“Stay at Route2 Topsham”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

We checked out the weather forecast and then booked a couple of nights in one of Route2's apartments above the Cafe / Bar. The apartment, Estuary, overlooked the Topsham Quay and the River Exe - Route2 is at the back of the Quay so it's a mid-distance view of the river and quayside activity.

The apartment was quite spacious and recently refurbished, with lounge/diner/kitchen room facing the quay. Two sofas, one of which was a sofa bed for an extra 2 guests. Large screen TV. Large round diniing table and well-equipped run of fitted kitchen units, including induction hob, oven, fridge, dishwasher.

Large double bedroom with window, plus modern ensuite shower room - with a great shower - completes the accommodation.

Lovely smells wafting up from the Cafe / Bar below at Breakfast time were matched by the great breakfasts that they serve. And really lovely coffee - I had to have a second black Americano each morning.

Very friendly and helpful staff at Route2 - and keen cyclists too. How many cafes do you know that sell spare inner tubes??

Topsham's a great place to use as a base if you're cycling. We arrived at Exeter St David's station with our Brompton bikes, straight on to the Cycle Trail down to 'The Quays' with a choice of eateries - try 'Mango' for a light snack and good coffee. A gentle cycle down river to Topsham with lots of activities, bird-watching and wildlife to see.

You'll find your own favourite places but Turf Locks pub we found was superb on the west bank of the Exe. Exmouth has a number of places - The Waterfront really *is* on the waterfront, with tables above the sea wall.

When the short section of Trail between Turf Locks and Starcross is completed soon, the Exe Estuary will have a great cycling circuit (at the moment, it's a short stretch of footpath but used by cyclists with mountain bikes).

We're looking forward to going back again in the Autumn sometime.

“OK but Nothing Exceptional”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

Hired 2 bikes from here to save taking our own down to Topsham. Bikes were mechanically OK but for a day rate of £16 (excluding helmet hire) I'd have expected a) some mudguards and b) somewhere to attach a pannier.
The mudguard thing may mark me out as an old fogey but even on a dry day our trip down to Exmouth, across on the ferry to Starcross, down to Dawlish and then back via Turf Hotel and Double Lock gave plenty of opportunity to get mud-splattered.
That aside bikes were light and gears and brakes worked well. I guess they must also have looked quite professional too as we got clapped back into Topsham by people assuming we'd taken part in 'The Nello' charity bike ride ( a 100m or 100k challenge so rather out of our league!).

“Lost a little sparkle...”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

We have been to Route 2 on numerous occasions over the past few years, but feel that it has perhaps just lost its sparkle a bit on the last two times. Both times were lunchtime, and the service was exceptionally slow (even though the cafe was not busy), and the food was average when it arrived (certainly not to the standards experienced before).

I don't think we will be heading back in the near future.
