The Elizabethan Restaurant provides the perfect place for dining throughout the day from hearty breakfasts to elegant candle-lit dinners. The Bar area is traditionally decorated with rich textures and colours, you can sit back, relax and enjoy freshly prepared dishes, speciality coffees, fine wine and award winning St Austell Brewery Ales. We serve food throughout the day until 10pm, but please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

We ate at the Globe twice on our short stay in Topsham - which tells you that we thoroughly enjoyed the first time! The food was excellent - a good range, well cooked and nicely presented. The first time, the service was excellent - the waitress was attentive, knew her wines as well as her food, and was friendly and helpful. The second time I can only assume there was an issue with staff sickness or something - we waited over 40 minutes for our main course. They were busy but we got no explanation and no apology while waiting - just a quick 'sorry about the wait' as the food was finally brought, before the over-stretched waiter/barman dashed off to the next person! A quick apology while we were waiting, and an explanation - would have gone a long way, but they were obviously so under-staffed perhaps there just wasn't time. Again, the food was delicious so the wait was worth it in the end!

The Globe reopened after refurbishment in the early summer and since then we have eaten there 4 or 5 times.

Whilst food presentation over this time has increasingly turned to the latest fad of serving on a wooden board (looks nice, but actually pretty impractical and difficult to eat from) quality has declined. My wife had the mussels on our last visit and the sauce it was in was so salty as to be inedible. My chips were also heavily salted - I don't understand the need to salt chips in the kitchen as it is surely easier and better to allow people to salt to taste. Children's meals have also declined: the pasta used to come with meatballs and now doesn't.

Service has also declined. My daughter wanted to eat here for her 8th birthday and I booked a table for 4. When we arrived we had clearly been planned to sit somewhere else, but seeing the children we were dumped on the worst table in the restaurant - the isolated one by the kitchens and where the waiters hang around. At this time the restaurant was completely empty. Although we were sitting right by the waiters, they were far keener to chat between themselves than offer menus or take orders.

Overall therefore, great potential but having managed to build up a customer base they now seem to have got complacent.
