When you arrive there's party balloons at the car park entrance as this year the hostel celebrates it's 50th year.

The hostel is in a great location, which, whilst being in a tiny village (in the middle of rolling fields) is still handy for the beach, Aldeburgh, and RSPB Minsmere. The interesting village church is a short walk away.

There's a central living area, with doors onto lobby (with framed OS maps), and to the well equipped kitchen, a lounge (with TV and comfy chairs). Sleeping accomodation is the usual study bunk bed rooms. Complete with friendly helpful staff!

The building was the Old school house, built in the 1900's and lasted only a short time before war and mechanisation saw off most of the people on the land.

Hope the hostel sees many more half century's :-)

Room Tip: All the rooms are good! And on the ground floor.

We stayed here for two nights, Friday and Saturday recently and had the three person room with double and bunk. (Bed really comfy).

All the facilities are there, the room, bathroom and communal areas were clean and well equipped. The hostel is warm and each room has thermostat adjustable radiators. The staff were ever present, friendly and helpful. The kitchen is well equipped and big enough for the guests, we self catered and didn't want for anything.

The hostel is ideally located for many local attractions in the area, (RSPB Minsmere is a must) with Aldeburgh being only 15 minute drive away with it's cinema, restaurants and shops.

We'd highly recommend this place and will definitely be visiting again. It was my partners first stay in a YHA hostel and it won her round!!

A family of 3 - we needed somewhere convenient for Latitude plus Aldeburgh and Woodbridge. It's a lovely location and very friendly staff. My kids thought the breakfast was brilliant. My only niggle would be that there needs to be some serious hoovering and dusting done (especially on bunk beds ) the loos and showers were very clean. Earplugs are needed to avoid being woken up by upset children or early risers. I think YHA are excellent for families and will definitely visit another one.

A smaller Youth Hostel, recently refurbished. Internally it's all in reasonable condition, outside there's plenty of parking plus some lawn space with tables to sit out. Spacious inside with a well equipped kitchen.

Conveniently situated for the attractions in the area.

What baffled all of us was the big TV on the wall in the dining room, which seemed to be always on showing BBC News with the sound down and the subtitles on. It was distracting, nobody seemed to watch it but the hotel staff complained if something interesting appeared and the volume was turned up - perhaps it distracted them from the loud music blaring out of the kitchen.

The other main niggle was that there are only 3 toilets (plus a disabled bathroom) in the whole place so you need a strong bladder during morning "rush hour" when everyone was getting up. Who designed the refurbished layout botched this aspect.

The other thing needing attention and some thought were windows, either they were locked closed (kitchen) or the handles had come off so they couldn't be opened. Not ideal on a warm summer weekend.

These things, apart from the WC shortage, could be easily solved - hopefully they will be,

Many thanks for reviewing YHA Blaxhall. I'm glad to hear that we were convieniently situated for everything that you wanted to do in the area and that you were happy with the condition of the hostel and the well equipped kitchen.

I have taken on board your comments regarding the TV and music in the dining room. The dining room is our main communal and social space and so we have the TV on the BBC news channel to provide updates on local and national news and weather for our guests. This then frees up the tv in the lounge for people to watch other programmes during their visit. We have adjusted the volume and position of the music we have on in the background in this social space for the comfort of all our guests. We hope that it creates a nicer ambience and atmosphere.

For the safety and security of all our guests all the windows have restricted opening but all rooms have at least one opening window. I have also noted your comments on numebrs of toilets. As well as the 4 toilets available for use by all our guests we also do offer an ensuite family room which you may like to consider next time.
Once again thank you for supporting YHA Blaxhall and we hope you visit again soon.

I stayed at the YHA with friends whilst walking the coastal path. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the communal facilities were well equipped and clean. We had a six bed dorm for the three of us, but despite that,we found the room a bit claustrophobic, and the shower facilities a bit basic. The hostel would benefit from one or two triple/family rooms so they could cater for smaller groups easier. The walls separating the rooms are also on the thin side, so you can easily hear the occupants of the adjoining room.

Thank you for reviewing us at YHA Blaxhall. I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that you found the staff friendly and helpful and really pleased that everything was clean and tidy.

I have noted your comments regarding our 6 bed rooms, did you know we also have a couple of 4 bedded family rooms which are a little more spacious, as well as a triple family room with a double bed. Our triple is also located away from other rooms so is a little quieter if you'd like to consider that room next time you stay.

Once again thank you very much for supporting yH Blaxhall, we hope you come back again soon.

Blaxhall is a small youth hostel in a small very rural Suffolk village not far from the coast and very near to Snape Maltings concert hall. It used to be a village school.

We were a party of 5 and we enjoyed staying here. We were impressed by the general level of comfort of the hostel - it has a large dining room, a rather small but fairly well equipped members kitchen, a recently renovated smart lounge with good TV and dvd/video and some games and books, and a quiet sitting area.

Our room, as with all hostel bedrooms, was functional, with 3 bunk beds, but the shower was a good one and everything was clean. The heating was effective. I believe the hostel recently had a complete makeover.

On arrival you get a pack with a duvet cover, sheet and pillowcases and make up your own bed.

The warden Steve and the assistants were all VERY friendly and helpful and this gave the hostel a good atmosphere.

The hostel meals were fine and we had a few of them, although the menu was a bit limited. However there is a very nice pub, the Ship, just round the corner. Security is fine, you have a door code to get in the building and there is someone on reception or available all the time the hostel is open.

There is a small and rather untended garden outside the hostel, and they can also offer use of a washing machine. There's a drying room for wet clothes and a secured cycle shed.

The advantages for a family holiday here are - we could give the kids the run of the place, make them the kind of food they like in the kitchen and they got the chance to meet other children. We got to meet other nice families who were staying there and we did not have the chores there would be if we had just rented a cottage, i.e. we could have hostel meals if did not feel like cooking, and did not have to do any cleaning. It is also on the cheapest end of the spectrum. Unlike a cottage you can stay for just one day if you wish. There were framed OS maps on the wall, and leaflets of local attractions and particularly wildlife and nature stuff.

Disadvantages, all sleeping in the same room with bunk beds a bit claustrophobic . Also obviously there can be lots of kids running around. The surfaces in the hostel (wood floors etc) meant that it was echoey and louder than it had to be. The hostel shuts between 10 am and 5 pm each day. The nearest shop is a couple of miles away at Tunstall and it closes at 6 pm. (however the warden will sell you various basic foodstuffs from the hostel stores if you run out).

We were very impressed with Blaxhall youth hostel.
