I am writing this review from the perspective of a wedding guest who attended with spouse and small children. First, this is a lovely setting for a wedding and it is great to have the entire resort just for wedding guests. The lodge was recently renovated/rebuilt following a fire and it is beautifully decorated and an excellent set up for a wedding. There is also a nice fitness area in the basement.
There is an outdoor hot tub, sauna and pool. The pool is unheated but was still open in late Sept. There is a small beach with lounge chairs, dock and volleyball court. There are paddle boats, a row boat and canoes. It is located on a small lake. It didn't look like the best swimming lake (bottom looked kind of mushy and reedy), but being late Sept, I did not venture in.
Breakfast was included in the price and it was a buffet with a good selection of foods. Dinner the first night was also buffet style bbq-type foods (burgers, salads, corn on the cob etc). It also had good variety and was well prepared. However, the food on the night of the wedding was, well, flavourless. That's the best way I can think of to describe it. Soup, salad and main course were all weirdly lacking in flavour. You can get lunch if you place your order ahead of time. We planned to do this, but unfortunately no one told us you have to order by 10 am. I called before we arrived at the resort to ask about lunches and they did not mention the cut off time, nor was it mentioned when we checked in. By the time we figured this out it was too late to go anywhere for lunch so we were out of luck.
Accommodations: Be warned that some of the rooms are quite nice, others are not. One room I saw (one of the Lakeview rooms I think) had a loft and was very nice. The one bedroom cottage the wedding couple stayed in was also very nice, clean and spacious. It is beautifully situated next to a lovely waterfall/creek and has a nice deck overlooking it. The room we stayed in, in contrast, seemed like it must be from a different resort altogether. The living space was quite large, but everything in it was very worn and dated. The cobwebs in the corners did not leave the impression that it was very clean either. The bathroom was very small and cramped. It had no fan and one window didn't open at all (the handle was broken off) and the other only opened about one inch. Water pressure in the shower went in and out (as expected in this type of setting I suppose) but it made an awful noise about 3 min into the shower. There was a gas fireplace and a very small, old TV with no reception whatsoever. A disappointment for my sports-loving husband and small children (fortunately we brought DVDs for them). Our bed was ok (though the pillows were hard) but my children had to sleep on a pull out sofa. Our room had a kitchenette (hot plate, bar fridge, sink and microwave). There was dish soap, but no dish cloths, tea towels or paper towels. The can opener was broken and there was no bottle opener. Small things, I know, but when they start to add up it is a concern.
Normally, this is an adult only resort. If I was going away on a romantic weekend with my spouse and got this room I would have been very disappointed, whereas the other rooms I saw were quite nice.
Now to price. They charge by person not by room. As a family of four, this made it very pricey for us, even with the kids at a discounted rate. It worked out to 2-3x what we would have paid at a decent quality hotel (where we all could have slept on a good quality bed, had a working TV and decent bathroom). And we paid the same per person rate as people who got rooms that were far nicer than ours. I understand this is a difficult thing to manage with a big wedding and trying to accommodate everyone but for the price we paid, I expect a much nicer room. Given that the entire resort was fully rented out on a fall weekend, it doesn't seem like that is too much to ask.
The wedding was beautiful, staff were very good to the wedding couple and we had a wonderful time nonetheless.
