“quiet weekend spot”
Reviewed 15 August 2011

We just returned from a 3 night stay at Maison du Fort and enjoyed every minute of it.

The room was spotless and inviting. The herringbone hardwood floors, rich molding details and deep windows are gorgeous. The windows open wide and we can see the St. Lawrence River down the street. Our room (number 1) had a pretty, nonworking fireplace and a chandelier with dimmer switch. The bathrooms are updated. The room had a good, historic feel, but with modern comfort.

One of the best aspects of the hotel is the location. It's in the upper part of Old Quebec, right between the Citadel and the Promenade. So it's easy to walk to shops, restaurants, and lower town. You can see the river from the front door. The inn is practically adjacent to Battlefields Park, which has beautiful sunken gardens, paths, rolling hills and fountains. But magically the inn is on a quiet side street with very few cars and just the occasional car or horse carriage. It makes for a peaceful stay.

The owner, Marielle, speaks both English and French, is super helpful with directions and when making reservations. And her two kitties are so sweet to see around the hallways.

The breakfast is called a "pre-breakfast" and just includes juice, coffee, tea and some breads, nothing very interesting, but it was nice to have something to drink before heading out for the day.

Overall we REALLY enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. I can imagine just how cozy it would be in winter!

We chose Maison du Fort based on the positive reviews on TripAdvisor, and we were very pleased with our stay. We have 2 young children (2 and 4) and Room 6 is perfect for us. Very tasteful decorations, comfortable beds, spacious room, and helpful and friendly hostess! We wanted a reservation for 4 nights but the room is only available for 2 nights, Marielle was very helpful to suggest that we checked with a nearby hotel (she gave me the number) and that's what we did. Maison du Fort is definitely the superior hotel (I was really puzzled that it was rated as 2-star while the other less-desirable hotel next door was 3-star). We visited during the annual SAQ New France Festival which was a lot of fun. A great family vacation. Will recommend this hotel to anyone!

My mother and I just returned from a three night stay at Maison du Fort. The location was perfect. A very short walk to Hotel Frontenac and surrounding shops and cafes. We could see the river from our window.
Our room was wonderful. We stayed in room 6. Two large beds, two recliner chairs, two smaller chairs, a flat screen tv in an armoir and a fireplace. Four large windows on two sides with interior wood shutters to block light and windows that swung open to reveal screens. The room has air conditioning if needed. We just opened the windows. The hotel's street has very little traffic but being on the street you can get some noise late evening and early morning but we had our windows open. I think the noise would be minimal with closed windows. Wonderful molding and light fixtures.
The hotel has internet access; the password is provided in the room.
The room was spotless. Not even a speck of dust anywhere.
A light breakfast was provided downstairs. Juice, tea, coffee, and an assortment of breads, pastries and cookies which varied daily. Trays were provided to take the goodies to our room to enjoy.
Marielle was very welcoming and available to help with any questions.
I normally do not like to stay in the same place twice but Maison du Fort would be the exception if I were to return to Quebec City.

We didn't want to pay the exorbitant prices that Chateau Frontenac was charging but we wanted to stay inside the walls of old Quebec City. After seeing the good reviews on TripAdvisor for "Maison du Fort", we decided to stay there. The reviews were right and we had a lovely time. We were warmly greeted by Marielle, who provided us with a map of Quebec City and explained where all the attractions were. Everything we wanted to do was in walking distance of the Maison du Fort. My wife loved the two cats that greeted people coming in the front door, as well as all the cat decorations around the Maison. Our room was very well kept and had a traditional "old Quebec City" feel to it. Mornings started out with coffee, juice, and some pasteries that were always delicious. When we go back to Quebec City, we'll definitely stay at the Maison du Fort again.

Room Tip: If you aren't in good shape, try to get a room with a lower number as there are many stairs to g...

We stayed at Maison du Fort for 4 nights - end of July - beginning of August. Like many others who stayed here, I liked what I read in the Tripadvisor reviews. The location was perfect as it was between the 2 main areas - the Grande Allee where there are wonderful restaurants and nightlife and the walled city itself of vieux Quebec which is where Maison du Fort is. Quebec City is a beautiful city - but be warned - wear comfy shoes as the streets are VERY hilly. Maison du Fort is on a quiet street away from the hustle and bustle - and just up the hill from the boardwalk. Marielle was so nice. She couldn't do enough for her guests - she makes everyone feel so welcome and special. Upon arrival, Marielle's 2 cats will greet you (Piano and Zetca???) and Marielle goes over a map of the city with you circling all the nearby areas of interest which she gives you. She will even give you great restaurant suggestions if you ask. Our luggage did not make our flight so it was put on a later flight and sent via courier to our hotel and Marielle stayed up till about 11:00 waiting for it to arrive. She didn't seem to mind a bit. We stayed in Room 9 which was lovely. It was a good size room - with a small sitting area with a table and 2 chairs. The new a/c was really appreciated as it was very hot and humid during our stay. It had a nice sized bathroom with a tub/shower and it was exceptionally clean. There was a basket of amenities which surprised me - shampoo, body lotion, bath gel, shower cap, sewing kit - and even Lavendar Bath Salts and a night light in case you wanted one in the bathroom. I expect this in regular hotels but this seemed more a B & B. There was a hair dryer in the bathroom as well. We had a small flat screen TV in our room too which has a built in DVD player. We didn't use the DVD function as we did not know that was available but had we known we probably would have brought a movie to watch while recouping from the day's excursions. The morning coffee, tea, juice and baked goods were a real treat as well. It really was like staying with a good friend who happened to have a fantastic home right in the heart of old Quebec City. {{{ Hugs to Marielle }}} - ma belle amie. More pictures to follow but here are a few.

I was travelling alone to a conference and decided against a big hotel. I was delighted to find the Maison du Fort was so comfortable and friendly. I was in room 2 on the ground floor. The air conditioning and free wifi were unexpected and very welcome, and the room included all the facilities expected in a 4* hotel - except for the TV which was a tiny screen set on the window ledge- but since I was busy this did not matter. The provision of a small face towel marked "for make-up" was a sensible suggestion! The close proximity to the conference centre and the main tourist attractions was great- brief walking distance. Quebec seems uphill whichever way you go, but the directions given were accurate and helpful. The breakfast with fresh buns and coffee was delicious, and I took the food back into my room on a tray rather than sitting in the rather small breakfast room.
The house cats were both friendly and reminded me of home - what more could you want in a short stay?

Room Tip: not room 2 if you want to watchTV!
