Reviewed 31 July 2012 via mobile

This hotel consists of a main building with rooms as any hotel and a village build around a piazza as the medieval italian villages, with 2 stories houses, containing larger rooms than those at the main building.
For experiencing the originality of this resort I suggest you book a room in the village ( Borgo rooms ).
The architect who designed and decorated the resort is a creative genius. He used blocks and carved tufa stone to create a huge complex of buildings, corridors, terraces, balconies, corners, piazzas, etc that look as they would have always been there. The effort put on decoration details in each rooom is astonishing. Everything recreates the Puglian tradition.
The hotel has 3 huge pools plus an indoor pool and oversized spa. For sea bathing there are two options : one rocky and the other with sand, on short complimentary shuttle service running all day every half hour. The beach has a restaurant and all the amenities needed.
Public areas are very tastefull and original. A formal restaurant a la carte, a pizzeria and a buffet restaurant all serve excelent food. Breakfast is buffet style with everything you would expect, except fresh baguettes or the likes ( only toast bread ) .
WIFI is complimentary throughout the whole property except at the beach. Speeds can be very low or good depending of time. I had to switch to a cabel conection because WIFI signal was weak in the room, but later they brought a private rooter and signal power was OK. Speeds go from 0,4 mb/s to 3 mb/s.
We had a very nice deluxe borgo room with a living room, compartimented bathroom with shower cabin, tub and separate WC+bidet of superb design. The bedroom was very comfortable and AC worked perfectly.
The staff is well trained and kind.
You have to take note this a family oriented hotel, full of families with small children. The hotel says children are supposed to go to pool #3 but they do not enforce this rule, so there are small children all over.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your lovely review!

Our talented young architect took as inspiration the “Masseria”, the classic fortified farmhouses of the area and the “centro storico” of local villages. In our opinion, the outcome is extraordinary!

I also noted that you were in a Borgo room. Families, particularly, love these picturesque townhouses accommodations, a successful recreation of an Italian village. Definitely a very good choice!

I would be very pleased to personally take care of your next booking, should you decide to visit us again.
Warm Regards,

Our 3pm check in to our villa became a 445pm check in as multiple managers informed us of 'problems'. Unacceptable when paying four figures per night. The Guest Relations Manager comped us our first nights meal which was a fair solution. The following morning the same manager stopped by our breakfast table ostensibly to check on how things were going but really to make it clear that we had to be out by 12pm on our check out day. Class. The same evening thinking there would be flexibility to dining options we passed by the buffet dinner held in the piazza of the hotel. One of the 'managers' who had dealt with our very late check in greeted us and asked if there was anything he could do. We suggested dining at the buffet. 'we have 60 covers and that is absolutely not possible' was the reply. Thanks for your help. Our family ate in the fine dining instead. Upon been given the bill I was reprimanded for not wearing long trousers. At no point during our stay had we been made aware of this. Despite all this the villas and hotel pools are world class. So the net is that should the hotel be able to conceptualise service and deliver on it then this resort has potential.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your frank and constructive feedback. Borgo Egnazia is beautiful but possibly not yet perfect.
We are working relentlessly to match our extraordinary physical attributes with an outstanding service and aim at getting everything 100% right soon.
I would be very pleased to meet you again by the pool with a refreshing glass of Prosecco like the day of your departure. I am confident that you would witness pure style, elegance, luxury and outstanding service!
Warm Regards,
Luciano

We stayed in the hotel for a fortnight in July and overall we had a lovely holiday. We had booked a grand suite in the hotel with an interconnecting room for us and our three children and both rooms were stunning. The bathroom of the suite was utterly fabulous as were the dual-aspect views of the coastline across the olive groves and the Villas.
HOWEVER I am stunned by the number of reviews that comment on the excellent standards of service at Borgo Egnazia. We were very impressed by the structure and the decor but the service was patchy and totally unmanaged. Not what we were expecting at all. Service was always charming and friendly BUT when I'm spending over £12,000 on a holiday I expect efficiency and attentiveness along with the charm! Poolside service in particular was virtually non-existent. We spent time at both the family pool and the adult pools, as well as at both beaches, and there was no-one on hand to move umbrellas, sunbeds, replace wet towels, take drinks orders, etc etc. Of course, if you asked the lifeguard for help she wouldn't hesitate but at this price I expect someone to be available without having to go seeking it out! We have stayed all over the world and have generally found the level of service at Four Seasons properties to be unmatched. If Borgo Egnazia were to adopt this model of service then they would have something really very special.
Our children didn't go inside the Kids Club but when I looked in it was one of the nicest, brightest I have seen. The staff were delightful. I can honestly say I have never witnessed Kids Club staff as engaged with the children as these staff seemed to be. Excellent.
The sandy beach was okay but not worth the drive. The rocky beach was lovely when the sea was calm with a great restaurant for lunch and cabanas if you were lucky to get one! What let this down for us was having to wait up to 20 minutes for a golf buggy to transport us across the golf course. This is the sort of thing that should be available on request at a resort of this standard. Again, patchy service is just not good enough.
The Due Camini restaurant was a very good experience - the breakfast buffet was excellent and housed in airy, light surroundings but there was no a la carte menu which was a disappointment.
Dinner was also excellent and beautifully presented although the children's menu didn't change at all over two weeks! Clearly they would prefer families to dine at La Frasca buffet restaurant by the family pool but we tried this and DO NOT RECOMMEND! Food was tasteless, of poor quality and not well presented. Children (and adults!) were dipping fingers into the dishes and pulling apart the pizza. UGH. It was like a dodgy wedding buffet.
To our horror, we discovered that another family had paid more than we had for two weeks in a Grand Townhouse and were limited to eating dinner in this restaurant every night unless they paid a supplement to eat at the hotel!! The supplement was 50 euros per adult and 25 euros per child!! What an insult! If you're spending upwards of £10,000 on a holiday you don't expect to have to pay even more to upgrade yourselves from a school dinner buffet!!!
If service levels were to improve, we would definitely return. But we would steer clear of the Borgo and its buffets and definitely stay at the hotel again.

Room Tip: Grand Suite in the Corte (hotel) fabulous. Dual-aspect views of the coastline. Borgo townhouses cram...

Dear Guest,

First of all, I am glad that you have enjoyed both the Borgo and its surroundings and that you had a lovely holiday. No doubt that Borgo is a complex union of first-class accommodations with a breathtaking view: fertile farmland, dotted with centuries-old olive trees!

With regards to your comments, I am well aware that anticipation to the client’s need is taken for granted from our clientele. We relentlessly strive to provide the expected services to our guests, however we might have occasionally fallen short on superior service delivery. This is no excuse and we are working diligently to make sure all our guests have the best possible experience.

We have greatly increased the number of Pool and Beach attendants and I would confidently assure you that no client is left without attentive and caring pool or beach service. We have shuttles running every 15 minutes all day long to La Fonte Beach, fine white sand and clear blue water, and every 20 minutes to Cala Masciola Beach, fully decked and equipped with loungers. We have recently implemented special dining experiences every night outside our usual restaurants offer. Our guests enjoy a varied dining experience. For instance “Cala Masciola by Night” features aperitifs on the beach, a fish buffet, seafood and raw or grilled shellfish and live music. “Puglia in Piazza del Borgo”, with its typical gastronomic products of Apulia and its craftsmanship, is the perfect experience to enjoy a magical night of music, tradition and special Apulian dishes. These are just some examples of our gastronomic offer, all accessible to clientele in half board regime.

Finally, as you rightly spotted, the charming and friendly service provided at Borgo are, in my opinion, necessary ingredients to bring into being a union of first-class accommodation, cuisine and facilities, able to satisfy the most demanding of clientele.

If you do decide to visit Borgo Egnazia again, hopefully we can meet in person and you would have a chance to witness the amelioration- Borgo Egnazia is ready to provide unforgettable holidays to its visitors.

Kind Regards,

Just got back from 5 days (4 nights but just couldn't drag ourselves away on the day of check out) at Borgo Egnazia. What can you say - this has got to be one of the best luxury family hotels I have ever stayed at. We loved everything about it - from the Borgo area (we took a grand townhouse - excellent set up with kids) to the tennis coaching (and it not being very busy so access wasn't a problem), to the great food and reasonably priced wine, to the amazing spa, great pools, wonderful kids club. In sum, an excellent choice and so pleased we went. Of note has to be the kids club - it was great and the late night events for the older kids (our eldest is just below 7 and we couldnt drag her away till 10pm every night) was a very welcome and well executed set up - and the whole Borgo villa set up. A little worried when we booked about the space as we couldn't get the two bed version, we were very pleasantly surprised. They are a great base for a family and so well done. If they continue to invest to maintain this resort as they clearly have in setting it up then I can see many trips back over the years. Finally I have to mention the staff - never have i stayed somewhere so high end / large and felt less like a customer. Nothing was too much trouble and everything was flexible. A great great attribute and one that makes this place really stand out. We will be back!

It's the attention to details and general positivity of the hotel staff that make this a special place, along with the beautiful setting. We were on half board but decided to eat out a few nights, but on every occaision the food never matched the fare served up in the hotel. The seperate family and adults pools was a big plus for us. The "rocky beach" was also a fantastic setting. Casano the AC Milan and Italian footballer was there and definitely enjoying the place. Great local wine selections at reasonable prices. A blissful experience.

We chose the Borgo Egnazia for a family holiday, 4 teenage children. Great place, we stayed in an Imperial Villa which was stunning, basement lounge with large tv ( unused on our visit) great bedrooms, pool also good. Service here is impeccable, from the late night arrival, to when we left, the service was faultless. Beach club (rocky beach) was the favourite, photos on line dont do it justice. You can stand in the small bay if you are over 5 ft 4 and its a sand floor. We tried basis Scuba and kayaking, all went well with the teens. Food is good, breakfast buffet great, they will make crepes etc on request, all good. Evening meals were good, the best being st the beach restaurant. Food costs a lot when there is 6 people, be careful! On a few small negative points: the pool restaurant was unable to cope when busy, and stopped serving lunch from the poolbar as they could not keep up, we were told they would only take orders if you sit by a pool bed. Go over to the hotel bar and ordervthere, its quicker and calmer! We went to Alborobello, a good couple of hours there in an interesting Trulli town. Fantastic place for families, and Spa great for grown ups.

Lovely hotel, beautiful accommodation excellent facilities.

Was here on a holiday and in one of the garden villa’s, which was simply out of if this world, stunning.

We went with Scott Dunn (I believe the only English tour operator for the hotel) and was looked after by their representative Zoe, who could not do enough to make our stay individual and personal, nothing was too much trouble and took everything in her stride. Was able to recommend, restaurants in neighbouring town’s and local excursions to go on and even did our shopping for us when we first arrived.

Children’s facilities and club are excellent. Staff all speaks English and get very involved in all activities. On the day’s that my little one went, she baked some local biscuit’s and took a visit to the on-site chef’s garden.

Choice of restaurants is good and all offer excellent choices.

Can’t recommend this hotel enough and will defiantly be booking to go back next year.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Borgo is the Italian word for village. Borgo Egnazia, a stroll from the Adriatic Sea on the fertile plains of Puglia, is a village of dreams hewn in the beautiful white Tufo stone of the region. If it had existed in ancient times it would have been the eighth wonder of the world! But although it looks as if time, sun, footsteps and sea breezes have weathered its facades, Borgo Egnazia is a 21st century creation that sparks the imagination with its characterful buttresses and the higgledy-piggledy layout of the casette around the central Piazza. You arrive at La Corte (the court), which sits like a manor house or Moorish Castle to the side of the village. It's a castle of troubadours and sanctuary though, not of battlements. Here are rooms where you can take your sojourn with us, descending the sweeping stairway to enjoy the bars, restaurants, terraces, spa and pools as well as the many secreted, gently lit bowers in a labyrinth of corridors that make it seem as if you had entered the Temple of Aphrodite! Alternatively you can choose to stay in one of the Borgo's casette, a deux or as a family of four, which nestle around two piazzas down bougainvillea- scented alleyways that you would swear had been there since the days of carts and horses. Larger families might prefer to take one of our 29 villas that fringe the village with their own plunge pools and shaded gardens, lush with oleander and rosemary. Borgo Egnazia is hard to describe. It's a place like nowhere else, with so much thought having gone into every detail. You have to come and experience it for yourself. What we have done is given glimpses about the many characteristics of the place. We hope you enjoy these. If they conjure in your mind the sense of a place rich in earthy provenance, splendid in its imagining and deeply restorative in its comforts and perfection, then our words will be doing some justice to the reality of Borgo Egnazia. Vair Spa Vair is emphasizing the role played by internal beauty, which illuminates each one of us and never deteriorates.
