“Don't miss this gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2013

This is one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in, it is on our top 5 list. This Inn/hotel was renovated and finished last November to a very high standard, modern but tasteful. The Glass House serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon teas and dinner with delicious pastries and the fine dining restaurant is beautiful and cosy. The food here is fabulous. Head Chef Tom Williams-Hawkes, former Gidleigh Park, creates tasting menus not to be missed, everything perfectly cooked and balanced. Our room (the junior suite) was large and comfortable with a fabulous rain head walk-in shower and a separate large bath tub. Guests also have use of a small kitchen with the latest coffee machine, cereals and home-made biscuits, fruit and tea any time of day or night. The breakfast was delicious and was included in the room rate as was dinner. Julien the Manager and Kevin and the wait staff made us feel very welcome and spoiled. We look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: Lovely guest sitting rooms downstairs.

My wife had an enjoyable three day weekend in Topsham. For the Salutation Inn I am combining the hotel accommodation part together with the food in this review.
The meals are excellent - we had two dinners in, one being the weekday 5 course taster - you could also have the 5 course all fish (except dessert!) taster menu or the 9 course taster menu. Ours was superb, well explained by the very helpful and friendly staff. On the Sunday we had their 'Sunday roast' menu, with both of us having the beef - all very tasty, with Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes (both notoriously hard to do in hotels and restaurants) a triumph.
Breakfasts are good, with a wide variety. We didn't have any cooked breakfast but one morning I had the porridge with bananas and maple syrup - porridge is also hard to get right - but this was perfect. Breakfast is fully served, no self service buffet as in most places, so the order of delivery may not match what you expect - I can never understand why toast and croissants get served before any fruits and cereals!
We had never been to the place before its total makeover last year, but the whole design, especially the covered in glass roofed courtyard is very pleasant and welcoming. For hotel guests the provision of a kitchen is an excellent idea - here you find a kettle, toaster, coffee maker, bread, home made jams (and Marmite for those who must), home baked cookies, fruit, and water and milk in the fridge.
There are six bedrooms. We had number 2 - small but acceptable, modern design and well set out. The en-suite shower room is very small, though the walk in shower is fine. The basin is smaller than an A4 sheet of paper, with tooth mugs and taps obscuring any attempt to use it, so that much ends up on the floor! The staff were very accommodating to our requests - sheet and blanket instead of duvet, and a fan after we spent an uncomfortably hot first night (it of course cooled down for the last two nights).
But what really does make the place acceptable is the superb welcome and friendly support given to you by all the staff and chefs you meet, all wanting to make your stay enjoyable.

I have always had affection for Topsham and finding the Salutation for a Saturday overnight stay made the visit a delight.

Our room was perfect, a large bedroom with adjoining lounge, full bathroom and separate wc. Friends also staying here had smaller rooms with showers but the standard of comfort was similar and exceptional. Decoration is contemporary chic in shades of blue / grey with white sanitaryware providing an overall classy ambiance.

We had all travelled from as far away as Newbury, Bath and Trowbridge for the evening.

Our evening meal, a ‘tasting menu’, was very good. Portions were small but beautifully presented and prepared to a very high standard. First impressions were that there might be insufficient food to satisfy but most guests commented at the end of the meal that they were all well fed. Canapés, before and after the meal, extended the dining experience and made an occasion out of the evening.

One guest in our party, an ex pub landlord, who we joking called a bit of a ‘pie and real ale’ man wasn’t that keen on the smaller portions but he is probably more of a ‘carvery’ aficionado than a fine diner. We therefore all chose to ignore his opinion.

We ate in the ‘glasshouse’, a conservatory area at the restaurant, and this made the perfect setting for the evening with coffee taken in the resident’s lounge area adjacent to the restaurant.

Breakfast the following day was again first class and as good as you will get anywhere.

To top everything off the staff were all delightful and helped to make the visit a very unstuffy and relaxed one.

Many of our party were not familiar with Topsham but after the weekend there they were smitten, as enjoyable as the likes of Lymington and Salcombe which we are all familiar with.

We celebrate our friendship with a reunion at least once or twice a year and the call upon leaving was for a revisit soon.

As organiser of our get togethers it was nice to be toasted on the evening for finding yet another excellent restaurant.

Room Tip: I would suggest all rooms are good but No7, if used with the adjoining lounge area, makes for a spec...

I love the conservatory area in this hotel and its location in the heart of Topsham. I was a little disappointed with the bedroom, it was mediocre with very little character. The rooms generally lacked character.
The breakfast was a stunning spread of poached haddock, fruit salad and granola and many other delicious treats. The breakfast was by far the best i have ever had. The presentation was a real delight.

We stayed over Easter and had a great deal on a dinner , bed and breakfast rate , lovely surprise to be given room one which is a stunning room , huge , tastefully decorated and with a fantastic bathroom , shower was one of the best I've ever had in my life ! Dinner was a tasting menu which was in the main very good , though small portions beautifully presented and of a very high quality . The canapes before the meal and service were first class . Breakfast started with a delightful arrangement of home made jams , toast and mini croissants , my full english breakfast was served in a bowl and let down by the bacon being cremated but all in all a delight . The Salutation has only been opened for about six months and is very close to being a very top class establishment indeed , there's still a little work in progress but no doubt this will be a wonderful place to stay in the delightful town of Topsham , if I could I give a rating of four and a half , but will return and highly recommend the Sautation Inn

Others have commented on the fabulous food (did anyone mention the excellent value wine list?). But this is a wonderful place to stay. Breakfasts are so often a disappointment - not here! Smoked haddock and poached egg, mushroom and spinach, "full English" and more. And the Pantry Kitchen for overnight guests is a gem of an idea. Who needs tea and coffee making facilities in your room when you can wander along and find all that and more (cereal, proper bread, butter and home made jam)? Topsham itself is a surprise - lovely walks on the Exe estuary, cycle routes and a convenient train service. The Salutation is a stunning place to stay.
