“Wonderful week!”
Reviewed 23 June 2013

First of all, we are a couple. We wanted to have a relaxing week close to the sea to enjoy some nice weather. We got much much more than this at Ammos! Starting from our arrival in the parking of the hotel, each moment spent at Ammos in the following week has been pleasant.

The staff: all of them are nice, polite, helpful, and extremely professional. What we really liked of the crew is that all of them do a very good job. As a consequence, when you eat something the food is very good, when you order a cocktail it tastes sooooo good, when they recommend to drink a wine the wine is good, when they point out a place to visit in the island the place is worth visiting, and so on. One last thing, the hotel is not big, which means that after few hours from your arrival every member of the staff treats you as part of the family (we really appreciated this!).

The hotel: there is a nice atmosphere, the design solutions adopted for the decoration are very nice; the pool is five steps away from the restaurant, and the beach is five steps away from the pool (both the pool and the beach are well organized with deck chairs and sunshades). There is no crowd around, and no noise. In fact the hotel is not so big, and you always have the feeling to share the space with 20-30 people. Very nice. The beach in front of the hotel is ideal to spend relaxing afternoons, maybe after spending the first part of the day exploring the island. The sea water is clear, and you can enjoy nice sunsets. Our room, a sea view studio, was very nice with a useful air-conditioner. Btw, the small extra-price per day of a sea-view studio with respect to the garden-view studio is more than worth paying (check the picture).

To conclude...we loved this place, we had a wonderful time there, we would like to be always there!

We labored whether to stay at a hotel or try to find a villa in Crete. Well, villas are not that available on Crete, so we were advised by a Fodor's certified commentor to check out the Ammos Hotel. We're glad we did. The staff was a amazing. Friendly, hard working and eager to please. We loved the food and thought it was a wonderful modern take on classic Greek dinning. Try the Greek yogurt parfait with crushed graham crackers at the bottom. Wonderful. Mykos, the owner, was astonishingly accessible. He recommended a number of great activities for my family and children. My kids are older--21, 22 and 24--and they were in the minority. There were a lot of younger partners with kids ages 2 to 6 years old. All of them were remarkably well behaved--the Brits being so much more mindful of their kids being polite than Americans (I am American so I can say that). The style and design of the Ammos is very contemporary. The location, on the beach, can't be beat. It turned out that this hotel had the intimacy of a villa but with a great staff who dotes over guests. Great job! Worth having three rooms for the weeks. Thanks everyone at the Ammos for making our stay so memorable. Some day, some way, we will be back. PS the Coco Mat mattresses are dreamy. I only wish I could buy one in the US--they thought of everything at the Ammos!

Room Tip: Try the chicken or rabbit in red wine. Wonderful

We really enjoyed our time in Ammos and we will recommend this hotel to our friends.

From the designer furniture through to the colour scheme and the general ambiance, this place has it all. The white exteriors offset by blue doors, the same colour as the gorgeous sea and sky, its just a relaxing atmosphere and some where you're happy to spend oodles of time.

They have a pool but I'm not a pool swimmer, lucky as you are literally right on the beach. There are beach loungers if you want them, or pool side. If you have kids, the staff could not be more welcoming to people with young families and they provide loads of kids toys, inflatable pool toys, floaties etc so you don't need to bring your own. The staff are super helpful with day to day plans, special occasions, whatever you need they will do it. The food is delicious, lighter than most of the other Greek Tavernas which is perfect. Best potato chips! Good drink selections.

Little touches like fresh flowers on your balcony, cookies and chocolates for turn down and the constant sounds of the sea make this place wonderful. The rooms are not huge but they are comfortable. The location is great as its only an 8 euro cab ride into the Old Town of Chania. Don't neglect taking a drive in the other direction away from the old town because there are some beautiful vistas as you drive along the coast. Also trust anything that Nikkos tells you to do, he will not steer you wrong with food/restaurant choice, drives to quaint villages, sightseeing or great photo opportunities.

This my second time at Ammos and I would make it three in a heartbeat.

Wonderful property. Lovely pool and beach. The grounds and design are terrific. The staff are all you could ask for.

The food in the restaurant is also excellent. It's rare for me to eat in a hotel, but here? Absolutely. Both times we have arrived past 11pm at night and both times getting dinner has been no problem. Terrific service.

Their best rooms have a sea view and balcony with double bed. This is my biggest criticism of the hotel. The rooms could do with being larger. They are all relatively small. They also aren't the brightest rooms as not enough light gets in, but the decor is nice and last year my sister with her two kids adored the poolside rooms.

That's why it's a 4. You do pay a premium to stay here and because of that I wish the rooms were bigger. We have stayed in other hotels in the area with much larger rooms but they don't have that Ammos touch. That's why it trumps the others.

I really wanted to write a review in response to the one below - I can't think of anything more unlikely than a member of the Ammos team being anything less than utterly charming!

Myself my husband and my 3 and a half year old son had a wonderful week there and returned home only on Saturday. From the front desk staff, to the cleaners, to the restaurant staff (and the brilliant nursery teacher - offering 2 hours of complimentary crèche each day) everyone was helpful, kind, and beyond tolerant of my somewhat lively little boy!

We stayed in the sea view deluxe as a treat, a great view and not to be missed.

Don't be put off - and especially if you have children - this is one of the friendliest places you could stay in.

I spent the Easter holidays at Ammos with my girlfriend and our friends (two more couples). Eventhough i had heard lots of good things about the hotel, i was still pleasantly surprised: the kindest and most efficient stuff i ve met, delicious food (the restaurant is a destination for picky eaters), beautiful sandy beach and sunset, designer furniture everywhere, Nikos (the owner) was so helpful and friendly... And one more thing which i found unique: Most guests we met at the hotel were repeaters from all over the world. They created a sophisticated and interesting crowd (even the children were discreet!). Ammos is what modern greek hospitality should look like.
