What a gem after a monotonous 23 mile hike from Richmond. Highly recommended. Excellent food and beer at reasonable prices. Very good rooms and showers. Landlord and staff could not do enough for you.

I only stayed here one night and found it adequate, but I wouldn't want to stay any longer. the rooms were in a separate unit across the yard from the pub. They were clean and reasonably spacious, but with only the basic comforts. There was nowhere to hang any wet clothing, although the electric heaters could be adjusted to suit yourself. The choice at breakfast was limited with no fresh fruit and service was slow as there was only one member of staff on duty, although she was friendly and helpful. As a stopover this place is fine, but if you want a base for a few days I'd look elsewhere.

I stayed here while doing the coast to coast in August. Arrived at 7pm and received a very warm welcome and experienced a great overall atmosphere at the pub. The food and beer were excellent and a perfect pick up after a long days walk from Reeth. We camped in the garden and were able to have a shower in one of the spare rooms. Breakfast was good and we paid for a pack lunch the next day.

You don't get many pubs like this now, it has real character, it isn't posh but who needs that when walking, it is clean, cheap and welcoming.... that should be the most important things for coast to coasters.

Doing the coast to coast and came here for an evening meal following the long walk from Richmond on 17th July 2013 (hot day!). Although not accommodated here (staying at B&B up the road in Ingleby Arncliffe) was advised that this is the only near place to get a meal. Arrived at the inn a little late around 8:40pm only to find that they had finished serving food for the day - not even a bar snack available. Returned to my B&B hungy! I guess the 2012 edition of Henry Stedman's C2C guide book which says that food is served here from 6-9pm is a little out-of-date. My advice is to get there early!

Ate dinner here. Service was good , served reasonably quickly despite numerous eaters. Beef salad was pretty basic , two slices of beef aside a salad, entrees were deep fried . Hit the spot after a says walk.

Surprisingly devoid of a19 noise , given its proximity.

Landlady was pleasant and food was good for pub food. Friendly atmosphere and nice and unpretentious with a mix of locals and Coast to Coasters.

Not gourmet food but you wouldn't expect that here, but the menu had a reasonable choice (reasonable enough to imagine that it's not all prepared and reheated like some places), service was good and it was reasonable value.

Thank you for your review for also painting an accurate, independant picture of what to expect here. The A19 is not an issue, as you say, and our accommodation is adjoined to the pub also. We offer honest home cooked food from salmon to steak at an appropriate price and offer Coast to Coast walkers the chance to catch up together, as they always do, in a warming enviroment. As with all our customers, thank you for your business.

Landed at the hotel to meet up with some friends doing the coast to coast found Steve to be most helpful and accommodating. The whole experience was more than pleasant and we shall be going back the next time we are in the area.
