“Great Hotel, But You've Got to be the Right Person For It”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2012

We enjoyed our stay there and the 5 rating should say enough. This hotel has wonderful strengths, but please see more below. The best thing about it is the innkeeper. He is wonderful. He made our visit to San Gimignano perfect with his thoughts and recommendations. He made our breakfasts works of art. His garden was beautiful, the views were wonderful and we loved falling asleep with the windows open over the Tuscan countryside over the vineyards. My wife said her sleep there was the best she'd had in the entire trip.

Before booking here, though, be sure you are right for this place. First, it does not have air conditioning, which, 360 days a year shouldn't matter in this place... We were there in late August in a heat wave, so in the evenings it wasn't a problem but if you stay in the room, it would be. Second, its internet is very funky. These days, it shouldn't be a problem, but it was here. Finally, it was "off the grid". It was about 5 KM outside of San Gimignano, which is actually a long way on those roads.

I mention all this so you can properly evaluate it. If you want a lovely room with a truly wonderful innkeeper who is enormously sincere, but not in the town itself, this is definitely your place. If you need to be in the town or you must have air conditioning 365 days or you plan to be there in August and plan to stay in the room, please just consider the above.

Net, though, our innkeeper's honesty and caring trumps all the concerns and we net out a "5".

Stayed one night here with my family in August. Our host was charming and the rooms very comfortable; we enjoyed our stay and have no complaints.

However, it was not what we were expecting.

Location
The hotel is not in some rural idyll but on a hairpin bend on the main road to San Gimigniano, and the building is not set back but sits directly on this road with no front garden. So there is some traffic noise - at least we heard it in our two rooms which were at the front. Our view was of the buildings opposite, where we heard neighbours chatting and saw them through their windows - we had been hoping to look out on the gorgeous hills, vineyards and olive groves of the area. The small pretty garden is alongside the road also, and there does not appear to be any other communal area.

Breakfast
We were overnighting en route back to the UK and were looking forward to filling our boots with the much lauded breakfast for a long day’s drive ahead of us. On arrival in the dining room we were a little disappointed: the tables were set with lots of small things in pre-packaged portions (nutella, toasts etc) and one of those table bins for wrappers. There was no buffet to speak off, just a small quantity of salami and cheese and some little bags of what looked like cocopops without their boxes. After we had made a start on this, plates started to arrive: first two types of homemade cake; then, rather unexpectedly, some pizza (small pieces and rather doughy), lastly two fruit platters, with paper thin slices of a medley of fruits beautifully arranged. The fruit was very welcome but we would have preferred to know what was coming and ideally to have started with the fruit as the only really healthy option available.

It’s difficult to find more arguments to make this family run perfect hotel more attractive. We based our choice on the reviews, and we were right – it was a perfect choice to explore Tuscany – Florence, Sienna, Voltera, and of course the unique San Gimignano. We felt among best friends, in the most comfortable room, with breathtaking views and with the incredible breakfast. Many thanks to Elio and Stefana.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Olive room - great views.

We thorough enjoyed our 2 night stay. The host was excellent and the home made breakfast was out of this world. The only slight blot was the fact the air conditioning unit in the room was out of action- not much fun in 40 degree heat!

This famlly run small boutique hotel in the village of Ulignano and in the heart of Tuscany deserves its five star rating. We stayed at this Hotel 7/17/12-7/22/12. A quaint hotel located on a hill overlooking the vineyards of Tuscany, Hotel Vecchio Asilo offers everything a traveler could ask for, from its peaceful surroundings to the extra personal service its owners provide. We rented a car in Florence and drove to Ulignano, and spent 5 days touring the countrysides many villages, each evening returning to Hotel Vecchio Asilo. The rooms are large, exceptionally clean and moderan, and decorated in Tuscany style. The breakfast each morning is exceptional. The owners Stephanie and Elio go out of their way to make sure their guests are comfortable and feel welcomed. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in this region. We hope to return someday. Ciao!

Room Tip: We cannot imagine any room not being as nice as ours.

Believe everything you read about this place. The rooms are gorgeous, the windows open to the wine yards, the host is extremely friendly and helpful - and speaks English. Plus you probably won't find a better breakfast anywhere in Italy - it consists of fresh bread, different kinds of cheese and ham, home made cake and fresh fruit. No restaurant apart from the breakfast. It's in the country side, so you need a car, but it's the perfect stop if you are exploring Tuscany.

This is a small inn in the rolling hills of central Tuscany. Stayed a few days and would absolutely repeat and reccomend. It is about 20 minutes from Sienna or S Gimignano, an hour and change from Florence or Pisa. The chianti regions, Montalcino, and Montepulcino, are easy day trips, as is Siena or Arezzo, and I would imagine the beach cities. I would even reccomend this place for people who want to see Firenze or Pisa, but don't want to stay in the city overnight. Although you will probably need a car here, and you generally would not want to drive into those cities. I was happy to let our host, Ellio, reccomend places to visit every morning. He made some excellent itinararies.

Rooms are tidy and have a private bath with shower. Beds are comfortable and, although there is no Air Conditioning, it really does cool down in the evening. Fans provide ample fresh air. There is a pool, as well as several outdoor tables to sip a bottle of wine at. Breakfast is glorious, served with coffee, cakes, cheeses, and fresh fruits. I loved the cakes, which were differrnt every day.

WiFi is not free, but inexpensive, although it was spotty in the room. It worked at breakfast.

There are less than 10 rooms at this place, and it has a couples vibe, but I think childeren would be fine. I do not think there are any restaurants within walking distance, but the regions is best seen by day trips. Service is really great. It would be a great place for a small group of people, especially if day tripping to wine country sounds nice.

I would definitly reccomend this place and would like to stay again.
