Avoided this place like the plague when it was the Herron's Nest as it was awful but thought we would give it a try now it has been re done.. Wish we hadn't bothered! A Saturday lunchtime my partner and I dropped in for lunch. Not busy as we got there for 12. Ordered our food at 12.05. Our starter of bread and oils came promptly and was fine.. No one had come to collect the plate once we had finished and so 30 minutes after we had finished we thought we had better ask someone. Waitress was waking around the place texting on her phone!! Finally got someone's attention who said they would check where our mains were. She came back and asked us who we had ordered it through (we ordered at the bar when we arrived) and then advised that the order hasn't even gone through!! No one had come to check on us and no one had come to take our starter away. We spoke to the manager about this who looked like he couldn't care less and just said "sorry guys don't know what's happened" and stared at us blankly. This place has such potential but is a complete and utter mess and certain members of staff who should not be in this industry..

Restaurant fully booked but offered table in bar area when one available. ok with estimated 40 min wait to order. Starters order but then waited 30mins for it to arrive. Quality good though. Same with main course though if we wanted anything other than exactly what was on the menu i.e. garden salad instead of "house" salad which they had run out of, this was not possible to configure on the waitress's hand held machine. next course eventually ordered but after a 40 min wait I went to the bar and enquired (pub nearly empty now) and they went and brought the food out. One pudding - sticky toffee- was not good as the sauce had crystalized by now and sponge was dry. other three puds ok. Overall, surroundings great- food mainly good - service poor although Jess was a nice waitress.

Visited here on 9/3/14. We were told on arrival that the menu was limited, and they had ran out of the majority of the Sunday roast menu. Luckily, me and my partner wanted something different. I had chicken and ham pie and my partner had haddock and chips, both of which were absolutely lovely! Took around 40 minutes to arrive but we were happy to enjoy a drink and take in the atmosphere! Again the dessert menu was missing a few dishes due to demand, but we shared a giant eclair which was divine. Prices are very reasonable. Would definitely recommend.

Food was amazing although the wait was ridiculous. It was a Sunday and busy and they must have had a rush on the beef as we were told it was a 30 minute wait. It ended up an hour.

Owned by M&B their food knocks hell out of Marstons chain of pubs I.e Whittington Arms. The meal we had was battered fish and chips, what a difference to the regurgitated fish we had the previous week at the Whittington.Superbly cooked,a great piece of paddock and their chips were also a lot better. The only fly in the ointment is the fact they will be closing at the end of March for a return I just hope that the new menu won't be an arty farty menu and spoil their food.
The Heron is right by a canal with a lot of outside space, the wood fire crackling in the background leant an olde worlde feel to the pub,no doubt the new refurb will take out all the nice cosey features and we will be left with a sterile pub.
But for now the pub gets a huge thumbs up from us.
