I should start by singing the praises of Tadoussac and the Saguenay area in Quebec, Canada. But I will do this in another review on L’Anse St.Jean, also in the Saguenay area.
What I would like to write about here is a wonderful, modest, comfortable, affordable little hotel in Tadoussac. It is called Hotel Sous La Croix, and the address is 3, Sous-la Croix, Tadoussac, Quebec, G0T 2A0, www.hotelsouslacroix.com.
This is the second time we are staying there. The first time, quite a few years ago, we discovered it by chance, as we were looking for a place to stay on our way to Labrador. We soon realized that we struck gold. We got a room on the second floor, a rather small room, but with all that was needed, bed, dresser, lights, etc, and a private bathroom with a very good shower. And all very clean.
The best part, or rather parts were:
1. The room had a balcony with an incredible view over one of the most beautiful bays in Canada, the place where the majestic St. Lawrence River mixes with the waters from the Saguenay river, after that had travelled through one of the most beautiful fjords in Canada.
2. Although it was not a B&B, there were small kitchens on each floor for the convenience of the guests, each with a coffee machine, coffee, milk, cups, etc., also a toaster and microwave.
We sat on the balcony and could not believe our good luck to have this superb view, even to see some whales just passing by for our viewing pleasure.
Not long ago we decided to revisit the Saguenay region, but this time, we booked three nights at this same hotel in Tadoussac, specifying that we wanted a room with a view. We were a bit worried that our memories have carried us too far and that we will be disappointed.
We were not. We got our second floor room, still small but very serviceable, and we got the balcony! And the bay, all out there, with Tadoussac’s houses under us ( did I mention that the hotel is up on a hill, hence the gorgeous view?), the marina, and the bay, and the limitless sky with all its colours.
Has anything changed in the hotel since out last time? Yes, people have discovered it, so it was all full, and there was a small fridge just outside our door in the corridor, an unexpected bonus. Other than that, still the same, unassuming little hotel, with parking next to it, picnic tables out on the grass, wooden stairs and balconies. It looked like it had been refurbished, with beautiful wood everywhere, the rooms, the stairs.
We had more time now, so we took long walks around a peninsula that juts into the bay, watched the boats in the marina and the ferry connecting Tadoussac to St. Catherine across the Saguenay, explored local bakeries and cafes and restaurants. There is not too much English spoken here, however this was not a problem for us as we do speak French. But even without the English language, people seem to be able to communicate and make things happen.
We also spent time in the luxurious Hotel Tadoussac, the local grand hotel, where we had a memorable meal, and listened to a French “chansonnier” who made my heart sing.
The whole Saguenay region is quite extraordinary, and worth a longer visit. I will write a review on another gem we found there and the local artisans who are inspired by the natural beauty of their province.
