“The name is now Canada’s Best Value Inn - River View Hotel”
Reviewed 31 July 2009

Three of us stayed in a large room with two queens in late July, 2009. This hotel offers very basic, clean rooms.

We’ve stayed at this hotel several times over the past 30 years and the recent renovation of the rooms is a very nice improvement. Our favorite thing about this hotel is the view of the Yukon River flowing by in the midnight sun (you need to ask for a room on the river side of the hotel).

Wireless internet connectivity was good in the room, but not great - the signal kept going away. Outlets are easy to reach - however, as always, I advise bringing an extension cord. A desk and chair in the room makes computer work comfortable. The room was reasonably quiet, the beds comfortable, and we enjoyed a good sleep.

The staff was friendly and helpful; parking is ample and easy; coffee is available in the room; no iron or board is in the room. The water pressure and temperature is good. Laundry facilities are downstairs though we did not use them.

You can walk to the Frantic Follies - just across the street. It was unclear to us whether the hotel's restaurant was closed temporarily or permanently. But no matter - there are plenty of eating establishments within easy walking distance.

We never know how we’ll find this hotel each time we visit Whitehorse, but this time we were pleasantly surprised and can certainly give it a good recommendation.

Initial impressions weren't so good - I was booked in here as part of a tour (no choice of accommodation) and on arrival at 9pm found the restaurant was only open for breakfast (like everywhere else in Whitehorse in late September they seem to be gradually closing up for the winter), room a bit quirky (drawers which fall out when opened more than a few inches, a saggy easy chair, a very odd tap for bathroom sink). However bedroom a good size and clean, the staff are very helpful and friendly, breakfast was a bit slow some days but food was good and copious, location was very convenient (and while I was there no problems with noise outside - I was at the back of the building - no river view), within walking distance of everything in centre of town. Initially I'd have given 2 stars but on reflection it gets 3 because it seemed good value and the staff made the place (even when we came in from aurora viewing at 3am there was someone there with a smile). Don't think I'd rush back to Whitehorse, particularly in the off-season but if you need to be there you could do worse than Canada's Best Value RiverView Hotel.

The Riverview Hotel looks a bit old and weathered from the outside but our room was spacious and clean although the bed not the most comfortable. We had a room with view of the Yukon River across the street. There was a laundromat in the hotel, internet access for a one-off $5 log-on payment and the staff were most helpful and accommodating. It has ramp access to rooms, very useful for people who can't manage stairs.

Location was good, it was an easy walk wheeling our suitcases from the train station and an easy walk to downtown and visitor information. There were a couple of seedy looking bars nearby but we didn't encounter any problems. There was a small cafe in the hotel serving breakfast and lunch, we didn't eat there but it was highly recommended from a lady at the visitor centre.

We had done our bookings on the internet and I wanted to thank the person I had been liaising with for their help, turns out my contact was the manager and she didn't hesitate to come out of her office and take time to chat to us before we checked out. The staff receive full marks from us.

The Riverview Inn is conveniently located near the center of Whitehorse. It's not new, but it has been updated and the management seems to be trying to keep it viable.

Despite the name, there's no river in view of the hotel (unless we just happened to be there during a dry spell). Actually, there's not much in the immediate vicinity except for a museum and a couple of bars, but if you walk a block or two, you're in the heart of the business/entertainment district with all its restaurants and shops. The neighborhood north of the hotel looks kind of rough (abandoned buildings with graffiti), but this is a small town and nothing seemed too dangerous. Fortunately, if you don't like the looks of the surroundings or the patrons of the bars next door, the hotel offers underground parking in a locked garage.

Our room (125) had been redone recently, so recently that the wood trim was still unfinished. The carpet, beds, and bathroom fixtures were all very new and worked well. The beds were comfortable and the window shades kept out the midnight sun.

There is no breakfast, but they do have a secure wireless network. Several coffee shops are within walking distance. The laundry room has 3 washers ands 2 dryers, and detergent and fabric softener are available at the front desk. They will also exchange US & Canadian currency at a reasonable rate.

There are probably several better hotels in Whitehorse, but it's a pricey destination and this hotel is a viable option for anyone watching their expenses. With so many things to do and see in Whitehorse, it isn't necessary to spend much time at a hotel at all.

The Riverview is fine, nothing fancy, no frills. Located close to downtown, so you are within an easy walk of many good dining options. Staff was helpful. Rooms are OK. Clean, average size, not too much traffic noise, although quite a few obnoxious drunks coming and going from a couple of nearby bars when you walk from the hotel toward downtown, but no one gave us any trouble. On a side-note, we loved Whitehorse, some really good dining and shopping options, a very friendly town. If I was younger and single, I could probably have lived here for a while. Adventure is so closeby.

We were a little apprehensive when we first arrived because the property definitely needs a thorough paint job on the outside. However, it appears that the owners have invested first in the inside, which is how it should be. The lobby is welcoming and, more importantly, the rooms are large and nicely renovated. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are nice, too. The nice and clean rooms, plenty facilities plus a very convenient location downtown, near the river, make this place good value.

Not much to write here as the hotel was pretty average in all senses of the word. The room was ok, the view was ok, the staff was ok. Nothing exception. The location was fine - right in the heart of town. Nothing about the hotel (or Whitehorse for that matter) struck me as a must. Our one really positive experience was eating dinner at the Klondike restaurant. The staff was incredibly friendly. The food was out of this world - the muskox goulosh (I was being adventurous) must have been one of the best meals i've ever eaten...
