“a family holiday”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

We loved the cottage: the old house and the modern bathroom are a great mix. Kitchen has everything you need like a plunger, microwave, sharp knives, a masher etc. Suited us to a T. the location is remote, beautiful, full of wildlife, fantastic. We didn't realise that the 3 cottages were so close together, you could have a huge amount of fun with 3 families, one in each house.
I wouldn't change a thing, just stay there for longer!

We stayed 2 nights in the lovely traditional lodge with all modern comfort. A perfect place to visit the western part of Kangoroo Island and to explore the national park Flinders Chase with ist great nature and unique wildlife, a huge colony of seals is nearby at the rocks. We enjoyed it very much, even the cooking in this old kitchen which has the charme of an old british house.

We spent 2 nights at the Karatta Lodge at Cape du Coudic and it was amazing. It was meant to be the highlight of our 10 day tour from Melbourne through Adelaide, and it was. My children aged 6, 8 & 11 loved exploring the grounds and observing the wallabies. And as we were the only renters at the time, it really did feel as though we had the place to ourselves. The kitchen is very well equipped and the bathroom very modern. The gas fireplace was welcome as it was cold and stormy during our first night. It did feel as if the cottage would come loose from its foundation at times during the night. But that just added to the sense of adventure for us. The staff at the Info Centre were very helpful. And there was so much to do in that section of the island, that we only ventured to the eastern bit on the last day out. If you are planning to stay at Kangaroo Island and want an authentic but comfortable experience, then stay here. It is a treasure.

Room Tip: If you are worried at all about the remoteness, then request Troubridge Lodge. That is where the em...

We are a family consisting of nanna, mum and dad and 3 children aged 9 years down to 22 months. We loved the cottage which had plenty of space for us all and had everything you could require for all ages. It was clean, with good facilities. The cottages are in a wonderful position down in the scrub which had masses of wildflowers right behind the lighthouse and only a short walk from Admiralty Arch and the spectacular scenery of the south coast which includes wild seas, high cliffs, rocks and fur seals. The remarkable Rocks are a short drive away. It was quiet but at times windy. It was only a short drive to the visitor centre. I can highly recommend these beautifully preserved cottages which are also good value.

We stayed for two cold nights in June. I want to mention the time of year because some others talked about how hot is was or how windy it was. I highly recommend staying here. Some highlights:
1.) Away from it all - no phones, no distractions, which means...
2.) My kids and I played marathon games of monopoly together (which we don't do much of at home) and had a blast because...
3.) In June it gets dark by 5:15 - so hole up and have family time, but...
4.) We still took a stroll down to Admiral's Arch with the flashlight/torch they provided and enjoyed the company of no one but a few stray kangaroos and a bunch of seals since...
5.) No one else can get into the park at that time - and there weren't other people around to scare the wildlife away. I could have shaken hands with one of the kangaroos if it was allowed

Some tips for the actual accommodation:
1.) If you come in winter, bring slippers, the bathroom is out back and cold
2.) Enjoy the games and toys
3.) Read the blurb on the history of the place - and the lighthouse keeper stories provided
4.) Bring in enough food to cook - just enough/not too little/not too much. We hauled supplies in from Kingscote and rationed it right.

This was an unique experience that I highly recommend and only wish we'd had more time.

And, oh by the way, in the morning when daylight came, we still had over an hour before anyone showed up. I have great pictures at Remarkable Rocks as a result.

I thought staying in a lightkeepers cottage would be very exciting and a great experience and it was when we spend two nights in Troubridge Cottage recently. The surroundings are amazing-spectacular but it is very isolated and windy and noisy...It seems the chimneys have been blocked off at the bottom but that gush of wind down them and whistling was very loud. Unfortunately our children were very scared and we did not get much sleep. The cottage has everything you could want -warm, comfortable and clean. Would I stay here again??? not in Winter. I certainly have a greater respect for lightkeepers and If you are scared of ghosts, dont read the visitors books!!

Our stay in Parndana Lodge was magnificent, in that due to it's seclusion we were able to enjoy the natural surrounds as if they were in our own private backyard. The experience has left lasting fond memories for our family guests from the UK. Great to be away from mobile phones and TV !

Room Tip: Pack to be self sufficient
