Novojerusalemskiy monastery in Russian. Located near Istra railroad/bus station, 10 minute walk distance. 40km northwest from Moscow. On Volokolomskoe expressway.
Renovation was going on more than 10 years, and now, from a couple years ago, whole renew project is going on. Everywhere looks like construction site. On 2016, will be completed according to their schedule.
Main temple is closed from time to time. Sometimes you can see underground, sometimes 2nd floor. Very beautiful temple building. Saints cemetries. Almost Russian churches, cathedrals, monasteries - no entrance fee. This monastery has high thick walls like a fortress. You can see canons in front of the gate.
It's famous place. So many people comes after wedding. Many tourists and many Russian religious peoples. Parking lots are big, but full every weekends and holidays.
This region is one of the most beautiful place near Moscow. Beautiful dacha area.
It's the place also, president or vice-president visits on new years eve often.

“Nice place but not finished”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

The place itself is gorgeous, very beautiful from outside and the surrounding park, but the church inside is under reconstruction so you won't see much. if you are in no hurry you can go there for 1-2 hours just to walk around the area.

“Not under observation but under a cap”
Reviewed 30 March 2013

We have visited New Jerusalem Monastery - the famous memorial center of Russian architecture of 16th centure in the frosty and windy morning of March. Sun was shining
and any cloud was in the sky - the ideal weather for photographing.
But unfortunately our hopes to see the Monastery and enrich our memory by precious impressions and get beatiful photos failed. Now the ancient monastery is under the grandious restoration. Almost all cathedrals and churches are covered by scaffolds and closed. There are many cranes and other construction machines on the territory. We were informed that a huge number (about 1200) of workers are employed at the site. We could visit only the finished internal room - so called Calvary - with skilfully made tiles and patriarch Nicon's chamber . The guide demonsrated us the drawings of the Monastery while initial construction (comparing it with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem) and the model of the Monastery after restoration. She invited us to come in 2016 when the resoration is over. Now the Monastery looks for turists like a Potemkin village.

“Place of peace and history”
Reviewed 23 December 2012

I love this monastery. It is one of the must visit place when you are in Moscow for two or more days. The best time is late spring and summer. You get the feeling of the monastery life, second world war battles and special peace place. I have visited this place for four times and still want to go there. The Cathedral there is the exact replica of the church in Jerusalem with the tomb of the Lord.
