Two of my cousins and I all stayed at Danny’s Homestay in June 2010.
We were warmly greeted like long lost friends and shown around the Homestay. The cabins are basic but very clean and comfortable. There is a flush toilet and a shower located in another building next door, and even though there was no hot water we did not find this an issue at all and if anything found it refreshing.
We booked into stay at Danny’s for 3 nights, at the beginning of our trip, and then we were heading to the Naviti for 7 nights and 1 night in Denerau Island. I thought the resorts would be the highlight of our stay and really did not know what to expect from the Homestay. We were concerned that we would be bored after a day or so, how wrong we were. We were never bored whilst at Danny’s and in fact really had trouble adjusting to being in the resorts. There is so much to do at Danny’s to suit all ages. We visited the school, which was such a highlight, the children sang us songs and showed us how they could read English. We had a traditional massage, explored the village, and met all the locals, we watched the local football teams practice and played with village kids. We were lucky enough to go on a bilabial raft ride which was such a great experience and we had so much fun.
While we were staying at the Naviti, the local football team played at their home ground, which is located right near the resort. We went to watch them defeat the opposing side, which was very exciting. After the game, we were invited back to the Village to participate in a local ceremony. We stayed for dinner, which was Lovo, and as with all the food at Danny’s it was divine and far surpassed all the other food we had in Fiji. We never went hungry and were always encouraged to “have more food”.
We can’t wait to go back to Danny’s Homestay as it really feels like a home now, and Tupou, Sake, Henry, Louissa and Cassa are all now our Fijian family. We still have so many things we want to experience like going to the waterfall and hot springs that we will not bother to book into a resort next time we will spend all our time at Danny’s.
Words really cannot describe what a truly amazing and unique experience we had at Danny’s Homestay. I would highly recommend staying with them if you want to experience the “real Fiji”.
