This review doesn't need many words, but I'll sing all the praises.
Janet welcomed us with open arms, like we were old friends. She gave us a tour around the cottage which is just perfect. It is light and airy. It's immaculately clean (my husband has allergies, which didn't bother him all week). It's equipped with everything you need and more; I kept finding facilities during the week, I didn't know were there before.
It has a beautiful walled garden with flowers in bloom (and outdoor kitchen/bbq), which have recieved a lot of love to grow. It has a great view over the neighbouring fields and loch Gruinart. The place is remote; we found it quite reassuring to know the owners lived "next door".
Janet and Andrew are inspirational people, ever busy with all sorts of jobs and have proven for us to be an invaluable source of information. They know everyone and everything on the island. And yes, Islay's oysters are the best!
We left after a week with crying kids in the car, missing Dougaldog, Sandy and Islay (the dog) already.
The island is beautiful. We had a great time visiting the beaches, the distilleries and just enjoying the quiet island-life.
Janet, thank you very much, you're a gem!
Islay is a beautiful island with much to do if you are interested - which we are - in nature and wildlife. Coullabus Beag is set in rolling farm and moorland with gorgeous views in every direction. The house is spacious, comfortable and decorated tastefully throughout. The kitchen is particularly well appointed and all equipment is easy to use. The cottage has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one of which is adapted for use by a wheelchair user. There is a neat little garden with a sheltered terrace. We sat there one evening watching the sun go down. Thankfully the midges this year were on holiday somewhere else! The place is pet friendly - indeed the owners run a kennel in their adjacent home. The owners were friendly and helpful when needed. We didn't see that much of them as we were out most days and they were busy with work and family.
We had a really lovely time there but we had one or two minor niggles. The cottage was much further inland than we had expected so we had quite a drive after getting off the ferry. It was also quite a way to the major town, Bowmore. Also, the rear of the cottage backed onto a work yard which was also unexpected.
We are a family of four and this was our first visit to Islay. We weren't disappointed! The bungalow is extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. There's everything you could need - and more! Although this was July, our first morning was dreary and wet - but that didn't spoil our day - we lit the log burner (plenty of wood available at no charge) and cosied up! The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped. There are two bathrooms/shower rooms - very handy! The two bedrooms are, again, very well furnished. The beds were very comfortable - in the twin room the beds were adjustable for feet/back height and angle. The views are uninterrupted from the bungalow and we were fortunate to see some amazing sunsets while we were there. Janet and Andrew were great hosts - there when you need them but not in your face. Our only complaint is that we should've booked a longer stay! We highly recommend this accommodation and would definitely book again when we next get the chance to visit this beautiful island.
The house is very well equipped. Due to the central location near Loch Gruinart you have a good starting point to explore the island. And especially nice were the pleasant conversations with the owner. We had a very exciting week and have known Islay very well. So we can only say - thank you very much.
Andreas and Dirk
Thank you for a great feis ile week 2017.
The cottage is modern and fully equipped, perfectly situated for exploring the beautiful island. Last but not least very nice and helpful hosts.
All in all, we cannot wait to come back.
Peaceful bungalow in former farmyard next door to the owners' house. All mod cons - including a bread maker! Lovely views across to Loch Guirnart. Great location for exploring the Rinns and the rest of Islay.
Coullabus Beag has a beautiful, large, spacious and extremely comfortable lounge. On dull days it is amazingly bright as, apart from the windows and doors, shafts of daylight also come from above. The kitchen is equipped with good quality appliances and there is literally everything you could possibly want in it - and certainly much more in the cupboards and drawers than is usually found in self catering accommodation. Two lovely bathrooms are a bonus in a two bedroom house. The garden area is also lovely with decking looking onto an attractively laid out flower garden and moorland views straight ahead. Marley, our collie, thought it was great too and just loved his walks on the large beach just two miles away.
