Well located near Flinders Chase NP. Rooms neat and tidy with large bathroom. Restaurant service friendly and quick and food great. Good walking trails on the perimeters of accommodation. Quiet place.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The walls were a bit thin but otherwise the room was great. The front desk staff was super friendly (a fellow Southern Californian was there our first day!) and helped us plan out some of our tour stuff. The restaurant was pretty good and we really liked our waiters, although the service was not uber speedy (but what is the rush? There's nowhere else to be after sunset!). Our main recommendation is to stop by a market in Kingscote to bring some food/ drinks with you. The restaurant here has very specific hours (and not at all during lunch) and buying water, snacks, etc. was quite spendy if we wanted anything outside those hours. It was over an hour drive back to Kingscote and we learned too late that there were no other markets, etc. nearby where we could easily get food. But overall, we loved our experience on Kangaroo Island and had a lovely stay at this resort.

The main reason to stay here is that it's close to Flinders Chase NP. This is a good enough reason, as any other accommodation is quite a long drive unless you go to opposite ends of the spectrum - the super de-luxe (and super pricey) Southern Ocean Lodge, or self-catering, neither of which are for us.

The rooms are quite simple but perfectly comfortable and clean, aircon works well (which we needed in 45 degree heat). True the toiletries are limited but they are adequate. Maybe there aren't enough TV channels for some but we are not there to watch TV so weren't bothered by this.

The food was disappointing. The dinner menu looked quite interesting and varied but unfortunately the execution was generally poor. Breakfast was no better than adequate.

Reception and restaurant waiting staff were friendly and helpful.

Restaurant is 5-star, accom is 3.5 stars, and customer service is 5-star.
Quiet spot, close to national park. Hotel architecture looks good, designed to fit in with the bush surroundings.
Courtyard suites are pretty basic, equivalent to a motel room. Only about six television channels, some of them Foxtel. Free Wi-Fi available from common area only. Staff were exceptionally welcoming.
The restaurant staff were impeccable. The restaurant is the only decent eatery for miles. You can wear your thongs and t-shirt, but it really is a top of range dining experience, offering high-quality produce (mains about $30). (Try the KI Honey Cheesecake - it's amazing!!!)

Room Tip: Courtyard suites are basic motel rooms with an outdoor area with table and chairs overlooking the bu...

We stayed here for 2 nights in a family room. The room was nice, clean and spacious but we didn't see much of all the wildlife that they advertise online. The food in the restaurent is not gourmet and overpriced and the same goes for the breakfast. We went to other restaurants on the island that was far better. They seem to take the advantage of being pricy as it's located far away from a supermarket etc.

We ate lunch at this establishment as part of our coach tour of the Island.
The main courses were poor. My wife could not eat the calamari and chips as one was vulcanised and the other rock hard. The chicken served with my salad was small chunks of brown meat that were overly chewy.
The pudding, a bought in cake, was fine.
I would not eat here again.

We were there to see kangaroos, koalas, etc. They are nocturnal. The "nature walk" on the property is difficult to navigate during the day -let alone at night. There is also little grass on the property (which kangaroos & Wallabies prefer.) Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (a few miles away) offers a nocturnal tour, but there was no way to get there. One cannot drive after dark (no car rental company will insure you after dark -they don't want you to drive after dark.) & Wilderness Retreat staff won't give rides. Told us it's not their problem if we couldn't drive. The property is close to Flinder's Chase, etc., but lots of other properties are within a couple of miles and they offer much more in terms of wildlife, options re: food, better accommodations. etc. Look carefully at pictures of the "private decks opening into the courtyard"!
