We booked 2 nights at The George when looking for somewhere to stay locally for an event. From start to finish our experience was wonderful - welcoming staff and comfortable, cosy, well-equipped rooms. We ate the 'Valentines Menu' in the evening which was delicious and served promptly, as well as having breakfast in the bar on 2 mornings. This was lovely, and nothing was too much trouble. We came away with the impression this is a well-run family business which was incredibly warm and welcoming. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: We stayed in the 'Chardstock' room upstairs which was cosy and welcoming.

Things are on the up at The George after a desperate year. However there are one or two things that would really make a lot of difference. Firstly the heating. It's a hell of a building to heat but in Winter it needs its fires lit and the heating on. On many nights the heating is on but it's not often the fires are lit. And on some quieter nights there's no fire and no heating. Consistency is what's needed. I'm sorry but I can't face sitting there in the cold.

Ignore any review prior to August 2013. Linda and her family only took over in July last year and have re-created a truly warm and inviting village pub environment. The standard menu is small but real "pub grub" and there are always a number of daily specials available. There are always a number of locals propping up "compost corner" which creates a real community atmosphere. Brian keeps a good cellar and the beer is always excellent from both local breweries and the occasional guest ale. Can't speak for the fizz-bank lager rubbish but as this is tasteless, cold and fizzy then there's nothing to go wrong. They have all embraced village life and have put on a number of special events for Halloween, Christmas and New year all of which were well attended and successful.
If you're looking for a good country pub with good beer and great food then visit the George.

I have family in Chardstock and have visited the pub on a few occasions over the past couple of years. I have to admit that my previous trip to the George was very poor. Bad food and many other problems.

The Pub was taken over by Linda and members of her family 6 months ago and what a transformation. I had to be down for a family thing for a few nights and we ate here on 2 nights and also had Sunday lunch. The menu has been kept small but this means that what you do get is good tasty home cooked food. The Sunday lunch too was great.....lots of very tasty food and all for a very good price.

I can recommend the pub and hope that more people will visit and help support them in putting the pub back on the map.

Visited here whilst on holiday and it was good beer, friendly service and nice food. All at a reasonable price too. Will be back when in the area. May even stay here as a good value for money option for short break.

I recently stayed at the George Inn in Chardstock with family. The owner Linda was very welcoming along with other family members who help run the establishment. Most definitely a local pub but, extremely welcoming to those passing through as well. Good home cooked food at very reasonable prices. I understand that the new owner has only been there around six months and has made lots of changes to start bringing the pub back up to scratch. Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very welcome. I will definitely be visiting again very soon. A thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

Room Tip: All rooms were comfortable. I stayed downstairs but my daughters informed me the upstairs rooms were...

My wife and I were looking for a place to stay whilst on holiday in the area and by following the sign in Tytherleigh, found The George Inn in Chardstock. We were shown to the Chardstock Room which was situated as one of 4 rooms, in a separate building to the pub. The room was clean and airy with an en-suite bathroom at a price of £70 for B & B. We immediately asked if we could stay for 3 nights. Linda and her family have certainly worked hard to turning this pub around after what must have been a long period of mis-managment. A full English breakfast was superb and our evening meals were delicious. The menu was not extensive but perfectly adequate with 4 or 5 specials each day often illuminated by a dish with an Italian or Greek influence. A choice of wines at reasonable prices and real ales kept in good condition. My wife and I also played darts and pool in the games area. Super friendly service and offering good value for money. The support of the locals was very evident and we think the George Inn will go from strength to strength. We are so pleased to have found it and we look forward to returning at sometime in the future.
