“Great Art Deco Weekend Retreat”
Reviewed 19 February 2013

An added bonus to our first art deco weekend visit was this Havelock House B&B and it's wonderful hosts (Jeff and Diana). The Havelock Suite was of proportions and quality I have rarely ever seen, with excellent storage spaces and lots of wndows with views out to some beautiful trees and gardens. A well built property, private, clean, very roomy (indoors and outdoors). Great facilities, including a full size snooker table and tennis court...made me wish I had time play either!
Or friends were so impressed they wanted to book this same place for next year, already!
It was a great retreat to come back to and unwind after the hustle/bustle of the events of the day...highly recommend!!

Room Tip: If you like space, storage, and romance...the havelock suite is brilliant!

Thank you for your kind feedback about your stay here; it was fantastic weather while you were here - and so much going on for Art Deco weekend.
So pleased you found us - many guests remark that they had first wanted th stay in Napier but really pleased they found us in Havelock North.
Havelock North is a great 'village' with fine and casual dining, great shops & wineries - Black Barn, Te Mata & Craggy Range.
Everywhere is so close here - Napier - 20 minutes+ drive
Thanks again for choosing Havelock House - and hope you come and stay again - and have a bit more time for the tennis & snooker!!!
Great photos too.
Kind Regards
Diana & Jeff

We really enjoyed our stay with Diana and if we come back to the cricket camp next year will def give Havelock House a call.

I'd like to especially thank Diana for her very attentive service to us.. It was very much appreciated. Even when our Son needed to stay a few nights with us, she was extreemly accommodating.

The house is sprawling with the guest accommodation very private. Three aquatinted families stayed in adjacent rooms. Diana was very helpful in letting us all use the washing machine, even putting through extra loads while we were out. Breakfast each morning was fantastic. We had to leave the house each morning before 7.30 but Diana was up and helping us get out the door. The Hawkes Bay was having a Heat wave while we were there so it was extremely hot at night, but Diana tried to make it as pleasant as possible even going to a friends House to borrow a fan for one of the families.

The property is comfortable. The English stye of the property with sprawling grounds is very relaxing. the gardens are beautiful. The decor is a bit dated if one is looking for a Black Barn experience, but then the prices are extremely reasonable and the welcome one receives, makes up for the 80's decor.

Diana had given us precise instructions on how to find them and gave us tips on local eateries.

Room Tip: All rooms are great.

We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay here at Havelock House. Thank you for all your kind comments.
It is still wonderful weather here in the Hawke's Bay - but not quite as hot as when you were staying which was exceptional! At least you had our swimming pool to cool off in.
Hope to see you back here again next year for the Cricket Camp..
Kind Regards
Diana

We brought my Mum visiting from Canada to see New Zealand for the first time. Knowing that she loves B&B accommodation we let her choose Havelock House in the Hawkes Bay region of the North Island. We only had 3 nights but we enjoyed every minute of our stay thanks to Diana & Jeff. Staying here is like staying with a friend, someone who knows exactly what it's like to travel and what people like. Firstly the house is fantastic, a beautiful picturesque English style home with ample room for everyone to move about. The gardens and grounds with a lovely pool were all well cared for. There is also a tennis court or if relaxing is your thing there are plenty of outdoor places to sit and just read a book or enjoy the views. Diana is full of helpful tips on what to see in Hastings, Napier & surrounds. We packed alot of things into 2 full days and being only a few minutes drive to the charming Havelock village we felt this was the perfect place to stay. The highlight for us in terms of food would have to have been Vidals winery. This place has a great atmosphere with an outdoor casual area serving wood fired pizza and a more formal indoor restaurant which serves up wonderful food from the region. If you're into coffee there is an abundace of great cafe's to choose from in the village including Hawthorne Roastery where they roast their own coffee. If you want to just stay around Havelock house, Diana makes a wonderful breakfast with home made jams and spreads to start the day. When we left for a day trip to Cape kidnappers, Diana packed some water & food for us to take which was a nice touch. I can't speak highly enough of our stay at Havelock House, and all three of us agreed this was one of the best B&B's we had ever stayed in.

We are so pleased you really enjoyed your stay here. You certainly had a full and varied visit - starting off with the wine tour - we are always happy to arrange these for our guests.
The tide times worked well for your trip along the beach with Gannet Beach Safaris - it is a wonderful memorable trip - I love going out there myself too.
Thank you for all your kind comments about your stay here at Havelock House - Jeff and I really appreciate it.
Hope to see you back here again - and your mum has a safe trip back to Canada.
Kind Regards
Diana & Jeff

The hosts here are very friendly and helpful. Even before we had arrived, they had great suggestions for places to eat and various sights. The house is very nice, we had an enormous room with a very big bathroom. Breakfasts were a real treat. The garden outside our room was a fantastic little place to relax and unwind with a bottle of red from one of the local wineries. Havelock North, a great little hamlet, is only two minutes away. Our only regret was that our original three night stay had to be reduced to a two night stay because of a diverted flight into NZ.

We too were sorry your stay was shorter than planned. It is very unusual to have those sort of holdups at Wellington airport; Napier has an airport - just 20 minutes away - well worth flyinh direct from Auckland to Napier another time.
So pleased you enjoyed your stay here.
We are in a great location for visiting the Hawke's Bay wineries and for Havelock North village / Napier.
Hope to see you back here another time. Thank you for the feedback about your stay.
All the Best for 2013

We stayed in the huge Havelock suite...very comfortable, clean and luxurious with a view of -and a door to - the beautiful gardens. It also had two walk in wardrobes and an enormous bathroom with a spa bath and separate large, good shower...old style glamour rather than contemporary chic. Diana served us tea and cake on the terrace on arrival and gave us good recommendations for things to do and places to eat, which we took her up on and thoroughly enjoyed. We played tennis but didn't have time, sadly, to use the pool. The house is set in an attractive, prosperous, small residential area outside the town with lovely countyside surrounding it....and good places to run if you want! We liked the town very much with its good cafes - and the Farmers Market was terrific.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review - it's always good to hear from our guests.
As you say Havelock House is in a great location and if you enjoy short walks or jogging - there are plenty of places to go. The 3 km circular walk from the house is very popular.
Havelock North has excellent restaurants - and wineries, Black Barn, Craggy Range, and Vidal
are all close by. A trip up Te Mata Peak shouldn't be missed too.
Hope to see you back in New Zealand for longer next time!
Kind Regards
Diana

A very relaxing location. Jeff and Diana make you feel welcome - serving tea and cake on arrival and having flowers in our room. Breakfast set us up for the day, and Diana's recommendations for visits all proved successful - we brought lots of local artisan products back to Auckland to remind us of our wonderful trip

I have 2 small pieces of feedback that would help enhance the experience:-
- Wifi - seemed intermittent on 1 device when we tried to connect multiple devices - not sure if wifi has a limit to consecutive connections - I know other guests also had tablets so this may be the case.
- Towels are probably nearing the end of their "luxury" life

Thank you for helping make our holiday to Hawkes Bay memorable.

Thank you for your feedback and pleased you enjoyed your stay in Hawke's Bay - there is certainly plenty to see and do . We are in a great location for Black Barn, Te Mata Peak and Birdwood as well as all the wineries - I think you also visited the new Figgery - selling fig products which is newly opened.
We do have good internet access here,it may be the multiple divices being used at the same time which caused you a problem - I know smaller divices don't connect so quickly to the network but laptops for emails work well.
We enjoyed meeting you both and hope to see you again in the Hawke's Bay
Kind Regards
Diana

Stayed for two nights. The room was huge with a lounge area and a fireplace - lovely to go to sleep with the wood crackling. The bathroom which included a spa bath and a shower was very large with a separate toilet. All marble and gold. The shower unit promised a choice of jets but delivered a very low pressure sprinkling.
The TV was small for the room and no Sky.
The service was attentive but the atmosphere was not homely. Felt I needed to creep around the shared areas including the games room with the full sized snooker table / the hosts son seems to use this as a den and wasn't sure if I was meant to be there.
The location is lovely, the hosts are welcoming and the place is large and spotlessly clean - 5 cylinders working well. A bit of a decor update and a bit more warmth injected could see the place rise to the top.

Thank you for taking to time to post a review of your stay - you make some interesting comments - but we feel a little confused by some of them.
The Havelock suite is a large, light and attractive room 7.4m (24'.3") x 6.4m (21') - very large and spacious. The TV is new, flat screen, with a DVD, and has free view. There is also free WiFi for all our guests, however the cost to have Sky in all rooms is prohibitive. We are sorry you did not understand it was unavailable.

Havelock House is our home. Our son Tom does watch TV in the games room - he is a bright young man - of 17 - and like us enjoys meeting and chatting to our guests. You have alerted us to the fact we should communicate more clearly to the guests that they are free to use the common rooms at any time.
Jeff, Tom and I love welcoming guests into our home.
I hope anyone reading this will read our other reviews - we do respect our guests privacy - yet are there to help in any way we can.
