hotels that are closer to the city is better.

We stayed at the Royal William after booking a package for three nights. We were pleasantly surprised! Other stays in Quebec City led us to accommodations inside the walled part of the City, so we were apprehensive. But...the Royal William was not a disappointment. Very European decor, very clean, Internet access, large rooms, and very large bathrooms (all done in stone or marble)...we ate at the bistro attached several times, which was very good. The hotel has parking, so getting in and out and around was very easy. We had no problem finding parking when we left to tour the area and other parts fo the City. The staff were all very knowledgeable and able to help us make all the arrangements we needed on our stay and for what we wanted to do within the City. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. Interestingly, we met personal friends of the owners in St. Petersburg, Florida, while waiting for seating in an Italian restaurant. We asked them to be sure to give our praise and kudos to the owners...they have a beautiful and well-run hotel.

HUGE ROOM & large bathroom. Clean. Good breakfast included. Good location for new part of town. Medium walk to old part of town.

Minuses - no parking. Need to leave your car in a public car park for $12/day or find some of the free overnight street parking with a meter.

Only a ten minute walk to the most beautiful train station in Canada and old Quebec's charm, elegance and restaurants. A $6 cab ride from the heart of Old Quebec and the elevator to upper old Quebec (where the Hotel Frontenac is situated). Everything was perfect and the restaurant breakfast was delicious - the best home made preserves! We'd definitely go back to the Royal William.
