“The Grand Dame of Saskatoon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

Last week we stayed at the Bessborough. There were two of us, we had 2 queens with a city view on the 4th floor, room 429 to be exact. The room was a perfect proximity for a beautiful city view, it was very large and very well kept. Not quite sure why, but there was not a bellman on duty on arrival at 4 o'clock. Luckily we were travelling light. We were greeting politely and quickly, the front desk clerk sent for someone to valet my vehicle. The Bess is a very beautiful grand old historic hotel on the river banks. It was a rainy evening and the front desk gladly supplied us with an umbrella for our walk around downtown and our stroll along the riverbank paths. Love the location of the Bess and also all the history it holds.

Room Tip: Loved my city view. The sparkling night lights were pretty. Room 429. Close enough to the elevator b...

We visit our friends in Saskatoon a few times a year - and of course - want to stay in a hotel that is modern, updated with a clean and comfy bed.

The choices in Saskatoon are limited, being a small city - so you really are left with two 4 star hotels. The Delta Bessborough and the James Hotel. We always chose the James Hotel - it is brand new and centrally located - averaging $250/night. We never chose the Delta Bessborough because of the older decor - which usually results in uncomfortable beds.

We were told they recently renovated - so with a room sale at $167/night - we chose our recent stay here.

We were not disappointed. The exterior of the hotel is gorgeous - lying across the river in majestic stature. The hotel is steps away from all the happening new restaurants such as Ayden and Cut Steakhouse! You are also a 10 minute walk through the nice part of downtown Saskatoon to the downtown mall!

If you are here to tour Saskatoon - this would be a great hotel for you to stay at. The decor is tastefully done with a bit of the old still present throughout the hotel. The staff are friendly and prompt and always asking if you need help or how they can help you - which is rare!

I am so happy to know that I now have two hotels to choose from for a luxurious stay in Saskatoon!

We enjoyed our visit to this beautiful historic hotel - a highlight of our trip to Saskatchewan. You could expect to pay over twice the price for a similar hotel in Vancouver or Victoria, so this was a real bargain. The front desk staff were friendly & helpful, giving us a corner room with a view of the river, and allowing us to check in early just after noon. From the hotel we enjoyed the footpaths along the Saskatchewan River. I would recommend & come back! There is a lovely pool
& gym facilities which we did not have time to enjoy.

Room Tip: Corner room with view of the river is lovely

The Delta Bess is a former CN/CP hotel and sits prominently by the banks of the South Saskatchewan. Inside are the amenities of all that you'd expect from a hotel of this calibre, from spa to conference facilities. Indeed, there was a wedding the weekend we were there. Our corner room featured two views of the river valley and the bed was extremely comfortable. In light of all of the above, it seems petty to compare the Bess to its Fairmont cousins. Small details make a big difference, and the Delta falls just short here. Overall, a lovely stay for a value price.

The building is beautiful and is a destination in itself. The room we were given was surprisingly large as it has a large jut due to the architecture. Unfortunately, the shower was not draining and after the maintenance staff spent 20 minutes pulling extremely fouling looking material from the drain we were moved to a much smaller room.

There was a festival going on and we enjoyed being able to walk from along the paths from the hotel.

We had breakfast in the hotel the next morning and it was good - typical Delta quality.

The prices for hotels in Saskatoon do not vary like they would in a high traffic city like Bangkok or New York. The Bessborough is maybe double the lowest price places, but in another country, this hotel would be 10 times the cost of the lowest price places. The Bessborough is old, so the rooms are not huge and the windows are small like windows were 100 years ago. We had the room with the view of the river valley and it is an impressive view of the Univesity area across the river and a bridge. We happened to be there during the jazz festival so it was like our room was a box seat for the concert. Central location and there is an impressive hiking trail that butts against the property. Free internet and the tv had HDMI and VGA connections for using as a monitor with the laptop. If you are familiar with all the hotels in Canada that were built when the railroads went in, this is just like all those. There would not be many hotels in Saskatoon that would be better quality.

Room Tip: The rooms with a view are most expensive, but probably not worth it for longer stays.

Beautiful Hotel with lovely views. We had dinner at the Japanese restaurant which was only average, but I think we are very fussy when it comes to Japanese food. The Hotel is in a great position on the river and close to everything.
