I was looking forward to a relaxing stay in what I thought would be semi-luxury hotel. After all I chose the best room a Superior Double at £98. and I was seduced by a very well designed website. However it turned out to be a pub with the 'Superior' rooms directly above it. So noise in the room was like people downstairs in the room with you.
the bed in room 2 is like sleeping on a concrete slab and made my back ache in the morning.

Breakfast was ok but service lacking. When I asked for brown sauce to go with my cooked breakfast, a largish blonde marbella-tanned lady sniffed and said 'it's over there' pointing to a table she was nearest to. The correct answer should have been 'Certainly Sir, here it is'

The another lady customer came into the breakfast room and the large blonde lady yelled 'Are you the lady on her own?'. How embarrassing. Surely she should have said 'Are you the lady from room X?'

When it came to paying I felt fleeced at £196 for 2 nights. I've stayed at quite a few B&Bs and this should retail at no more than £65 per night.

On the upside, most the staff were pleasant and the room was tidy and clean but it really is a rip-off at £98 per night with no seaonal prices - this is flat rate.

Having read both the reports on here I thought well il give it a go. Had no problem parking and no scaffold just a freshly painted building. Staff were friendly and found locals in bar very chatty and nice. Our room was loverly 4 poster kingsize bed. Breakfast was fine cereal juice and full English all looked and tasted great. I would stay there again.

After reading the last reviewer i booked into this hotel for a night to vist the plough arts centre which it is next door to. I checked out the globes own web site and was impressed . Price seemed ok so off i set. on arriving in Torrington My wife had to ask where to park and judging by her face i could tell all was not well !! . Why am I always dubious when it says on badly writen chalk board ENGERLAND MATCH LIVE TODAY. Well we needn't of worried as there was only about 6 people in the tatty bar area and about 12 13 year olds in the pool table area (or games room as the web site calls it ). My wife was shown where to park and we entered the Hotel through the back entrance winding our way through the scaffold which so nicely enhanced the hotel ,Past the smoking shelter . We were shown to our room number 3 up a long flight of stairs past the slighlty broken leather tub chair . On entering the room it seemed at first sight to be ....well ok . Thanking the young lady who showed us to the room we decided to settle in and have a cup of tea . Problem 1 the kettle flex was too short to fit on the bedside table so had to stand on the floor. Problem 2 the window would only shut if you wedged it with cardboard .Problem 3 the shower had no curtain so despite your best efforts the water cascaded on the floors Problem 4 the TV did not recieve any pictures problem 5 the room had several areas of damp on the walls . problem 6 the shaving mirror wasnot fixed above the sink but propped up behind it meaning that if you wanted shave you had to hold the mirror in one hand !! So freshly showered (when the water wasnt running cold as someone else was showering ) we went to our concert . On leaving the concert we were intriged by one of the locals comments when he heard we were staying a t the globe "hope you survive ".. Laughing we entered the pub at around10.30 to collect our key and were met with drunken customers who did not seem to encourage you to stay in the bar areas as there was no lounge ..

And now to the food .. The web site states that the food is locally sourced wherever possible. Can't question this except i didnt know that North Devon produce such awful local food especially at breakast . where we had locally sourced deep fried sausages mainly filled with locally sourced bread !! The worst locally sourced thinest bread toasted ever .

Good points Not many The waitresses were pleasent and a quote from one of them "you should have stayed here before !" Before what i ask myself ??

Bed was clean and comfortable .

We stayed for a long weekend at this old hotel, which has all mod cons, it had a gorgeous four poster bed, very well decorated, tv with freeview channels, en suite bathroom, lovely full english breakfast.
The staff were very friendly, the location was good, we visited a lot of Devon as it was all within driving distances to where we wanted to go. Very good value for money. We will be staying each time we visit Devon. Thanks you made our weekend. Sharon and Mick Clarke, London.
