“Horrendous, will never go back.”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

After being a local to this pub for a long time, I asked the day before if we could have a meal the following day. They said yes if we got there early, but we couldn't book a table in the bar. I got there with my family to find that two tables were booked in the bar for locals, (we are locals!!) and there were menus out, so I naturally assumed they were doing food. They said to get there before half five and it was five o clock, so I was on time. They then said they weren't sure if we could order food, and then contradicted themselves by saying they will take our order. We waited until quarter to seven until we finally asked about the food and they said they couldn't serve us. Horrendous service, very impolite and won't be going back there. The staff kept deflecting the issue onto another member of staff and the landlady wouldn't listen. Will never go back, they will have a quiet winter now!!

Our review is based solely upon a visit for an evening meal and, sadly, we found that the Inn fell short in two areas. The meals were not thought to be particularly good, fish somewhat tasteless (slightly undercooked?) and a meat meal over spiced. In short, edible and not bad enough to complain about but not enjoyable. In addition, although the lady behind the bar was very pleasant, our waitress was quite inattentive. The Inn has the attributes of a nice country pub but is let down by the food and service.

Having driven past this pub on several occasions we decided to give it a go and were NOT disappointed. Staff were all very welcoming upon our arrival and we were shown to our table which was lovely. Menu was lovely and varied - something to suit everybody - even had a few "different" dishes which was refreshing to see.
Considering how busy the restaurant was we didn't have to wait long for food to be served - another plus point.
The quality of food was excellent as was the value for money
Will definitely be returning - maybe try Sunday roast next

This was my third visit over the last year and I have always been happy with the food and service. This time around, it seemed like there were new owners or something similar? We only wanted a light lunch but were given the full menu, which didn't have any light bites so we opted for soup. Then we noticed a couple being served with sandwiches so we asked for the same to be told there was only brown bread - lucky we wanted brown then! It would have been helpful to know or see a sandwich or light lunch menu. The soup was tasty and hot and, interestingly, came out with white bread! Would probably go back.

Before I write a review I always have a look at what others have said and in this and other establishments I ask myself the above question because I cannot agree.
I noticed the sign in the car park adjacent to the disabled parking area which invited users to ring a bell if assistance is needed - nice touch.
I confess we only had a sandwich and a drink but I found the bar staff attentive and helpful; the seating comfortable, the stock of real ales plentiful and well presented and the sandwiches of door step proportions on a choice of white and brown bread.

We were staying in a hotel up the road overnight and called in to the Wheelwright for dinner. It had only opened under new management two days before, so we really weren't sure what to expect. We sat in the dining room, which was lovely and cosy on a cold night. The service was great, but the food was nothing short of superb and excellent value for the high quality. I had the veggie lasagne, which was delicious. My husband chose the homemade steak and ale pie. He has eaten a lot of pies over the years, and kept saying this was the best pie he had ever eaten. We then had delicious homemade desserts followed by a glass of wine in the cosy bar.
They should give the food a much higher profile on the blackboard outside; it's almost mentioned as an afterthought when it definitely deserves to be their main selling point. We visit the area frequently and will definitely eat there again.
