“Lovely place - easily overseen”
Reviewed 7 February 2014

Kawhia is probably off most tourist routes, if at all they go to Raglan. Hey, Raglan may have more facilities, but Kawhia has as good scenery and is not nearly as crowded. Wonderful place to stay. Accommodation options are limited too and while Kawhia Beachside may look like nothing special when passing by, the unit was really well equipped with many little details you wouldn't expect. We only stayed one night but really enjoyed it. Definitely recommended to other travelers..

Room Tip: We had a large studio.

Thank you for your kind review.
We do try to accommodate our guests and offer that little bit extra.
We are easily missed as our best asset is not always seen from the road.
The older backpacker cabins are the first buildings you see.

We had a studio motel right at the waters edge. Reasonably well equiped although the microwave was the only means of cooking. A lovely setting which got all the morning sun. The other motel in this town was fully booked and as all the other motel units in the complex were empty I would take it travellers agree the price charged is just too high for what is offered.
The complex as a whole is very rundown and visually not very inviting.

Thank you for your review.
Unfortunately the older backpacker- cabin areas are from the 1950-60's era and despite a huge capital investment still have the appearance of being old.
The waterfront units, however are recent and have prime views. They are not sold as cooking units, and you may well have been better served in one such unit that did offer cooking. I am sure you would have been explained the differences in making your choice, and also told that you could use the camp kitchen to cook in as well.
The motel in town may well have been full, but given that it has only 3 reviews and we have 72 reviews, that does not necessarily mean it is better value for what it offers. Sometimes it is full for family or whanau functions.
It seems that you were less than impressed.
At least if you come again to Kawhia, you know that you can book ahead and try the downtown motel out for yourself.

Not cheap but we felt it was worth it. The campground itself has a nice setting by the water. The units are spacious, comfortable, and well equipped. It is only 10 minutes walk along the waterfront to the Kawhia village.

Thank you for your review-
We are pleased you enjoyed your stay.

No, we do not suggest we are the cheapest.
But cheapest is not always the best.

My mother always says:
"Man who buy cheap weep many times.
Man who buy expensive, weep only once!"

But nevertheless, for what our motels offer, and the beauty and isolation, we consider guests get extremely good value for the price they pay.
Note we have a lot of added extras, and separate sky decoders in all motel units.
As many others beforehand have done,
you have considered what you were getting when evaluating the price.

Kind regards,
Bronwyn Andersen

we stayed in the motel unit featured in the photograph, right on the beach front. we paid $216 for the night for my husband, myself and our two children. the motel room is well equipped with everything you need and more. I wouldn't of been happy with how close the camping sites available were to the motel unit - one was so close that you would have been able to see in the main bedroom.

Room Tip: ensure you enquire if the camping sites in front of the two bedroom motel unit are booked or not whe...

Thank you for your review.
$216 is not overly expensive for a family of four in our BEST 2 Bedroom unit / with prime facilities and views--over the peak of January.

The sites directly in front of the 2 bedroom are parking sites only and are not used for camping other than people staying in the 2 bedroom.
G1 and G2 are car parks and are kept as such or for the use of people staying in the 2 bedroom.
We agree that privacy is paramount and for that reason we do not put tents there.
it has happened on the rare occasion as a mistake but is not in keeping with our normal practise.

Bronwyn Andersen

I had the great pleasure of spending three days and nights at Kawhia Beachside S-Cape between Christmas and New year 2013/14 and highly recommend the place. Bronwyn and her team sure put on a good show - everything works - facilities are clean - campers are thoughtful and considerate and the setting is marvelous. Kawhia is an interesting place and the day trips south and north are worth the effort - there are some beautiful parts of both harbours to explore and the west coast black sand beaches are spectacular. The camp ground was a great base from which to do the day trips and I am looking forward to getting back for more of the same. Thanks again Bronwyn.

Room Tip: I was in a small tent down by the waters edge - Spot F - easing walk to toilets, showers and kitchen...

The Kawhia Beachside S-Cape holiday park is a great well-run holiday destination and we camped there for 5 nights between Christmas and New Year 2013. The campground is on the edge of a tidal estuary so the scenery changes by the hour and is absolutely stunning.

Although it’s clearly a well established campground the bathroom facilities are brand new. Some of the buildings such as the kitchen and lounge areas are pretty old but well maintained. The kitchen has plenty of pots, pans, plates and utensils if you need them and one of the best line-ups of fridges we’ve seen. Everything was scrupulously clean. There was plenty of hot water in the showers but the only problem is that there wasn’t a consistent cold water supply which led to a bit of a shower-dance every time someone else used a tap.

There are a variety of camping sites so if you get the chance I’d book one of the ones alongside the waterfront.

There’s not a huge amount to do in Kawhia but there’s plenty of walks and the hot water beach near the township is pretty amazing. There’s a couple of shops that sell basic food supplies but if you need more then you'd better bring it with you.

A really nice place to visit.

Thank you for the review.
I am pleased you enjoyed your stay- Our team tries hard to keep everything clean and maintained.
Old buildings can be difficult, but to completely replace them is just not economically viable in such a seasonal business.

The photos are amazing - particularly the one out at the beach.

Thanks for mentioning about the cold water- I didn't know there was an issue so I'll mention it to the plumber.
Our showers are run on gas, so it might have something to do with that.

Kind regards,
Bronwyn Anderson

Snow runs one of the best Caravan and Cottage parks that we've stayed in over the years. He pointed out the quality of the beds, and that makes a lot of difference getting a good sleep after a long journey (down the goat track from Raglan, bumpy but beautiful). Because of his efforts we managed to have dinner with the owners Barb and Trish of the Blue Chook Inn (it was closed that night). He and the local GP. The rooms were clean, tidy and with every comfort of home. And he has a great location in one of the pretty out of the way places in NZ
