“Beautiful and relaxing place to stay for both you and your four-legged friend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2013 via mobile

Barkwell's is situated in the beautiful rolling hills of western NC, creating a stark contrast to the flat and sandy desolation of Ft. Bragg and greater Fayetteville. Even though this pet resort is just down the road from a busy airport, you hear neither airplane nor automobile traffic. The grounds are spacious, but the cabins all line up together in order to leave plenty of room for the dogs to romp. The area is fenced, and each cabin has its own small fenced yard. There is also a pond that guests and dogs may swim in. Flowers, trees, shrubs, and birdhouses adorn the grounds, adding to the bond with nature started with each unique log cabin.
Many of the cabins share the same amenities; big screen TV's, wrap around porches, ranges, microwaves, grills, washers, and dryers are all included. The cabins themselves are very clean and appear well-maintained. My family stayed in Lacey's, which sported a master and secondary bedroom, two baths, kitchen, and living room/ dining room combo.
The staff at Barkwell's is very pleasant, and they go above and beyond the call to provide info on restaurants and activities. One impressive fact about Barkwell's is the transition towards self-sustainment and ecological responsibility. Barkwell's provides recycling bins, "green" cleaners, and even composting bins in most cabins. I wish the owners luck in this worthwhile endeavor.

We have been wanting to come here. We took our Shiloh Shepherds. We were greeted my Michael, the owner. The 8 acres are totally fenced. Our dogs could go anywhere. including a beautiful pond. Our cabin was great with a large hot tub. The grounds were beautiful. A must visit for dog owners.

We love Barkwell's and are returning in August for another week's stay. The owners and staff are great people and very helpful.

Ignore the bad comments. I doubt it was as bad as mentioned and I know without a doubt the owners would have taken care of the problems without a hassle.

Our first visit was certainly a pleasure. I've read other reviews and no one is stretching the truth. The cabins were clean and very comfortable. Almost want to stay inside all day until we looked at out 4 legged baby. Our pup is almost 1 and this was her birthday present She had so much fun and I didn't even try to keep her out of the water. We all made new friends and ventured out to surrounding areas for local hiking. Don't miss out on this one, glad we didn't.

Room Tip: All of the cabins are nice

This was our first visit to Barkwells and we had a few hiccups, but none due to the staff or facilities. One was that we over packed and brought many items we didn't need or use. We stayed in the Diva and the cabin was roomy, well cleaned, and unbelievably stocked. Air conditioning & fans, washer & dryer, vacuum cleaner, ironing board & iron, big screen TV w/ satellite, wireless internet, stereo, DVD player, games & books, dishes and utensils, dishwasher, grill, you name it, they probably thought of it. We had even brought our own water, but the water from the tap was fresh and clean. We also brought a lot of food with us but there is a very large grocery store a short drive away. The only downside to the Diva is that it has a very small yard and a lot of steps down to it. That was fine for our 2 younger dogs, but our 12-year-old, blind Labrador had a difficult time and we had to take him for a walk each time he needed to go out. So if this is an issue for your dog, look at the cabin descriptions closely as others have larger yards and are better equipped for a dog with physical disabilities. Again, this was not the fault of Barkwells - when we booked it was the only cabin still available for the dates we needed and we knew going in there might be a problem for our dog. The rest of the grounds are large, well maintained, and completely fenced and most dogs ran loose. I kept mine leashed as they have never really had this kind of freedom before and I wanted them to become accustomed to the surroundings on this first visit. I recommend that if you are going here; please know how to control your pooch before you let him off leash. One dog was a bit exuberant and jumped on me and my dogs on two separate occasions scratching me and scaring my blind Lab who had no idea what was happening. The dog's owner showed no interest in controlling his dog and seemed to think this was funny. I reported the incidents to the owners of Barkwells and they responded immediately and to my satisfaction. All other dogs (and humans) we met were well-mannered and got along fine with our dogs. So if you plan on vacationing in the Asheville/Hendersonville area and want to take along your canine companion, this is definitely the place.

Room Tip: If your pet has physical disabilities check to be sure the cabin and yard you're choosing will a...

My husband and I and our 2 dogs just returned from Barkwells. Our dogs loved it and we did too. We stayed at Bo's Hideaway but all of the cabins looked wonderful. Ellen, the owner met us and showed us around the large 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom cabin. There were fresh flowers and the dog dishes were filled with fresh water. We had a large, shady fenced in yard and a deck with hot tub. There is Free Wifi and a large screen tv. You definitely don't have to rough it. The grounds are lovely and the dogs loved the lake. There is a lot to do in the area from The Biltmore Estates to asheville Food Tour to hiking, fishing and the arts. The people who were staying at Barkwells have all been there before. To sum it up, great place to stay in a really nice area.

This was our 3rd visit in the last 7 months. Our 3 dogs, just love this place...and so do their owners!!! I cannot say enough good things about Barkwells. The cabins are SPOTLESS. They are cleaner than hotel rooms that never see a dog. They have everything you will ever need on your trip....full kitchen, wireless internet, board games, hot tub on each cabin porch. For the dogs, there are dog beds, dog bowls, gated yards with each cabin and doggie doors. My dogs LOVED just sitting out on the porch and watching the world go by. There is a huge fenced area with a lake for the dogs to mingle and play. I have a lab that I could not get out of the water, he just kept swimming...pure joy!!

The owners and manager are so wonderful, besides the great location and facilities they make the place what it is. Everyone you speak with is a repeat visitor. We talked to people that drove thousands of miles to get there.

It is a place you can sit, relax and do nothing, play with your dogs, or leave them in your cabin without worry if you want to go out to dinner or explore the Asheville area.

We cannot wait to go back!!!
