“Fine Dining”

Having enjoyed excellent light lunch a few days before, we were a little bemused to be confronted by a tasting menu, but this proved to be as good, and would thoroughly recommend.

“A real treat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2014

Dinner 2/12 - It is a real pleasure to find another quality dining experience in Devon. From the Amuse Bouche / Canapés to the 7 Course Taster Menu every mouthful was a delight. We took the 'Wine Flight' and the Sommelier was quite simply superb adding to every course a real passion and flair for the wines selected & why. We think you should highlight the Sommelier and the wines more on the website as a feature of the dining experience. Our only slight criticism is we felt the Lounge decor was a little stark and needed a few finishing touches to add to the styling and make it a little more cosy in keeping with the rest of the hotel. However, we don't want to detract from what was a wonderful evening and in homage to the quirky Boutique Hotel market that you are aiming for the faux animal skin tiles in the ladies were also a delight. All the team were charming and in particular thanks to the General Manager and young lady that served us. We will be back and will certainly recommend.

“Top quality fine dining in an excellent Boutique hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 January 2014 via mobile

I recall having passed through Topsham in my youth and when a friend suggested in the summer that we take our wives to this little Boutique hotel that he had discovered for a two night New Year break, I agreed without a second thought. We arrived to parking a little on the tight side, but a huge welcome from the staff. Formerly a run down pub transformed into this little gem by Ed ( fantastic local character ) and his son the gifted chef. The bedroom was excellent and expensively appointed. The restaurant was roomy but ambient. We had a choice of taster menus and all chose the 5 course, but were able to mix and match courses from other menus once we had chosen our main. The food was excellent in all departments and the staff were obviously well skilled in their art . Breakfast in an atrium area was available until 11 am and we were unhurried at all times. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and we all look forward to our next visit.

“In line for a Michelin star?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2013

We celebrated a special occasion at the Salutation and had a wonderful experience. First class service and food which can only be described as exquisite. They were more than willing to make changes to the set menu to accommodate dietary needs and specific dislikes. Menus started at less than £40 which for the quality of the food was excellent value. And we had a well-priced Malbec chosen from bottles starting from £17. Having eaten at several Michelin starred restaurants, the Salutation must surely be in line for similar recognition some time soon. Highly recommended.

“Fine dining with flair”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2013 via mobile

The restaurant is part of a larger premises, offering fine dining in trendy Topsham, near Exeter. The rather limited menu is offered in the slightly intimidating lounge area, where the seating arrangements tend to impinge on the privacy of fellow diners. The various tasting menu options give set price meals which can be swapped around. The impression of a long meal with little and often is realised in the formal dining room, where service is excellent and the seven courses well paced. Given a second chance, we would have chosen differently, as our meal was heavily balanced towards the sweets - our fault and not theirs. The crusty fish cakes were a bit too crusty, and the cheese board geared towards goats, but overall a fine dine indeed. Not cheap, at £160 for the two of us, but a good night out.
