“didn't live up to its reviews”

We had a disappointing stay at hotel 71. The location was great, but that's about it. The room had a lot of wasted space. Although the bathroom was modern, it wasn't as functional as others we've stayed in.

The breakfast was so-so and not included as we had been led to believe. We didn't have dinner at the restaurant, but the ambience was not that appealing to us anyway.

No swimming pool either.

Wonderful hotel, like a funky modern loft in NYC, but without all the hipster attitude. Great location near everything in Old Town. Charming, helpful staff. Concierge gladly helped us choose sites/walks and set up dinner reservations. Terrific room with big comfy king bed. A steal at $200, with free breakfast and parking.

My wife and I just got back from here on vacation and absolutely loved it! The concierge, Francine, was so helpful and nice every moment we were there and was able to handle last-minute changes with no sweat. The staff was great and friendly, from the front desk to the valets, from the concierge (of course) to the cleaning staff. The rooms were perfectly decorated in modern decor, the view we had of the St. Lawrence River was spectacular, and the location was ideal as we were in the heart of old Quebec's lower town and 2 blocks from the funicular to go up to upper town. Everything was walking distance. We only wished that we could have stayed longer and could give a fortune in tips, as everyone deserved it.

When we first arrived at this hotel we were greeted with the most wonderful herbal smells as we entered reception. Moments later we received the warmest welcome possible from the staff member manning the front desk. Check-in was completed very quickly and when I semi-jokingly asked if we had been allocated a good room was told if we were not stunned then our host would face the sack. He still has his job as the room was wonderful; beautifully designed in a modern minimalist style but incorporating many of the original features of the building. Best of all was the wet room that included a rain forest shower. The general level of furnishing was of good quality and the bed was marvellously comfortable. The room was spotlessly clean ,as indeed was the entire hotel.

This is a small intimate hotel that does not have many of the trappings of a larger alternative, such as room service, but the quality of the accomodation supported by the excellent staff more than make up for these cosmetic add-ons. Coffee is available 24/7, a varied and fresh continental breakfast is served every day. Moreover the staff do everything possible to make up for any perceived short-comings.

There is a new restaurant at the hotel. We tried it and found the food very good. However the atmsophere is very busy, noisy and crowded in sharp contrast to the serine environment of the hotel itself. We got the impression that restaurant is becoming a favourite haunt with Quebec's upwardly mobile set. If that is what you are looking for the food, wine and service should not disappoint. Cuisine is primarily Italian. We booked a table for an early Friday evening meal and it was clear they were turning people away by 7pm, so booking seems almosy essential.

The location is also very good. It is set in the lower town which is the old French quarter. It is absolutely charming and much quieter that the old walled city up the hill, which gets very busy. If you want to get to the heart of the tourist area then the cliff lift is about 5 minutes stroll from the hotel down cobbled streets and through the Place Royal. It costs about 5 dollars per couple, a worthwhile alternative to about 400 steps. The Ecobus stop is also 5 minutes walk away and that takes you to the main square by the Chateau for 2 dollars per couple. It is quick, clean, safe and easy, and runs every few minutes.

All in all, we consider ourselves seasoned travvelers and would say that this is one of the best small hotels we have stayed at anywhere in the world. If we return to Quebec we would not think about staying anywhere else.

The Location was perfect. Extremely pleasant service from all. Beautiful, modern room.
The continental breakfast for $10 plus tip was a value. Plenty of coffee, cereal, fruit, hard boiled eggs, croissants, juice, meat, and cheese.

This is a lovely, modern boutique hotel. The staff are very helpful. On arrival the conceirge showed us a map pointing out all the attractions and was happy and very enthusiastic in answering our questions regarding restaurants and trendy boutiques (bless him), Also, prior to our departure from the hotel, one of the girls at reception was happy to ring Air Canada to sort out some flights for us.

The room is quite large with high ceilings and a modern, minimalist decor. The bathroom is spacious and stylish. The hotel lobby and room is quiet and calming.

Matto restaurant has just opened at the hotel and is beautifully decorated. It apparently has become extremely popular. We ate there one night and it was packed with a great, cool vibe. As a guest at the hotel, this is also where you have breakfast and it has a different, more relaxed vibe in the morning.

Overall, a great hotel in a quiet street in the old town.
