We stayed with Carol and Rod for 3 nights over Christmas as part of our two week North Island tour and had the best time. Carol and Rod are fantastic hosts and although the two bedroom cottage is self-serviced, Carol had the fridge and pantry fully stocked, organic eggs, bacon, butter, milk and bread (white and wholemeal) in the fridge and organic ground coffee and multiple types of tea, raw and refined sugar, olive oil, salt and other seasonings and even pasta sauce in the pantry, so you have all you need for making a simple meal. Carol also came in daily while we were out to tidy up and make the beds so that when we came back it was always pristine (thank you for that!). The cottage is large with two good sized bedrooms, a big shared inter-connecting bathroom, a living/dining and open kitchen and a terrace with the best views of Te'Mata Peak. The property is about a 10 minute drive from town centre and about a fifteen minute drive from the nearest beach. Havelock North is a very pretty town, with vineyards, orchards and many good restaurants. The best restaurant we have been to though was Ten Twenty Four in neighbouring Hastings which just opened the week we were there. It's on Pakowhai Road. Extremely good food at very reasonable prices, a must try! Definitely recommend Raratu Lodge to anyone headed to Hawkes Bay.
