“Magic in Mercues”
Reviewed 31 May 2014 via mobile

Imagine living in a 13th Century castle overlooking the Lot valley. Well you can at Chateau de Mercues. This amazing four star establishment is a fantasy come true! The views across the Cahors countryside is breathtaking, the staff are well trained and professional and the decor beautifully fits a Chateau that was built in the1300's. The food was awesome, foie gras extraordinary, asparagus as only the french can prepare and the entrecote tender and tasty. Altogether an amazing experience!

The review for this hotel has to be short, because the hotel is so good! Chateau de Mercues is a great hotel in a magnificent setting with breath taking views. Wine is excellent (we ended up taking a few bottles back to Switzerland with us) and the staff was very pleasant, welcoming and forthcoming in a very discreet and friendly way. Our stay was a true 5 star experience.

Really nice place to say the least and somewhere I have been wanting to go for a while. We met some friends there, warm welcome and very good wine for the apero. Slight disappointment with the food in that there were too may courses with creamy sauces but otherwise good and very Professional.

If you just do it once it is worth it for the site itself. We were there only to eat for the evening.

Wow. A real chateau. I was really looking forward to it. The location, outside of Cahors on a hill overlooking the Lot River, was spectacular. The chateau oozed historic authenticity, and I kept reminding myself that I should expect tics and eccentricities that come with a hotel being hundreds of years old. However, the place was a bit beat up, paint worn off the doors, stained worn carpets in the guest room hallways (although the other common spaces were kept up nicely). We arrived to find a hand written note (and a gift of a cork puller) in the room. We had a large corner room that smelled quite musty although it was clean. The bathroom was huge, but there was only a tub with a hand shower, which created challenges. The beds were very comfortable. The room was quiet. We ate three breakfasts and two dinners in the chateau restaurant. The breakfast buffet was excellent, with many good choices. Dinners were also quite good and service was good. We did a wine tasting one night in the chateau wine cellar, and house wine was good. The only internet access in the lobby, but it is free. They offer laundry service but it is quite expensive and had a 48 hour turn around when we were there. I think this was a great experience but if I were to return to Cahors, I would probably stay in town.

After several days of budget travel, we splurged on this gorgeous chateau hotel outside of Cahors. Our room was luxurious, filled with little comforts like chocolates, fluffy bathrobes, and an enormous bathtub. The view out our window over the Lot River was unbelievable. The staff were extremely professional and welcoming; the grounds are stunning; and the public rooms were well-appointed and comfortable.

The Michelin-starred restaurant was closed the evening that we were there, but we dined in the bistro, which was very reasonably priced. Our meal was good but not outstanding, but the service was pleasant and competent. If you're interested in either restaurant, I'd check with the hotel to see what the hours are; the hotel website did not have the correct information.

The hotel has a beautiful swimming pool and bicycles you can borrow. We arrived too late to take advantage of the tour of their wine cellars and the wine tasting, but that looked like it would have been very interesting.

I've given £60 per night places great reviews, but there's an increased expectation that comes with a room priced at €360 per night.

Perched on top of a hill overlooking the Lot, the Chateau is impressive to look at, and the rooms are clean and have character. Importantly, the staff were pretty friendly. Particularly, it must be said, the junior guys who were only too willing to help with suitcases, advise on running routes etc.

But we encountered a bunch of annoyances. Again, you wouldn't think anything of them at a cheaper hotel:

1. The pamphlet described air conditioning controls. Not in our room. Yet we were told to keep the windows and shutters closed because of mosquitos from the river. We're in a mid summer heatwave. We had an extremely bad night's sleep, ridiculously hot.

2. No DVD player in room or at reception. I never watch TV in a hotel, but this trip we'd brought a box set and were hoping to watch a DVD. No such luck.

3. Shower? Just bath. Unless, the receptionist kindly informed me, I'd like to pay another €50 per night to upgrade my room.

4. Choice of pillow? Perhaps a slightly smaller one, sir, but different format, non.

5. Brasserie not open for Sunday lunch. Very frustrating. But you could spend hundreds of Euros on a 1-star lunch.

6. 4.30 Sunday with a fully booked hotel they have an automatic pool cleaner with wire training the whole pool waiting to entangle or worse children or adults alike. Fine to clean the pool but pre-10am, or after 6pm perhaps? They did remove it on request.

7. A problem for my wife were the linen sheets? we were really expecting Egyptian cotton. not very comfortable.

A couple of the 'irrelevant' (or nice touch) things were cool: TV that was a mirror when off, a luxuriously wide bath, and a nice corkscrew gift.

In sum, if you want a comfortable night's sleep, don't come here. The view and the location are stunning. And if you want an extremely expensive lunch and dinner (€290 per couple without wine or tip for dinner) it works too - and we were asked 4 or 5 times to book. It all depends what you want from your stay - nearly €1000 for 24 hour's great food and location and a bad night's sleep wasn't for us. (we ate out very nicely in nearby Cahors).

Room Tip: Don't go for room 34 if you want Aircon or a shower.

Gorgeous chateau in a dream like location. Our rooms were luxurious and cozy and the service and attention we received was perfect. I highly recommend Chateau de Mercues as it is a great destination for families yet romantic, historic and elegant.
