“Beautiful and loved the staff!”
Reviewed 30 December 2011

The Le Clos St-Louis was a great place to stay. My wife and I stayed for a couple of days on our honeymoon and we both loved it. Before coming to the hotel we stayed several nights at the Chateau and it was great but would have been happy spending our entire stay at the Le Clos St-Louis. The staff was very friendly and willing to help us with everything we needed. They helped us find good restaurants in the city, plan our day trips (I would recommend dog sledding if you have the time), changed the thermostat to cater to our needs, and even had movies to play in the DVD players at no charge!! To say the least we loved the staff and would definitely come back to this beautiful hotel in a beautiful city!!

One thing you should know before you plan your trip is that it is more of a hotel than a bed and breakfast. Meaning you have to go down to the breakfast room for your complimentary breakfast.

Room Tip: Room 10 was a beautiful room with plenty of space! I wouldn't change a thing about it! One thing...

The fireplace is for decoration only, the chairs are uncomfortable, and when one is awakened in the middle of the night by the bright light outside the back of the hotel because the shutters do not close properly, the staff "try" yo fix it - and tell one to calm down as opposed to apologizing for the lack of adequate window treatments to block out out the light. The rooms are uncomfortably small. There is an overall sense of stuffy claustrophobia in the place. There is no place to relax outside the cluttered rooms. Space utilization in the rooms is very poor - 2 drawers serve as the dresser but to get to them one has to move a chair.

When we complained about the room we were reminded about the pictures on the internet. Lets just say that these pictures do not capture the entire experience.

What a disappointment this place turned out to be. We chose it because we'd heard the Chateau Frontenac since being taken over by the Fairmont group had lost its authenticity. Well, this hotel is just disheveled uncomfortable.

Complaining about the situation led to a great deal of sighing on the part of the gentleman at the front desk, admonitions to calm down and no results.

When we watched tv to try to relax, this did not work. I went outside into the common area and the proprietor / clerk threatened to call the police because I might cause a disturbance.

At no time did he offer to help. We requested a car rental to leave the general area of Quebec. He was not compliant. He was, in a way that is stereotypically rude - (unfortunately stereotypes are correct some of the time) in a manner associated with the Quebecois, condescending and insulting on the one hand but inordinately sensitive on the other.

The stay was traumatic and unpleasant in the extreme. God help anyone who has difficulties that the help feel is beyond their "pay scale" to solve! Watch out - if you watch TV or try to use the common areas, the police will be called, especially if you express dissatisfaction with the repeated failures to solve the problem.

Their best solution was to send us out in the middle of the night to an hotel not of our choosing rather than attempt to make us more comfortable. Perhaps the idea of French Canadian hospitality is an oxymoron!

Merry Christmas!

Room Tip: Avoid this place - do not complain and expect your problems or difficulties to be taken care of. The...

Ahegarty;

We understand that this client will not be coming to our facilities based on her last experience. However it is important to mention that after reviewing the case with our staff, clients at the hotel, all the people who intervened, and our provincial hotel association in detail.
We came to the conclusion that the hotel management did everything we could under the circumstances.
We are sorry that our accommodations or service did not meet her expectations during her short stay of 4.5 hours that did not include an overnight stay.
We can assure future customers that every day; we strive to be the best and they can verify that by our great score on Trip Advisor or any other hotel’s review sites.

Our warmest regard

I stayed for a little over a week in August of 2011. During the summer, you're paying a hefty amount to stay in a decent, but not fabulous, B&B. Which, by the way, does not serve breakfast. You'll most likely grab something in the Old Quebec. And, it won't be good, because, quite frankly, 99% of the restaurants open for breakfast in Old Quebec suck. Back to Les Clos: Basically, what it is, is an expensive and well maintained B&B. I found the front desk staff, including the owner, to be stiff and quite frankly, non too pleasant. If you book a room for a certain amount of days, well, you're going to pay for those days, whether you stay the full amount or not. This makes it hard, if all even two days in advanced, you want to travel to other parts of Quebec and stay over night. When I asked if we could get a break, and even said that we'd come back in two days and stay the rest of the three or four nights (with a deposit), I was told "no!" The rooms were specifically booked for me and it would be hard to fill them during my absence. Which I thought was funny, considering the place had a decent amount of vacancies. AND my room was on the top floor of this man made mountain. So, breakfast and non-negotiable room rates. Not for me. I learned my lesson. Next time, I'm renting an apartment, or a farm house on Orleans Island. It'll be cheaper and I can cook my own breakfast. The maids/cleaning ladies were very nice and did an excellent job at keeping my room intact. I left them a nice Brooklynese, paison like tip.

Room Tip: If you decide to spend the crazy amount of cash, AVOID Rooms 24 & 25. They're very well appo...

>Dear Sir :
I thank you for taking the time to share with the readers of Trip Advisor your evaluation on the service received at Hotel Le Clos Saint-Louis while in Quebec City last August.

We are sorry that your stay with us did not meet your expectations. We understand your frustration, but since we are a small independent hotel with 18 rooms any changes made at the last minute on a booked reservation effects us greatly. That is the reason why we have policies and procedures in place. Our website does explain in great details the services provided, policies and procedures, therefore we are surprise at your disappointment. Being well aware, you chose the Hotel Le Clos Saint-Louis and you received the service that is offered and outlined.

We are certain you can understand that our small establishment cannot answer every client’s fantasy, at time it is possible and other times just impossible at the last minute.

We encourage people who want to make reservations at a specific establishment, to read carefully the rules and procedures offered and to make sure they answer your ne

Hotel Le Clos Saint-Louis is a wonderful B&S with a most delightful owner, Ghyslaine Donais, who has a sense of style and great taste in antiques. As two couples, we stayed for several days and had the best time imaginable. Staying at Le Clos is more like a visit to a friend's home than a hotel, a trip back in time to the earl 1900s with beautifully decorated rooms, comfortable beds, all the modern conveniences although well concealed and not at all intrusive, and the most accommodating hostess one could expect to meet. The location is right in the heart of the old Haute Ville and a stone's throw from some of the best French cuisine we have ever tasted--from classic to country. You cannot possiby go wrong with a stay at this fine B&B.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the hotel are not exposed to street noise, which while not terrible, some perso...

It has been some time since we stayed here but had to write a quick review as it is one of our favorite places we have ever stayed at. The reception staff was warm, friendly and helpful. The location was perfect. The room was large, tastefully decorated and comfortable. I purchased fresh fruit and pastries one afternoon, made tea in our room with the amenities they provided and brought it out to the parlor. It was wonderful. Breakfast was included and was great. They offered a business room where you can check email on their computer. We loved Quebec City and really enjoyed this charming B & B.

This is a small boutique-type hotel with lots of character - definitely not a cookie cutter lodging. We didn't view all the rooms, but each one we saw was unique with very much the feel of a French country inn with modern amenities and conveniences. Location is on a fairly quiet section of rue Saint-Louis and is ideal if you don't have a car because it's within easy walking distance of many restaurants and most city sites you'll likely want to visit. Because we had no car we opted for a half-day bus tour to outlying sites and were picked up and dropped off at the hotel. Expect a very friendly, helpful, but not overbearing staff including Paul-Emile, Luc and owner Madame Donais. During our three-day stay in October a full breakfast with several cooked options was prepared daily by Madame Donais and served restaurant style at tables by staff in a cozy breakfast room. Again, no cookie cutter pre-cooked buffet here.

Room Tip: No elevator, so choose your room accordingly.

We came from England to stay in this hotel for 4 nights for my aunt's wedding. I cannot recommend this hotel enough. The proprietor went out of her way to make arrangements for the wedding prior to our arrival, and had prepared the salon for the wedding for us to see when we arrived. She had thought of everything. Thankyou so much, Madame.

Aside from being warm, cosy and inviting, with excellent facilities, staying in this hotel is a fantastic 'experience'. Situated within the walls of the old part of Quebec, staying in this hotel is like taking a trip back in time to provincial France, each room decorated individually with beautiful fabrics and gorgeous antiques. Just beautiful. Walk to fantastic restaurants and bars in minutes, both within the old walls and beyond.

We cannot express what a perfect time we had in this city. Staying in such a unique and beautiful hotel made all the difference.

On our next trip to Quebec, we will certainly be staying here. Thankyou for a wonderful stay!

Room Tip: Some rooms are on a central AC system and some are individually regulated. We would have preferred t...
