Casa Villatalla Guest House

Reviewed 14 August 2013

We stayed at Casa Villatalla for 3 nights in August and if we could have stayed longer, we would have done so. Unfortunately, our busy jobs in London beckoned. If you're looking for somwewhere to escape from it all - well and truly, escape from it all - then this is a fabulous choice. The B&B is nestled among trees, herbs and flowers at the top of a hill, with breathtaking views over the surrounding valleys and mountains and only a few kilometres above historic Dolceacqua. Things we loved: hospitality from Marina and Roger, who made us feel ridiculously welcome and provided us with hints and tips on the surrounding restaurants and sites (the 3D Visionarium in Dolceacqua is well worth a visit!). Marina's cooking is delicious, so if you get the chance to eat at the B&B, we'd recommend that you do so. Our room had a balcony that looked out over the entire valley. Don't forget insect repellant, as there's no aircon in the rooms (a blessing for the planet) so if your windows and doors are open at night, the mozzies will feast. During the day, we were perfectly happy lazing by the pool and listening to the sound of the cicadas....and nothing much else. Divine. We hope to go back.

Room Tip: We stayed in Tito (Italian for thyme, one of the many herbs that grows in the garden). I think this...

Casa Villatalla is a gorgeous house in a lovely location up in the Ligurian hills. It's gloriously secluded and peaceful, but easy to access (an hour's drive from Nice airport).

The local medieval villages are spectacular - unspoilt by tourist concessions and packed with friendly and inexpensive local restaurants (no picture menus and some of the greatest Italian food I've ever eaten).

Unlike most guest houses, there's no feeling of being just another customer to process. Roger and Marina make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive, and they're expert at knowing when you're in the mood to chat and when you'd rather be left alone to relax - it's like staying at a friend's house.

This is an absolute gem of a place - perfect for anyone looking for a recharge and retreat.

My wife & I recently sought a holiday which provided us with comfortable, inexpensive accommodation, pleasant surroundings, as well as peace & tranquility so that we could utterly relax & unwind. We also wanted somewhere where we could enjoy wonderful scenery & sample local food & wine. We found just such a place in Casa Villtalla.

From the moment we drove up into the hills above the town of Dolceaqua in western Liguria & entered the gates of Casa Villatalla we knew we had found a haven. We were met by Roger & Marina, our hosts, who welcomed us warmly as if we were friends of old coming to stay in their home. They showed us to our room which was light & airy with a balcony leading from it which looked out onto the breathtaking views of their garden and the mountains beyond. En suite bathroom, tea making facility & a comfortable bed all indicated that we were going to enjoy our stay.

We were blessed with good weather which meant we could have breakfast in the beautiful garden of Villatalla. If you wished to be sociable you could sit with other guests at adjacent tables under a rattan awning & chat about plans for the forthcoming day or experiences of yesterday. If you wished to enjoy a quiet breakfast, there were tables around the garden where you could simply sit & enjoy the excellent continental breakfasts that Roger & Marina provided accompanied, if desired, by a choice of every type of steaming coffee for which you could wish.

Roger & Marina enjoyed & welcomed the opportunity to advise on places to visit as well as restaurants in which to sample the local wines and dishes. They also provided an excellent guide to local restaurants nearby, advising on the speciality in each of them together with a very helpful price guide to each. We used this extensively during our stay. Maps, too, were provided for trips to villages & places of interest in the more remote areas in the surrounding mountains, hills and valleys. A car is essential if you wish to take advantage of seeing the local area or go across the border to France.

There were days when we just wanted to 'chill out' by the swimming pool of Villatalla, reading a book or snoozing on the loungers provided. The pool was set in an idyllic position in the garden overlooking the mountain and the valley below. The flowers were a picture, especially the roses whilst we were there.

Marina provided us with dinner on three or four occasions. Every meal was delicious ranging from local fish, pastas & other local foods. All of these were accompanied by a bottle of the local wine, either red or white.

In the evenings, whether you had dined out or in, you had the opportunity to sit & chat with fellow guests in Marina & Roger's delightful drawing room whilst enjoying a drink or two from 'the bar'. Roger's homemade Limoncello is a must to sample as an after dinner liqueur. The house itself was very comfortable & delightfully furnished. We had free use of the house during our stay which really did make us feel as if we were long lost friends of Roger & Marina who had come to stay with them.

In sum, we certainly found our haven in Casa Villatalla tucked away in the Ligurian hills. It was peaceful, we were made to feel very welcome by our charming, friendly hosts, we were extremely comfortable, & the food was delicious. At the end of our ten day stay we were utterly relaxed & refreshed. The only disappointment was that our stay in Casa Villatalla had come to an end, but I'm sure it won't be long before we're back again.

My husband and I would just like to thank Marina and Roger for a wonderful stay at Villatalla. We had our bags stolen in France and had a number of difficulties trying to sort things out. Finally we headed to Villatalla hoping that we could rely on some help there and what a relief it was to arrive, to receive a warm welcome, to have help sorting out a car repair and to finally relax and unwind. I slept so well; the rooms were very comfortable especially the bed; the views were far reaching and the pool was an added bonus. Then there was the scrummy breakfast which really was a delight (and Roger's cappucino is perfect!).
There was so much to do in the area - wonderful bathing and walking; incredibly perched villages to explore and restaurants that provided so much more than a meal, ..plus the best ravioli I have ever had!
We would definitely return to Villatalla and if you are reading this review and considering going, well, you're in for a treat !!

My husband and I have taken a Yoga of Sound retreat at Casa Villatalla for the last three years. Each group we have taken really appreciated the beauty, tranquility and peaceful surroundings.
Yoga on the deck under a huge canopy in the summer and sessions in spacious upstairs studio in the late evenings.
Fantastic food cooked by Marina and very clean accommodation. The garden is a delight to walk around and relax in with the added bonus of a swimming pool. This is an ideal venue for any Yoga holiday/retreat, accommodating up to 10 students. Roger and Marina take great care to cater for individual needs and dietary requirements.
For couples with a car just wanting a secluded retreat while visiting the delightful hilltop villages of Liguria, this is a perfect resting place.
We are always sad to say farewell at the end of our stay.

My wife and I have been to Casa Villatalla four times in recent years, the latest visit in March. It is both a treat and a retreat going there. The setting is gorgeous, SO peaceful. The perfect escape for us city dwellers...
We always come away recharged and refreshed, which is why we keep going back.
Thank you so much Roger and Marina.
PS. I read someone below talking about it being too remote - it really isn't!!! And that's from a Londoner! It's blissfully peaceful but is only an hour from Nice airport...fantastic.

Nestled in the hills above Dolceacqua, this is a perfect paradise that combines the beauty of the hills with close proximity to the coast.

The villa itself is wonderful - the communal rooms are lovely with interesting artwork and artefacts throughout. The living room has inviting sofas and lots of books covering the local area including fauna and wildlife books to help identify the numerous wild flowers, insects and butterflies. Our room was large and light with a terrace. Breakfast was delicious and a treat every morning. Homemade breads, jams and local fruit tart with plently of fresh juice and pieces of fruit. All enjoyed outside with amazing views and tranquility.

Roger and Marina are fabulous - we received such a warm welcome on arrival and they could not have made us feel more at home. Lovely chats about our plans each day and much appreciated tips.

We thoroughly enjoyed a meal with the other guests at the villa. Marina cooked a delicious meal with good wine - excellent value and highly recommended. We retired to the sitting room for coffees and had a great time chatting with everyone. The laughter filled evening was a credit to the comfortable atmosphere that Roger and Marina work hard to create.

The whole feeling at the villa is extremely personal and by the time we came to leave, we were saying goodbye to friends.
