“A great location and unlimited espresso based drinks 24/7”
Reviewed 27 May 2009

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for three nights in May.

Upon our arrival my partner and I were greated with a friendly smile and full explanation of the hotel's various offerings. We took advantage of the valet parking for $20 per night. There is no parking lot onsite. We just had to give them a 15 minute notice when we needed our car, but they had it outside in 10 minutes. The keep the cars in an outdoor lot.

The hotel is located in the lower town, near the old port and the Quarter Champlain. It's about a 15min walk to the upper town. There is a 24 hour cafe. Guests get unlimited espresso based drinks, hot chocolate and/or tea during their stay. My partner and I took full advantage of this service during our stay. There is also a no smoking policy in effect at the hotel.

We booked a superior room and requested a view of the river, which they provided. The rooms have a contemporary style to them and very high ceilings. The windows don't open, but that's a minor point.

The continental breakfast, included with our stay at the hotel, consisted of various cheeses, breads, mini pastries (only ok as they are probably store bought), cereals, jams, hard-boiled eggs and various juices. In my opinion, the selection provided was great.

I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

We chose Hotel 71 based on reviews we saw online and we were not disappointed. Having previously stayed at Chateau Frontenac on a few occasions, the change to a small, quiet hotel in the Old Port was most welcome indeed. We booked a Superior Room through the hotel's website where it was described as having a queen bed. I requested a king bed if available and received exactly that when we arrived. The room was a good size and the soaring ceiling made it feel a little larger, and the bathroom was quite generous. I originally booked at $189, but about a week before the trip I checked again and found the same room for the same dates at $169 so I cancelled and rebooked online at the lower rate, all with no trouble at all.

The included breakfast was a very good spread of fruit, cereal, yogurt, cheese, breads, pastries etc. - more than enough to get us going but if you're looking for a hot breakfast (i.e. bacon, eggs, waffles, pancakes etc.) then you will end up having to go out and speng extra.

We had a little trouble with hot water on our first morning in that it took an awfully long time for the shower to heat up, but it did eventually and we were fine. We mentioned this to the Front Desk and the following morning our hot water was plentiful and undelayed.

It's romantic, it's in the old port where is where you want to be.

The staff, very helpful, friendly and willing to speak English if your French in non existant and very willing to help you figure out how to get to places (like the Ice Hotel) or help you find information you need.

Though not an extensive menu, room service food and wine options offer surprisingly good value and are very tasty.

The complimentary breakfast is excellent (except the bread/pastries are not that fantastic), but the fresh fruit, fresh coffee (cappacino, espresso, etc.), tea, orange juice, yoghurt, boiled eggs, and flavourful cheeses more than make up for the plain croissants.

Parking is valet style at $20 a day and you just need to give them 15 minutes notice and they'll have your car out by the front door.

the rooms are sexy-- perfect backdrop for a getaway for two, yet also very tranquil for those who want a relaxing place to stay. When we walked into our room they had classical music playing and it just made everything seem magical.

My girlfriend and I love this hotel, we are living in Montreal and we always choose this one when we are going to Quebec.

The rooms are trendy, comfortable , the bathroom is amazing, only the f&b and amenities are poor comparing to the hotel standing.
I recommend it only for the room

Critics was so good in tripadvisor that I was waiting for something more. The hotel is good. People very friendly in reception. Good location in the lower part of Quebec. Suficient breakfast. Free internet access in the little business center. Rooms are small, and there is something cold in them. It could be that you have not the confort than in the rooms of the big hotels (Sofitel, Hilton, Radisson)

This is an excellent good value design hotel in Quebec City.
The rooms and the hotel interior is stylishly designed.
The high ceiling gives the room a lot of space and light.
We had a lovely view over the river from our room.
It was even a bit hard for us to understand that this could be a standard room because it was so spatious and had such a great view.
The bathroom was with a shower in a modern design.
Room had free wireless internet and there was even a DVD player in the room.
The location was great close to everything still not in the middle of the chaotic touristical center of oldtown Quebec.
It was easy to walk to all the mayor attractions.
Staff of the hotel very friendly and helpful.
We would most likely stay here again if we would visit Quebec again and we do strongly recommend this hotel as a true hidden gem

  • Liked — Great location close to everything.
  • Disliked — The included breakfast buffet a bit dull.

We had a wonderful 5 day staff at Le 71. We had a room with a view of the water and the Hotel Frontenac. They had a welcome card with congratulations on the anniversary we were celebrating. They also had a plate of assorted chocolates that were a nice treat to have waiting for us.

The room was VERY clean and comfortable. DVD player, room controlled thermostat with A/C, an amazing rain shower-head, separate toilet, a safe, ironing board, hair dryer, full length mirror, desk, great bedside lighting (perfect for reading while the other person slept), a big window, and white bedding. They thoughtfully provide 2 sets of pillows (one more flat and one big and fluffy). Our room also had a comfy arm chair. Complimentary bottled water.

PARKING: $20 CAD per day

GYM/MASSAGE: The gym is small, but adequate, bottled water, massage services.

BREAKFAST. The previous reviews were hash on their breakfast, but we thought it was great. Keep in mind it is a "Continental Breakfast", but is it definitely goes beyond your basic "continental"...fresh, flaky assorted croissants, toast, jams, marmalades, chocolate sauce, butter, yogurt, cottage cheese, cereal and granola, milk, a large assortment of yummy cheese, hard boiled eggs, various cut fruit, fruit salad, whole fruit, dried fruit, 1 or 2 types of juice, a full coffee (lattes, cappuccinos) and tea bar. Not sure what else you could ask for on a cold breakfast bar. Plus everything was really fresh and tasty. The only con I can say about it is that it could have varied more from day to day.

COFFEE BAR. 24/7 coffee/tea bar included complimentary. Need I say more! You can have something made for you as you hit the town and keep your hands toasty warm. We loved having this amenity.

FOOD. You may also purchase cold drinks, sandwiches, desserts, soups, and salads throughout the day from the coffee bar (they close in the evening).

BAR: Full service bar with comfy chairs and flat screen TV.

STAFF. WOW, we were amazed at how welcoming they were. We have traveled all over Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, South America etc. This was the best staff we have ever encountered. They made great restaurant recommendations, graciously meet every request promptly and with a smile. One night I wasn't feeling up to a dinner out so we thought we would get take-out. Unfortunately, the restaurant we went to did not offer take-out. When we went to the front desk to ask for suggestions, Maxime called other restaurants until he found one that had what we wanted and offered take-out.

The staff at this hotel will treat you like you are staying at a bed and breakfast.

My only two suggestions to the hotel were to have recycling cans and mini fridges in the rooms. They will keep your items in the hotel fridge, but if you like a midnight slice of brie or a cold drink in your PJs you'll need to use your ice bucket.

  • Liked — Great staff, perfect location.
  • Disliked — No mini fridge.
