“Chic beach side hotel with excellent service!”
Reviewed 26 July 2011

The Ammos hotel is truly one of a kind and definitely worth a stay while in Chania. The hotel itself is very modern in it's design and interiors. We stayed both in a sea view suite as well as a garden suite. Both rooms were excellent and very elegantly done up. The sea view room was overlooking the beach and had a nice spacious balcony, the complimentary bottle of wine was also a nice touch. The rooms as well as the bathrooms were spacious and very clean. The breakfast buffet was good and varied. In terms of what really stood out for us at this hotel - It would have to be Nikos and Dimitra. They're both very friendly and helpful people who go out of their way to meet your requirements. I also have to point out that the response to emails for reservations, car bookings, sight seeing etc were always prompt and very detailed...best way to make a good first impression. Nikos being the owner of the property is omnipresent and always available to have a chat and provide his inputs. Dimitra is the perfect picture of efficiency with her useful inputs on sights to see, restaurants, driving routes etc. A big Thanks to both of them for ensuring we had a great time in Crete! And Nikos - we didn't get a chance to say thanks for the complimentary drinks at dinner - so thanks! Would highly recommend you rent a car as there's lots to see and Crete is a big island. Don't miss Elafonisi beach or the Balos lagoon!

As one of the top-rated boutique hotels on TA , the strengths of this place are well-established: sleek design, quality furnishings, food that's competitive (in both price and quality) with the restaurants in Chania, and bend-over-backwards service.

It's worth stressing just how easy the layout is: the lobby leads into the restaurant onto the patio to the pool to the beach - this is literally not even 100 steps. With the cafe serving you everywhere (yes, they will bring you beer on the beach) and open all day, it is very possible to not leave the premises for a long weekend or even a week.

And this is exactly what makes it a magnet for parents with toddlers. In May - good weather, but the schools aren't out yet - this place was packed with parents and under-5 children. Given this is Western Crete, they tended to be Scandinavian and German, who seem to have a more relaxed attitude to parenting than some of their Anglo- counterparts. The kids were never loud or unruly, but if you came here looking for a raver or gay boutique hotel experience you might have felt a bit out of place. Conversely, aging hipsters with young ones are only too welcome.

Also, Ammos is not *quite* as close to Chania as you might think. 15-20 minutes by bus, and 10 by taxi. And the taxis do add up. It's also handy enough to other nice beaches and sites in the area, that all together it's worth considering a car - if you can tear yourself away from Ammos.

That title may only make sense if you have watched the UK adverts for carlsberg, but basically the place is perfect for kids. And, as other travellers have testified, it still works for couples.
We came at the end of June for a week with our 2 month
old baby and were quite nervous about how we would cope. Frankly there was nothing to worry about. The hotel provided a cot, a baby-bath and baby-towels and there are a couple supermarkets 10 mins walk with all the baby stuff (aptamil powder, pampers, johnsons baby wipes etc) you need so there is no need to worry using up your precious weigh allowances on more than just the emergency supplies for the plane.
You have the option of sea view studios by the pool (great idea with kids or babies) which allows you to pop back in and out of the room easily for baby matters (heating bottles etc) or to have the baby in the room while you sit on the porch (only afternoon sun). The sun loungers on the beach (just below the pool) or around the pool have sufficient shade (from the palm leaf umbrellas) for a baby and the bar serves reasonably priced food (breakfasts were amazing and the orange cake is to die for) and drink to keep you more than happy for your entire trip. Additionally Nikos and his staff (who are amazingly helpful and friendly) have lots of good suggestions for excursions and restaurants (chania town is only 10€ in a taxi) so you are able to get out and about and profit from all that Crete has to offer.
When we left for the considerably more expensive Domes of Elounda, Nikos made sure we had a care package of cheese and other savoury pies so sustain us. And when they discovered that my wife had left her jacket they contacted us and arranged to have it couriered to Elounda for us.
To sum up... We have been to some amazing hotels (taj palaces in Rajasthan, the Chedi in chiang mai, paradee on ko Samet etc) and this ranks up there with the best for how much we loved the place. Sadly Domes of Elounda (at over double the price - for the room as well as the food and drink) fell well short of this level... Especially with regard to it's suitability for somewhere for babies. So if you are deciding whether to take a baby on holiday, do so.. Go to Crete and stay at Ammos Hotel. You will love it.

Overall: a boutique style hotel on a true beachfront location offering a unique " Greek" atmosphere. The owners are delightful and the staff all very efficient & friendly. The hotel also offers excellent value for travelers. Loved it and wished we had more time to enjoy !

Location :The Ammos Hotel is located approximately 5km from Chania on the beautiful sandy beach of Glaros and 1km from the small villages of Galatas & Dalatsos.

Check-in : as soon as we drove into Ammos Hotel car ark we warmly greeted & shown directly to our room.

Room : our sea view room 42 had stunning views of the sea. Immediately entering into the room we felt the room displayed a lovely Greek atmosphere with it's tailor made well designed colorful furniture.

Our room had a small kitchenette , couch , tv , working desk , balcony with table & chairs. The bathroom was again spacious with a nice modern feel.

Food: breakfast was excellent and very colourful. The kitchen stays open all day and serves very good Cretan & Greek recipes. We only used the restaurant for breakfast and lunch and enjoyed both. There are some other interesting restaurants on the beachfront in the cute village of Galatas where we dined in the evenings.

Beach & pool: fabulous little beach with sand & no pebbles. Plenty of deck chairs & umbrellas available. The pool large overlooking the beach.

Room Tip: Ask for front sea view room with balcony.

Just stayed at Ammos for 6 nights and it was brilliant. The location is amazing, food was pretty much the best in Chania and the staff are fabulous. Our room with balcony was right on the beach with amazing sunsets every evening. Everything was clean, comfortable and well taken care of. It's a kid friendly hotel, but we had no problems with noise and such.
Highlight: the flexibility and friendliness of the staff (you're not just a number)

Due to strikes we had to stay one extra night - Nikos booked us a room next door at the 5 star hotel and everything seemed cold in comparison.

We stayed at the Ammos for 6 nights to kick off our 2-week trip to the Greek islands and could *not* have been any happier with this place!! We had a sea view studio and it was the perfect room - beautiful view, lovely little kitchenette, beautiful bathroom and the most comfortable bed we slept on in Greece. The staff was AMAZING - more like family than like a hotel - helping us with our million questions, showing us where to go and things to see, recommending restaurants, road trips, excursions, even pharmacies (of which, unfortunately, we needed a lot - silly post-wedding colds!). I had a massage our first day there and it was one of the best massages of my whole life. The restaurant is delicious and the beach/pool area are gorgeous. This hotel somehow manages to appeal to both honeymooners AND families, without being exclusive to either, although I'm not sure quite how they do it. But they do. Loved it!
