There is nothing in Old Quebec which you can not like. It was an experience of its own uniqueness. We shall be returning soon.

Really worthwhile to walk through the old city. Many touristy places, but also some nice shops and art galleries, restaurants etc. Hills and stairs might be problematic for some, and I can see it being a bit treacherous in winter maybe, but great for a summer's day.

This is exactly the reason we came to Quebec City. We'd heard that the city was lovely and full of history and everything we heard was just spot on. Old Quebec has tons of history and character with lots of food and shopping choices. If you have time, you should definitely take a walking tour and soak up all the history you can!

Weather permitting, get out there on your first day and get a lay of the land by taking a long walk along the ancient defensive walls of the city. Wear sturdy shoes.

After the disappointment of Montreal (chrome and glass dominating the "Old Town"; bums; focus on shopping) it was a real pleasure to experience Quebec City's old town. The comparison to Europe is perhaps a tad overdone but the reason for it is understandable.

The great attraction is the combination of randomly-shaped narrow streets, landscaped squares, and a myriad of interesting buildings. Add to that the unique setting, the great diversity of attractions from the imposing Château, the history museums, the informative walking tour. the myriad of restaurants, to the craft shops, and you get a most enjoyable and varied combination. Even the unavoidable T-shirt outlets have a pleasantly comical element as opposed to the smutty or jaded versions in other cities.

And then of course you have the interesting Anglo-French tension. It was noticeable but not intrusive, in fact I found it fascinating. A smile gets you past this in a flash and when there is some remaining resistance, a bit of Spanish always helps to show the silliness.

If the old town is not on your bucket list, I would strongly recommend its consideration. And if you watch one of the excellent CBC productions on the history of Canada before you travel, it REALLY comes alive.
