“Vacation at Doggie Heaven”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

We completely enjoyed a wonderful vacation with our Springer Spaniel, Splash, in the Baxter cabin at Barkwells Retreat (4/19 - 4-24). As soon as you arrive, you know you're in a very special place. Whether human or canine, Barkwell owners & staff have thought of everything. The location is perfect for access to so many Asheville area attractions. The Biltmore Estate, Pisgah Nat'l Forest, Dupont State Forest, Downtown Asheville and so many more destinations are less than 30 minutes away. Plus, it's a wonderful spot if you just want to stay & enjoy the beautiful surroundings at your cabin. Barkwell's motto of "Come, Sit, Stay" says it all. The other guests were so friendly as were their dogs. Splash's first trip to the big yard was so rewarding. He wasn't sure what to do when we took him off lead. He looked back and seemed to ask "is it ok if I run free?" After we happily told him to go, he took off running and didn't stop until we left. Truly, Barkwells is a doggie heaven that you can enjoy along with your family's fur-babies. Can't think of a better way to kick back and relax! Definitely going back again!

My husband and I frequently vacation with our Greyhound, Dolce. We also do not take vacations *without* our Greyhound. Having said this, we are quite aware of dog-tolerant accommodations versus dog-friendly accommodations. Barkwells falls into a third category--they are dog-loving.

We stayed at Libby for three nights in April. LOVED the cabin. The three of us shared the comfy king bed in the master. Living room furniture was also great--just throw the dog sheet over the couch and Dolce enjoyed napping in the living room. Dog door was huge, even for Dolce who stands nearly 28" tall. Dog friendly shower. Rugs/mats one each side of every bed--this made it possible for Dolce to jump on the beds without slipping on the wood floors. Libby's private fenced yard was small, but no complaints there. Dolce LOVED being able to play with new friends on the eight fenced acres. Also all of Dolce's new friends were well-socialized and friendly. There were chickens and goats (fenced safely out of reach) for Dolce to bark at, when his friends weren't out to play. Did I mention eight fenced acres, well-maintained, with a pond, dock and sand area??

Had a minor issue one time with the oven, and the repair man quickly came out to resolve the issue. Before tinkering with the oven, he fawned over Dolce, which made my day. My husband and I enjoyed soaking in the huge hot tub on the porch. We also enjoyed the Gift Tote we purchased, which contained fresh eggs from the Barkwells chickens.

Dolce plans to return to Barkwells, and hopefully he will let me and my husband tag along again.

Nirvana for people who travel with their dogs! We spent four days in the Lacey cabin. The cabin was very comfortable and incredibly well equipped. Loved the fireplace on chilly spring nights. Loved the porch during the day. The grounds are beautiful and our dog loved swimming in the lake. Mostly we enjoyed the peace and serenity of this beautiful place.

We stayed at the Fisher cabin for a week with our two dogs and couldn't have been happier. The cabin was beautiful. It had everything we (dogs and people) could need.
The best part was not having to worry about the dogs. The cabin had its own fenced in yard and the entire property was also fenced in. One of our dogs took full advantage of the pond and enjoyed a daily swim.
I wish there were other dog resorts as nice as this.

If anyone knows a better place to stay with your dog, please let me know. We tried a 3rd cabin (Snickers) and it was great, but Lacey is our favorite so far based on floor plan and being close to the lake. Our dogs had a blast exploring the property, although not too many other dogs out and about on this visit. There are so many things to do nearby - the Blue Ridge Parkway is 15 minutes away and numerous waterfalls and trails within a half hour.

If you have occasion to visit Asheville, NC and want to take your dogs on the trip, you could not pick a better place to stay. Our dogs think of it as much their vacation as ours. To net out the benefits:
Friendly owners and staff;
cottages clean;
well maintained;
cozy;
fully equipped;
grounds for dogs maintained well;
and lots of room to run and play.

We love Asheville and go more often because we like Barkwell’s so much.

Room Tip: Definitely view Barkwell's updated website for great ideas of things to explore around Asheville...

We visited specifically for the puppy. Our springer loved the 8 acre fenced in property she wanted to go out all the time. Each cabin also has a fenced in side yard so you can let the puppy out by herself. The back deck can be continuously open to the side yard or closed off. The rest of the 8 acres is accessible from a back gate from the side yard. My husband loved the wifi/interent and direct tv. I loved the spa on the porch. There is a pond in the middle of the property that many of the pups went swimming in but I didn't let ours since it was very cold during our stay. They provide dog towels and sheets for swimming etc. The cabin is a fully stocked home all of our needs were anticipated. Washer and dryer, full kitchen, etc.
One big caveat for folks to know about, the land is very hilly with uneven ground. If you have any difficulty walking on uneven ground I don't recommend this location for you. Even the side yard of the Baxter cabin was very hilly. Some of the others have side yards that aren't as hilly but the grounds are very hilly and uneven. I would return here again a long as I can get around ok...
It is close to Ascheville and we went over to Mayberry (Brevard) what a hoot...

Room Tip: If mobility is an issue call them to book a cabin on a flatter area of the land.
