“The Best”
Reviewed 3 November 2009

Ah, Maison du Fort, Marielle, Quebec City, what can I say that hasn't already been said? We chose well for our stay. The location is excellent, just a block or two from everything you want to do in Vieux Quebec. No wonder Maison du Fort was given Trip Advisor's Traveler's Choice Award for 2009. Marielle is simply the best. Upon our arrival she immediately told us we should go to the last night of the light show production, The Image Mill. Without her advice we would have missed the most amazing light show projected onto 81 grain silos. Marielle happily answers all your questions and never rushes you. She wants you to enoy Quebec City to the fullest and she knows her town well. Her rooms are immaculate and very comforting at the end of a day of Quebec City exploration. (We stayed in #5 and #9) she calls her breakfast a starter breakfast but it served us well as breakfast. If you wish, you can take your food to your room and relax into the morning. I really can't say enough or use enough superlatives in writing this review, especially since it has all been said before. We hope to take our granddaughter to Quebec City next summer and we definitely want to stay there. We'll ALWAYS want to stay there when we visit.

Marielle, the proprietor of Hotel Maison du Fort, warmly greeted us upon arrival and personally escorted us to our room. We stayed in Room 1 on the first floor. The room was spectacular. I am not embellishing when I say you will not find a cleaner hotel room anywhere. We had all the space we needed. And even though we were on the first floor, you had all the privacy you needed and things were always very quite. In the morning, Marielle sets out fresh baked goods, coffee, tea, and juice. A great way to start your day. This place feels more like a home than a hotel, and that alone is worth the price of the stay. Oh yeah, and as far as the price is concerned, Maison du Fort is very affordable given its location (literally 2 minutes walk from the Frontenac and the Terrase Dufferin). We plan on coming here and sharing out Quebec vacations with Marielle for years to come.

Maison du Fort is made by its attentive owner, Marrielle. She was genuinely interested in all the guests & ensuring they had a good stay. The rooms & facilities are not extraordinary but they are attractive, well thought out and spotlessly clean. Nothing is too much trouble for Marielle and her breakfasts, although simple, are fresh & delicious (the muffins were still warm!). The location could not be improved, relatively quiet yet within a few minutes walk of Quebec's highlights.

We spent 4 nights at the end of September 2009 at Maison Du Fort and had a wonderful stay. Marielle the owner is amazing - she welcoming, friendly, helpful with recommendations and maps, and runs a great B and B. The B and B is close to everything. We stayed in room # 10 - it is on the 3rd floor - but the view is so nice - could see the St. Lawrence river and the top of the Frontenac - which is a short two block stroll. We peeked in on the "double bed " rooms they were very small. If you haven't traveled to Canada yet - get ready to pay high taxes..about 14% IN QUEBEC - BUT we loved every minute of it - the price may be high - but they all are there! It was worth it. Marielle has breads, muffins, coffee, tea and juice ready in the little dining room area each morning till at least 10:30 or so. The dining room is not a place to eat - we took our things up to our room - there is a little sofa there to sit on but we chose to eat in our rooms. Our room was spacious - queen bed - little desk, and two comfy chairs, windows everywhere - and great bathroom. We had 4 nights there so we did intend to sight see in the area and the leaves were starting to turn - so was gorgeous. We spend two days looking at the upper and lower town. We got tickets to the boat ride (The Jolliet) that is an hour and a half ride - maybe $15.00 per person - but worth it -Marielle gave us a disocunt card - so ask her for that. We spent one day sightseeing out of Quebec City - which we highly recommend. The Il D'Orleans (small island) - a 20 minute drive is so worth the drive - quaint little towns and a nice little church, little cottages - so scenic with the leaves turning and the nice view of the water - just a wonderful drive - maybe takes 30 mintues to see it.....then we drove to St. Anne's Basillica - well worth the time to visit - gorgeous inside and massive outside - been to Europe many times and it is jsut as nice! Then the traveled to "The Canyon" near St Anne Beau pre - it a gorge with gorgeous falls and 2 suspenion bridges - a little scary but so worth it - was worth the trip - we got there at 3:30 and they close at 5 and we were out of there by then. Back in town - Marielle suggested we visit the Farmers Market on the lower part of town - small but nice. The food was amazing - can recocmmend 4 places we ate dinner - all great - but remember the taxes are terribly high...! We always order a bottle of wine - and the price of wine is crazy there too - but you have to eat!! :)) We recommend Le Lobby - on St. Louis for 79.00 including a bottle of wine - which was good and a reasonable price too . Our splurge was the Aux Anciens Canadiens (pricey place but we knew that) - great place with traditional Canadian food - I had caribou and my husband had the pheasant - both great - but that caribou was the BEST! We ate at Le Petit Chateau - their specailty are crepes and fondue. We both ordered crepes and they are HUGE servings - they serve them open face filled to the brim with toppings.......amazing and yummy. The last night we dined at Le Cafe Du Paris - very good food. All in all the prices for meals are much more expensive than the US - but the food was top notch!.
We had a great time there - a good location and a comfy place. ......PARKING IS 15 - 20 BUCKS A DAY!!!...NO WAY AROUND IT!!! GO SEE QUEBEC CITY!! Also be ready for lots of walking in Old Quebec City - lots of hills

We had the honor of staying in this small hotel during the week of september 12-17. Marielle greeted us with a huge smile, even though we arrived after 9 p.m. We had room 10. This was a beautiful upstairs room with a fabulous view of the Chateau. The hotel becomes the definition of the word CLEAN. It is truly impeccable!! Location was terrific for all of the old city activities and sights. We would love to return to this hotel and the same room. The room was out of a french storybook with lace curtains, hardwood floors, window box seats, and a great four poster bed. We recommend this hotel highly.

Maison du Fort is delightful, with 10 guest rooms in a carefully restored and beautifully decorated 19th century house. You really feel like you're a guest in someone's home rather than in a hotel, but still with ample privacy. The location is close to sights, shops, restaurants, and the funicular to the lower town, but on a quiet street. The rooms are very comfortable and well-appointed, each with a different color scheme and furnishings. Owner and host Marielle is cheerful, friendly, and fluent in French and English, and she offers excellent recommendations for sights and dining. The two resident cats are a wonderful bonus!

My husband and I stayed here over the long weekend (we are from Ontario) along with married friends of ours from Maine. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival and promptly given a map of the city along with entertainment suggestions for the weekend. Very close to the downtown core, with the Chateau Frontenac a mere two blocks around the corner. Down-to-earth owner lives at the location but in a separate attachment to the hotel along with her friendly cats. Fresh baked goods every morning with coffee and tea. Every room has a funny little cat decor to it but contributes to the atmosphere. No air conditioner unfortunately but fairly airy - temperature goes down to cool the summer evenings in Quebec City. Parking is approximately two blocks away and rooms don't have mini bar fridges, however if you bring a small cooler, ice can be purchased at a convenience store about three blocks away. Can't beat the location for the price and the lovely owner, who speaks both French and English, makes this feel more like a quaint B&B than an impersonal large hotel. I would definitely go back and recommend to anyone.
