My fiancé and I went to Barile to do genealogical research in Barile and stayed at the Grand Hotel Garden for 3 nights. Basically, the hotel is the only one in town and is located approx. 3 km from Barile. It is convenient to the Strada Statale, so would probably be a great location for touring the surrounding wine area.

We arrived in the rain, and there is no covered area at which to unload luggage... so we got pretty soaked. Check in was very efficient. Our room was very clean and had a lovely view of the countryside and the hotel pool (which was covered at the time). The room was of average size, but the bathroom was very small. So was the shower. It was disappointing to not have a bath tub for the price we were paying for the room. The downstairs bar was very poorly stocked. The daily breakfast, which was included in the price of the room, was very good with a nice selection of meats, fruit, cereals, and cheeses.

We had a need for a doctor at 4:30 one morning. The desk staff called one immediately, and a doctor was there by 5:00. We then needed 3 prescriptions filled, and by 9:00 the staff (without my having to ask) had them delivered from the local pharmacy at no additional cost. The staff was also very solicitous re: my fiancé's health for the remainder of our trip, making sure that his every need was taken care of.

While the hotel, for the price, seemed a bit average, the staff and their care for the guests were head and shoulders above other places I've stayed.

this hotel stands in the beautiful country side of southern Italy, surrounded by olive trees. the hotel has large grounds with tennis courts, football pitch and a large swimming pool, and garden areas. the food is typical Italian, and they serve excellent local wines. the rooms are clean and roomy with fabulous views of the local country side, they all have en-suite bathrooms. a great hotel and a good base to tour the interesting sites of Basilicata .

Hotel is modern and quite nice. One of the best of the area. Very good value. The pool is beautiful. Only bad thing: pool opens at 9, breakfast ends at 9:30 and check out is at 10:30... In other words it is impossible to wake up, swim in the pool and then have breakfast. But staff is nice and they let us stay till 11. I recommend hotel move check out time and extend breakfast.
