“Bedbugs - beware”
Reviewed 23 September 2010

It looked like a good bargain with friendly staff in a great location, but nothing makes up for bed bugs.

My wife and daughter slept in one bed and didn't get bitten, but I wasn't so lucky. I woke up with bites all over on my shoulder and foot.

I guess that's what I get for trying a one star hotel. Never again!

It's a bit pricey for the average backpacker, but you pay for the great location. Walking distance from everything there is to see. Located on a romantic, small cobble stone street. I would go to the hostel next time for the price but I would still recommend to a couple for a nice weekend getaway.

This little hotel has only a couple of rooms and lies in uptown Quebec inside the City Walls. The top level (2nd) has three rooms w/o bathroom (but with washbasin), a shared bathroom (1 shower, 1 toilet) is on that level. Staying up there is cheaper. As this building is so old, the doors are very small and the frames pretty low. Our room was entirely wood lined and quite small. Bed was OK, and the street is quiet at night. All floors and our room has carpet. It was clean and absolutely acceptable for the price.
Unfortunately, no car parking lot is provided. The car has to go into the municipal garage 5 min away, which costs $16 for 24 hrs, take that into account when looking at room prices. And funny enough, the receptionists are rather poor in English, they did not even understand the word "baggage". Generally, however, is was a good choice for us, even with a little 3 months old baby.

  • Liked — Good value and close to everything inside the Old City
  • Disliked — No parking lot

My school booked us a room there for one night. The room was simple but warm and comfortable. Bathroom is tiny but nice anyway. The cachet of this old building makes you feel like you're in France. But the best is the courtyard! Nice quiet private yard with old wooden tables and chairs, big trees and ... wow! I just loved this place! Only one-star hotel though, no room service, no phone. We had the room and cable tv, that's it.

  • Liked — The courtyard
  • Disliked — Lack of services (bar, phone, internet access, parking)

First the good parts to Maison St Ursule, and there are some. It's in a great location, in the old city, within the walls, on a street lined with hotels and just a short distance from Rue St. Jean, one of the most important tourist streets in the old city. The room was very clean. The manager was extra-friendly and helpful with directions and good advice about restaurants and attractions.

Now the bad part. Based on our experience, the rooms are the most basic possible. Ours was a first floor unit that looked out on a rustic courtyard that once had been pretty and now was weed-infested. When we booked, they told us there was room for the four of us (two beds) and a cot for the kid. They were wrong. The room was cramped with almost no amenities except a TV. The bathroom was tiny, featuring the smallest shower I've ever seen. The bed was ok, the pillows as flat as flapjacks.

There was no phone. Instead of air conditioning (and yes, it does get hot in Quebec City sometimes) there was a circulating fan, just like Mom used to have. It was not only hot, it was humid. Had we stayed a couple of days, we might have been able to grow mildew in our shoes, and in other places, too. Other guests would sit in the courtyard and smoke cigarettes, which was fine except that the smell of smoke would enter the room when you opened the door.

The hotel does not offer parking, but that's not really a problem., because there's a big city garage a few short blocks away. And if you're going to be walking around the old city, you need to know that this hotel, like many on Rue St Ursule, is up a very steep hill from Rue St Jean, which is where a lot of really good restaurants are. If you have any trouble getting around, you may want to think twice about a two block long uphill trek on foot. Plan on a cab, perhaps.

Sometimes you get more than you pay for. Not here. This is truly economy lodging at an economy price. We took it because other places at around the same price were booked. (We paid $119 for the night here). Knowing what we know now, we would not stay here again. If we could not find better accommodations at the price, we would pay up to do better.

The hotel was not what we expected. And we expected an intimate atmosphere with nice period furniture and a decent restroom. What we got was a tiny small room on the top floor of the old house, with nice big windows, a super tiny bathroom and not a very comfortable bed. The worst thing was that the hotel did not have AC and we stayed there where the temperatures were high (over 30 C/90 F) and nights were nightmares - keeping the windows open did not help at all because it was also humid. The room (#5) was also on the front side of the house and noise from the street, especially early in the morning, was really annoying. I think that maybe other rooms in the rear of the building are bigger and the street noise does not bother as much, but still, the bathrooms are very tiny and uncomfortable.
If I would recommend this place to anyone, it would be to students that are going to stay there when there is a cooler weather.

The location and price were unbeatable, BUT...to reach the room you had to go up a set of outdoor stairs from the courtyard. The stairs were very narrow with high steps. Very difficult to manage with luggage. The room was minuscule (barely large enough to contain the bed). Since it was located right in Old Quebec, we expected period architecture. Our room had hideous seventies panneling and a very shabby seventies rug. The only original feature in the room was the window. It's design meant that you could not have the window open without having the curtains open. The window also had no screen. If you wished to cool off with an open window and the fan sitting atop the dresser, you would wake up covered in bug-guts. The bed was also very old and uncomfortable. The room included a private bath, but that was also exceptionally tiny.

  • Disliked — Tiny room with no air-conditioning.
