“Great place to stay”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

This was our second stay in Le Champlain Hotel. Very friendly stuff, which went above and beyond every time we asked for or needed something!

We loved the breakfast and the espresso. Yes, the breakfast is not the typical North American one, but for us it was a nice and welcomed change. We love espresso and we enjoyed the coffee in the hotel. Yes, the machine needs to be tended at, but this is true for every automated coffee machine and waiting for 2 min. to have it emptied or to have the coffee and/or milk replenished is perfectly fine.

The hotel is quiet - yes, there was a construction right in front of it and, yes, it was a little bit disturbing in the mornings (weekdays only), but this is not something that the hotel or its staff can do anything about.

We stayed in Le Champlain Hotel last year, we stayed this year and it will be our first choice next time we visit Quebec City!

Room Tip: The view from the floors 2 and up is nice, but 4th and 5th floors are probably the best.

Lots and Lots of Pros -

Our room was nicer and much more spacious than expected. (Superior KIng.)
No noise issues from inside or out.
Self-Parking right behind hotel a huge plus! (Our mid-sized SUV fit, but was tricky to park.)
Extremely helpful, friendly staff. (English no problem.)
Perfect location and an excellent value.
Buffet breakfast much better than expected and available early. (Don't miss the cheese drawer.)

Cons -

We had none, but would have been extremely upset had we been moved for overbooking as another reviewer apparently was. (We reserved months in advance, confirmed 2 weeks before arrival, and double checked on our parking reservation, too. Arrived at 5:30 p.m. and had no problems whatsoever.)

Yes, it's a bit tricky to find, but this is Quebec City and not the fault of the hotel. (We overheard them giving directions on the phone to a lost customer, so help is available if needed.)

Room Tip: We were on the 5th (top) floor with a great view. Remember, in Canada, the first floor is the ground...

We stayed here last week-end. We actually got this property on Hotwire, but were pleased with its location in Old Quebec, better known as le Quartier Latin.
This is a very basic property, which does lack some amenities which would add to travellers' comfort.
We asked for an upgrade, but the hotel was full for the Festival de la Nouvelle France.
Our room facing the street (more about that later) was compact, but clean. The bathroom, again basic did not provide any upgraded shampoo, soap etc. The soap was in a push dispenser and wasn't the best quality.
Ditto for the shampoo and conditioner, which leaked into the tub.
The bed was somewhat hard and the pillows uncomfortable. for those with allergies, the comforter contained feathers.
There was major road construction happening directly in front of our window, which caused some disturbance. This, of course was not the hotel's fault, but came as a complete surprise to us.
The much lauded coffee machine and breakfast served downstairs were not to our taste. The coffee machine seemed to need monitoring and we got some bitter-tasting coffee.
We had breakfast out on the last morning rather than eat here.
The employees at the desk were cheerful and helpful, but we would search for a more comfortable hotel the next time.
We did love Quebec City and Festival de la Nouvelle France was wonderful.

Friendly and most helpful staff!!! We had one issue (needed tub safety devices) which they resolved in a matter of minutes! Ditto to what everyone else has said. The value is exceptional. This will be my preferred place to stay in Quebec.

Showed up at a reasonable hour (5pm) to find that the hotel had been overbooked and despite the fact that I booked and paid for my room over a month in advance, my gf and I had to walk across town in the rain to a different hotel. We booked this hotel specifically due to downtown location and were not impressed to have been moved 15 minutes out of the downtown. Not much you can do in a situation like that, a refund would have been nice, but I guess I'll just share my experience so hopefully others can avoid what happened to us.

Bonjour Mr S,

We are totally sorry of that situation. Sometimes mistakes and computer glitches happen….
Your reservation and prepayment 6 weeks ago was made through a third party booking and that means that we have no way to communicate with you before you arrive at the hotel. That also means that you have paid the third party for the room, when booking but that the hotel will be paid only one month after your stay, just to let you know. Moreover, when you book through a third party, the hotel is not notified immediately and sometimes a second customer squeezes in. Electronic channels can be very rapid.
As I told you at the beginning of my mail, we are sorry and as unhappy as you. When we realized that there was an overbook, we had two choices. Either wait for your arrival and reimburse you at that moment, or we could make sure that you had a place to stay in Quebec city by retaining a room for you in an equivalent hotel (3 stars). Since we knew that that particular weekend would very busy, we chose the second option. In a sense it was lucky for you, because it would have been impossible for you to find a hotel near the Old City, all hotels were sold out.
If I could have reached you prior to your arrival, I would with pleasure have given you the choice of a refund or try to book you another room, but because you used a third party it is not possible since we don’t have any information concerning the customer, only that the room has been booked.
Again we are sorry and hope that you enjoyed your stay in Quebec !

All staff members were pleasant, friendly, and very accommodating. We had reserved a parking space and they agreed to give us a different spot since our assigned spot would have been too tight for our SUV. Our room was gorgeous with all updated fixtures and furniture.

We left an item in the room and when it was found they promptly agreed to ship it back to us.
Overall a great experience.

I would definitely stay there again.

From the moment we arrived at the check-in desk, every need was met, every question was answered and every concern was addressed with a warm and caring response. Our rooms were very clean and attractive. The photographs on the web site represent the hotel perfectly. Every effort was made by the hotel staff to enhance our visit from New York. The concierge made dinner reservations and took care of the double decker tour bus reservation, as well. After being caught in a late night down pour and arriving drenched in the lobby, the front desk clerk secured warm towels and had them brought to our rooms. That is going above and beyond. We enjoyed an authentic and delicious French breakfast each morning. Be sure to reserve a parking space in advance. I look forward to a return stay.
