Inn on the Lake may have previously hosted a famous diva, but she would run away quickly now. The host/chef met us with a surly attitude because we were "late", the staff refused to fix us dinner after confirming our dinner reservation earlier in the day (remember the Inn is 35 minutes from town), and my credit card was overcharged significantly for our stay (still trying to sort this out). We stayed in the Fireweed Cottage, that although cleaner than the reviewer found in April, was in disrepair and surrounded by junk. Samples of the disrepair: an outdoor step fell off, the kitchen faucet just doesn't leak, but constantly runs, the bathroom countertop is broken in two. Yes, this is the Yukon and allowances can be made for things like water pipes exposed in the living room, but the hosts should be accommodating and hospitable.

Room Tip: The Fireweed Cottage is in disrepair. Not sure of the rooms in the main building. I do know that t...

Even though we were attending a conference in Whitehorse, it was definitely worth the 35min drive out to Marsh Lake - perfect cell coverage the whole way ! We were thrilled to be in the Fish Room ... wonderful view of the Lake and lovely touches from the fish key chain, to the tapestry wingback chair with fish motif, to the framed lures, and old 'angler' posters. We enjoyed a quiet time in the chairs by the lake and then a delicious dinner with 4 other guests .... fantastic conversation about the need for education about First Nations, Inuit and Metis culture and history for non-aboriginals like happens in New Zealand. The staff were terrific and Carson the owner, truly delightful. I had visited the Inn last year, and vowed to return with Peter to stay. I was not disappointed.

The Yukon is fabulous! Big nature, huge mountains, wide spaces, amazing sky both with and without the aurora, strong spirit ( we loved the Dakhka kaan dancers) and bold tales ( we relished the stories of local writer Ivan Coyote).
We had a great time, but where is the love at Inn on the Lake at Marsh Lake? ( we later found it in Whitehorse!).

It had no atmosphere. They couldn't be bothered lighting a fire in the main lodge to create some. Luckily we were staying next door in our own cabin, fireweed, connected to the inn. Or not so lucky. It could have been great. Lovely fireplace, quirky decor etc. but everything was broken. We arrived to a broken dishwasher literally covered in rotten milk. Clearly unchecked for weeks. The smell permeated everything. We were told it should have had a broken sign on it and therefore not be used. But really. How about fixing it? We were planning on doing some serious cooking. Then it became apparent that everything was broken and in need of love. The shower, the heating, the walls ( holes everywhere, dodgy wiring), the tv......we spent a day without hot water in thirty below. We were told the housekeeper left a week ago, but the place was more broken than dirty. Outside was even worse. Our cabin was surrounded by junk. Underneath the Inn directly opposite our door were piles of junk, as we're two greenhouses? beside us. I can't imagine what it looks like when it's not all covered in snow. And a little OH & S aside, the inns balcony is not supported by the beams below it.

This really was a very disappointing stay, and for me, embarrassing. I had recommended this holiday to our friends and raved about Canadian hospitality. We had all travelled a long way to experience the Yukon. It's a beautiful part of the world, but we stayed at the wrong place.

Room Tip: North facing rooms would see the aurora. Note the inn faces south.

We went here specifically to see the Northern Lights (Aurora) and what an incredible place to be to witness them! The lodge is about a 40 minute drive outside of Whitehorse right on Marsh Lake. We went near the end of winter so the entire lake was frozen over so we could hike across the lake, go snowmobiling, ice fishing and dog sledding at a nearby Ranch. We stayed there 4 nights and 3 of them we could clearly see the Aurora lights. The last evening was especially incredible as the solar activity was extreme. We went out and stood near the middle of the lake and had all these green, yellow and purple lights dancing and flowing in every direction and above us. It was such a surreal experience!

And the hotel was amazing as well! It's not your typical hotel: it almost feels like you're staying over at a friend's place. If you choose to eat at the lodge, then the guests sit together at one large table. The chef brings out an incredible four course meal after which everyone gets to know each other. It's quite informal for such an incredible lodge which we found to be very refreshing. You can come and go as you wish and make tea or coffee for yourself in the same kitchen that the chef prepares the meals in.

There's a solarium with some interesting books, board games, a pool table, a small fitness center, spa, warm clothes for rent and a hot tub outside which can be used any time of the day or night.

Highly recommended! We'd love to return in the summer to see the lake during that time!

Room Tip: The jacuzzi suite has a balcony from where you can sit and view the northern lights. So you don'...

We stayed over new year and had a wonderful visit. The think to remember is you are in the Yukon and it is a long way north. While there is a lot of tourism in the area it is a camping/ hiking/ kayaking kind of tourism. This is not a 5 star location and Inn on the Lake is not 5 star venue. Dont go expecting luxury as you will be disappointed. Go expecting comfortable fishing lodge/ country house. But it is probably one of the best places to stay in the area and absolutely a great place to stay.

Everyone was pleasant. It is out of town and in a lovely setting. It has wonderful views. The Christmas decorations were absolutely wonderful, whoever does them did a great job. The tree was one of the loveliest I have seen decorated. Very simple but stylish.

The accommodation is comfortable but very basic and there is service if you need it or ask for it but it is not a hotel. Its more like a B&B which serves meals. We really liked the relaxed laid back feel of the place (get your own drinks from the fridge etc.) but dont go expecting a boutique hotel with all the mod cons and 5 star service (they dont make the beds during your stay for example).

The food was plain but very well done with the occasional flair. Breakfast is simple (probably too simple especially after 4 days). The wine selection is dreadful but you can request they buy specific wines in town so if you like to drink good wine I recommend you do this.

They are a long way from town and if you want to go anywhere it is expensive ($140 one way into town makes an expensive trip). We went snow mobiling and ice fishing and it was terrific (organised through the Inn)

We were there for new years eve and there were fire works (but think they were put on by neighbors?). It was lovely. Didn't see the lights (but that was not the fault of the accommodation) but felt the trip to the Yukon was worth it as an overall experience anyway. is an amazing and beautiful place.

Only thing I would say is some chairs (even fold up camp chairs which we could carry) we could have sat on to watch for the lights would have been great and a hot toddy or 2 while we were out in the cold at night would have been a nice touch.

My neice and I came to the Inn on the Lake in March 2012 to see the Aurora Borealis and truly experienced the most amazing days of our lives. The Inn is perfect, the owner a delight and the food (thank you Carl) wonderful. We met many wonderful people from all over the world who were able to share the adventure with us. The Aurora was beyond discription and went on for literally hours. With nights spent watching the sky and days spent ice fishing and snow mobiling, it was truly an amazing adventure. I would recommend the Inn on the Lake without hesitation to anyone who has seeing the Northern Lights on their bucket list.

Our stay at the Inn on the Lake was utterly unforgettable. Carson and his team do an amazing job making you feel welcome, and tailoring packages to meet the needs of individuals. We stayed in the fish room, and were very comfortable during our 3 nights at the Lodge. Carl (who is a quite brilliant chef), not only cooked some top class meals, but did so whilst catering for my partners food allergy - huge thanks Carl!

During our stay, we dog sledded (this is an experience which will never be forgotten), snow mobiled and ice fished. The scenery is quite beautiful, and we took every opportunity to get outside (despite the sub zero temperatures) to soak up as much as we possibly could.

Whilst the weather wasn't the kindest to us for aurora watching, this surprisingly became a minor disappointment, as we enjoyed ourselves doing all the other activities and relaxing at the Inn.

Great work Carson - we loved our stay with you and thank you and your team for making it utterly unforgettable!
