Owner description: Point Bonita today is part of the largest urban national park in the United States, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. A secret jewel of the Bay Area, Point Bonita is still an active lighthouse. The U.S. Coast Guard maintains the lighthouse and the National Park Service provides access to visitors. Point Bonita Lighthouse is reached by a half mile trail that is very steep in parts. Discover Point Bonita's wild landscape, geology and fascinating history. The tunnel halfway to the lighthouse is open only during visiting hours: Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Lighthouse is only open half days, and only certain days of the week. I'm so glad we planned accordingly!

We got there early for the 12:30 opening, which is good, since there was a throng of people waiting to go through the tunnel when it opened. Only 50 or so people are allowed across the suspension bridge to the lighthouse at once, so you can imagine the crowd and the line that expanded pretty quickly once it opened. We were in the first group. Incredible experience!

Things to know before you go:
1) it's cold out there. Bring at least a sweatshirt. You'll wish you had a windbreaker over it. We were there July 5th and my boys were not happy they only had a sweatshirt.
2) Get there early enough to explore the bunkers and the view, and then around 12 make your way down the path to the tunnel.
3) on the path to the tunnel are lots of seals to watch on the rocks, and amazing views.
4) once through the hand-carved tunnel (wow!) are other great views.
5) people who don't like heights will NOT want to go over the suspension bridge. It's very sturdy, but if it's windy and there are lots of people, it swings. Many people chose to stay on tunnel side and enjoy the view from there.
6) spectacular views for those who visit the lighthouse.
7) long walk back to parking, all uphill (we didn't notice the hill going down!) but it was worth it!
8) FREE!

Point Bonita Lighthouse is such an awesome place to visit but, the hours are limited when you can view it and be able to walk up to it. The tunnel to the lighthouse is only open on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays from 1230 to 330pm each of those days. So plan accordingly. The view from this lighthouse is amazing because you are able to get a bird's eye view of the ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the beginning of the Bay. This lighthouse is up on a cliff and you have to go through a tunnel and across a bridge to get to the tunnel but it is worth it. The hike to the lighthouse takes about 15 minutes and it is down hill to the lighthouse. If you are staying in the city, I would recommend taking bus 76x as it will take you right to the trailhead to the lighthouse and you will no have to worry about parking. Bus 76x only runs on the weekend.

We came to Marin on a previous visit but the lighthouse was unfortunately closed. This time around we made sure to plan our visit for the right times and got there just as it was opening. Whether it was because it was Memorial Day weekend or if it was just always busy, the parking lot was crowded and there wasn't much for parking. We ended up parking down past the 4-H parking lot and walked to the short distance to the lighthouse.

The views are spectacular and you get a great view of the bridge. It does get very breezy there even during the summer months so a sweater is recommended. We took our time walking to the lighthouse and when we got past the tunnel we came to a line. Many people didn't know you had to wait to go across so they would walk all the way to the front just to be turned around. Once we got across it was really cool because the bridge is very shaky and you look down to crashing rocks. The lighthouse was really neat to look in and it made for great photo ops.

You can also see many of the harbor seals sun bathing on the beaches below. It really is a great spot and I recommend it to anyone who wants to drive across the bridge and see the city from a different perspective. There is also plenty of hiking trails that you can take and you can see the old batteries which are really neat to check out. A lot of graffiti unfortunately but the structures are still in great shape.

This beautiful lighthouse is accessible through a short 1/2 mile hike from the parking area down to the lighthouse itself. Along the way watch the shore lines for the occasional seal popping up out of the water.

Parking Tip: As you get closer to the lighthouse area there is a parking area that you come upon first with lots of parking. There is actually some closer parking with 10 or so spots - may be worth checking if you are going on a quieter/slower day.

Point Bonita Lighthouse the views over the bay and back to the Golden Gate were spectacular. The park volunteers were informative and friendly. Parking is in short supply at the trail entrance however there is an overflow parking a short distance away. There was no charge for the tour but I gave a donation to help maintain the old light house.
