Auberge Place D'Armes
Ranked #8 of 102 Hotels in Quebec City
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 16 June 2011

This place is a gem. Located right at the heart of the Upper Old Town, on Place D'Armes and looking out onto the Chateau Frontenac, you would be hard pushed to find somewhere better for the price.
The Reception team are fabulous and nothing is too much trouble - they are happy to provide you with plenty of information and insider knowledge which you won't find in the guide books. If you don't speak French it really doesn't matter a they are very happy to chat with you in English. They will even arrange for your laundry (washing as opposed to Dry Cleaning) to be done for you overnight by Yvette in their own laundry, for a very reasonable price. You drop it off before 11pm to Reception and it is back at Reception beautifully folded for you, by 7am the next morning! Now that's service!
The rooms are beautiful and appointed with everything you could wish for. You even get chocolates left on your pillow each evening. Nice touch.
The only downside is the breakfasts. For some strange reason they pile everything all onto one plate! Savoury (omlette & sautéed potatoes), toast, jam & fruit ... and the orange juice they serve is very cheap and nasty. And, they don't do buttermilk pancakes! :o(
However, I loved this Auberge and would definitely recommend it and go back again. It's excellent value and wonderfully serviced.

I spent 3 days in this hotel with my wife and we had a great time at the Place d'Armes. First, service was great! Very corteous reception, restaurant and even cleaning personnel, ready to help for any need or request. Position is central in uptown old Quebec. If you plan to spend most of the time in the area inside the walls then there is no better place for price/quality ratio. If you are planning to stroll in the shopping area of the lower Quebec, outside the walls, then you will need to use the stairs or the funicular many times.
The room was a little small but we were lucky to have a room at the corner (room 6) with 2 windows overlooking Place d'Armes and a great view of the Frontenac castle, plus the activities from the street below. The furniture was modern, a little funky, but in taste, while the room itself, with exposed stone walls and wooden beams, was classic-romantic. The mix, somehow, worked well. Bathroom was great with a comfortable shower and excellent toiletries. Breakfast was varied and excellent, so was the restaurant Pain Beni (we tried it at dinner). Will strongly recommend for couples, not so much for families with small children since there are a lot of steps and no elevator (plus the rooms are a little small).

Bonjour Frombaritomiami,

Merci, merci for such nice comments. Our dedicated staff makes the différence : Candida, one of the cleaning ladies, has been working with us for 8 years now and she, as the other members of our team, tries to anticipate the needs of our guests in order to make your stay a unique experience.
The rooms with stone or brick walls with the mix of hand-made designer furniture or antiques give each of them their unicity. As you experienced, even some bathrooms have those stone walls, thank to a very special coating that allows showers with brick walls.
We are very proud of our restaurant, the Pain Beni, which we consider a delicious ! You can start the day with a good cooked to order breakfast and enjoy a nice dinner indoor or outdoor on the patio.
We are plannig the elevator for 2012. Hope that you will be able to use it in your next stay .

Au plaisir,

My wife and I just returned from a weekend anniversary trip to beautiful Quebec City and had a great time. I chose the Auberge Place D'Armes after a lot of research and reading of reviews and will now join in and recommend this wonderful hotel.

It's so nice to find a place that is unique, has a great location and also a friendly staff. This hotel is so different from the chain hotel experience and really added an extra dimension to our trip.

The check-in was smooth and parking was easy, only a few blocks away at a garage they will direct you to (so if you are driving stop in at the front desk first and get directions). Our room had exposed stone, a jet tub and a ton of character. It was spotlessly clean and had a nice mounted flat screen tv too. We were very pleased with it.

The hotel has a great location right in the middle of everything. The Chateau Frontenac was right across the street as was the funicular or stairs to the lower city. Many restaurants were nearby as well as a side street with artists showing their works. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go.

Breakfast was included each morning. It was tasty, had good coffee, and there was a nice number of different selections.

Overall, if we are back in Quebec City we will return to this hotel. The city was a little slice of Europe in North America and this was a great homebase to explore it from.

Bonjour Nytraveler17,
Merci beaucoup for such a nice review of our hotel. An anniversary trip is special and we keep a record of it. We are proud to have been a part of your anniversary.
The hotel, as you mentioned, has a lot of character since it is 2 old buildings joined together. In our renovations we did our best to save the old walls , while adding modern amenities to provide you an unique stay. Our location in the middle of everything, as you wrote, is unique and each of our guest can walk everywhere to explore our beautiful city.
I can also add that our team is always there for you.
Merci encore and hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you again!

The hotel is very nice and the staff very helpful - we arrived mid-morning and were given our room early. We had one of the smallest rooms, which was cosy but fine for us. The breakfast, which was included in the room rate, was very good with a good range of choice. It was served in the restaurant downstairs, which although we didn't use for dinner seemed very popular. Everything is walkable in Quebec, so location isn't a big issue but this hotel is right in the heart of the city - inside the walls and next to the Le Chateau Frontenac.

We just loved the location. Despite the rain we were able to walk everywhere. We enjoyed the nice breakfast each morning. We had a wonderful young man for our waiter 4 days in a row. The staff were very accommodating giving us wine glasses when we asked immediately. Place was spotless. We were a bit disappointed in the size of our room though. Could barely turn around in it. No view at all and we did request a front room. I think the mistake was booking it on Hotels.com. I would book it with the hotel next time. The room is #12 at the very end of the 2nd floor hall. The hotel is very updated and has the best location for the price. We saved a ton of money on breakfast too.

Room Tip: Make reservation with the hotel itself.

Bonjour MarcelleM,
Merci for your nice comments and saying it is a very good value for the location and amenities. Free internet in the rooms and the public areas, complementary computer, breakfast cooked to order in our restaurant, tea and coffee available from the front desk. Aveda bath products make it a very good value, but our team makes the différence.
It will be our pleasure to guide you in the choice of your room for your next stay and make sure that you have a larger room if you so desire.
We are looking foward to your return et au plaisir !

1) The facts: This Auberge is right in the centre of the old town, next to the Anglican cathedral and about 100 metres to Chateau Frontenac. The rooms are small, quaint and quirky with exposed brick walls and beams.

2) My experience: My TV didn't work on my first night so the 2 very lovely reception ladies moved me the next day to another room (which also had an opening window which was a real bonus for me as I hate enclosed and only air-conditioned rooms). The showers are fabulous, the Aveda products provided are a real bonus and very good. There's no tea or coffee making facilities in the rooms but the reception staff happily provided me with herbal tea whenever I requested at no charge and they provided coffee for other guests as well. The breakfast is included in the tarif and provided in the downstairs restaurant. It's varied, tasty (I tried 4 or 5 of the 7 or 8 selections), they were of good quality and I enjoyed them all. There's also a complimentary computer located on the first floor for those who don't have one with them and a left luggage option if you need to avail yourself of that for a few hours before departure but after checkout. I lost some articles on the train and the same lovely receptionists contacted the railway station and followed up for me, so I was reunited with my belongings in very short time.

3) The verdict: In short, my stay in this Auberge was excellent! I would definitely return there at any time and recommend it to all of my friends. The only problem would be if you can't manage stairs as it is an old building, it has stairs and no lift. If you can manage stairs it is very worthwhile staying here and the staff move your luggage to and from your room. If you do have an opening window, be aware that you are in the middle of the old town, with restaurants etc so there's people noise into the evening. But always do as I do and take earplugs so you never have a problem anywhere you go! Don't hesitate to visit Quebec city and don't hesitate to book this Auberge if you like what you've read.

Room Tip: Ask for a window that opens if you like fresh air

Bonjour Fiskelet
Merci for that your detailed review of your expérience at Auberge Place d’Armes. Our best asset is our team and I am happy that they resolved quickly the problem with your room and followed up rapidly with your luggages. We try hard to give each guest a truly mémorable expérience of Quebec.
Having a restaurant in as small hotel as ours is an asset, we can always offer you fresh coffee and tea without the hassle for you and even bring our excellent breakfeast to your room if you so wish.
As for the elevator, maybe it will be there for your next visit since it is on our plans for 2012
Thanks again and it will be pleasure to welcome you again.

My wife and i are spending our last night here of a 3 night stay. The Auberge is in a great location in the upper part of the old city. We have been able to walk everywhere without getting sore feet due to the great location. The rooms are tastefully decorated with a slight old world french feel, but nice and modern. The bathroom is a great size, with a beautiful rain shower and large tub with jets. It also has heated floors which was great when the weather was 2 degrees outside! The breakfast that is included is quite decent with a choice of 6 different options and is served in Pain Benni which is their funky little restaurant near reception. There is good free wifi, big flat screen tv's comfy furniture and good sized rooms with plenty of space for our 2 big suitcases and other stuff. Our corner room has a brilliant view of Le Chateau Frontenac (room 3), great for watching the going's on outside from the windows that open. The hotel is a short walk to the funicular that will take you to lower town or bring you back up! Check out Le Lapin Saute (Rue Petit Champlain) in Lower town - a great French restaurant with reasonable prices!

Room Tip: we stayed in room # 3 - a superior double room

Bonjour Nathanzed,
Merci for taking time to give us a feedback on your stay. What an excellent review and I agree with you our location is fantastic. At the corner of rue Ste-Anne and du Trésor the only 2 pedestrian streets in upper Town. Just in front of the Château Frontenac which gave you in room 3 a such beautiful view. Thank you for your compliments on our rooms and bathrooms, we tried to take advantage of the 1730 old walls and add modern amenities to give you the feeling of Old Quebec.
We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back.
