“One of the most beautiful place I've ever been”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

I spent 4 days at Borgo Egnazia for a friend's wedding and I must recommend that place!
The design is absolutely charming and make you feel in peace as soon as you check in at the reception. Staff was very busy so you sometimes had to be patient, the food (and especially the breakfast buffet - fruits, ham, eggs, bakery, AMAZING stracciatella… !) met our -high- expectations and the rooms were perfectly cleaned and comfortable. There are 2 swimming pools with one dedicated to kids, which is much appreciated as you don't want to hear screaming while you relax by the pool!
This resort is absolutely magnificent and I hope to come back soon.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback.

I am very pleased to read that you have had such a fantastic experience with us and your time was so well enjoyed.
Borgo Egnazia is a place for adults as for children. They have their own spaces so parents can relax knowing that their children are enjoying their activities and the couples know that the Borgo is enough big to don’t be disturbed by children playing or shouting.
We look forward to having you back with us in the future.

Regards

It IS a beautiful resort in its design and quiet settings. The lukewarm or not exactly friendly altitude of its reception staff undermines your joy of being there. Being in a place of nowhere, your mobility to anywhere is really limited if you do not have a car. Borgo's restaurants open at 7:30 am for breakfast. Lunch is only until 2:30 pm. Dinner is from 7 pm in the trattoria and 7:30 pm in the restaurant. Food is basically fresh but not exactly great. Waiting and housekeeping staff are fine. But the reception really spoils your fun. You may not want to look at stern faces with staring eyes every time you need to talk to them.

Room Tip: Ask for first floor rooms and not the ground floor ones.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for choosing Borgo Egnazia for your stay and thank you for your feedback because it helps us improving our staff and organization.
I’m really sad to hear that you didn’t find the reception staff you expected but thanks for your valuable comment , we will organize motivational trainings for who we identify need it.
It’s a shame because we always try to take people who really love their job and have passion for customer care. It is difficult someone complain for the service they provide because the smile is in our culture and we are proud of that.
We are just 5 minute from the beach and from Savelletri and Fasano, famous summer holidays places. We can always arrange cars to travel around because we are close to some of the most beautiful old towns in Italy, such as Ostuni, Cisternino, Martina Franca,Lecce..etc… and we have transfers every 10 minutes but mostly of our guests chose Borgo Egnazia for the relax you find in it.
I apologize if you had the impression that our food it is not exactly great. In our restaurants you find just the highest quality. We have our staff that every morning goes to the market to choose the best products of the Italian and Apulian traditions.
Regarding our set Times for the meals, we schedule these accordind to the standard times you find everywhere but you will always be served food at the bar, at the beach club, at the pools and in your room. Of course we love to hear your feedback because it will help us understanding our guests needs.
We hope to see you again at Borgo Egnazia which thanks to you and all guests’ s comments will improve its services.

Best Regards.

The resort manages to not look like a resort at all and it does not feel like a huge sprawling complex - I loved the look and feel of the whole place and it is slightly hard to believe that it is all fake and not a real Puglian village! We stayed in a casseta in the Borgo which was fantastic with 2 children as our rooms were on separate floors and we had a huge 40 foot enclosed terrace on the ground floor with lemon and orange trees (completely safe for young children as surrounded by high walls) and also a large rooftop terrace off the main bedroom. It was competely quiet at night which was bliss. It felt like having a beautiful mini villa with all the hotel perks like twice daily maid service and the large pools/kids club etc. Although there is a small 'kitchenette' in the casettas, no crockery/cutlery provided other than cups for the coffee machine so you need to ask for some supplies if you plan on eating in. Service by the pools is excellent and there are copious amounts of fresh towels and someone will always help put up an umbrella etc - we were there during half term and there was never any issue getting sun loungers no matter what time of day we arrived at the various pools. Indeed, I am sure the resort was very busy the week we were there but it never felt that way which is a testament to the way it which is had been designed and laid out. Special shout out to all of the nice guys on valet duty at the front of the hotel - our kids loved the golf buggies and they would always run us back to our room in a buggy even though it was actually quite a short walk. The guest services people could use some training about hotel facilities/golf etc - whenever we called with a query, it was always answered with I don't know, we will call you back but that call back didn't always materialise.

The Kids Club is wonderful and was one of our main drivers in booking Borgo Egnazia - if your children are over 3, it is free of charge. The great thing about the club is that it is entirely flexible in that you didn't need to pre-book and could drop children off for a few hours and then pick them up or drop in so they could do the daily baking activity (pizza, cookies, foccacia) and then come back out again. The ladies who work in the Kids Club were all very sweet and the club seemed to have a very high staff to child ratio. It is a nice big space with lots of room for different activities like face painting and balloon modelling and the club also arranges outings to the beach club - I think I only saw the children watching cartoons on one day of the whole week. Our children got lots of hugs and kisses goodbye on their last day from all of the girls which was very sweet. If you book a babysitter for evenings, it will be one of the girls from Kids Club which is nice as your children get to see a familiar face (we had the lovely Rosetta on the 2 nights we used the baysitting service). The downside is that the babysitters are €20 p/h which seemed relatively steep but at least you have the assurance of it being someone who is employed by the hotel.

The more formal restaurant, Due Camini was excellent - we ate there twice (without children)and were very impressed with the quality of the food/presentation and the service. It is relatively expensive but worth it and the wine list is excellent (plenty of crisp white Puglian whites for around €25 a bottle). If you have cocktails in the bar first, you get lots of nice little snacks/tapas to go with your drinks. Less impressive is the more casual family restaurant down by the Borgo pool, La Frasca - the pizzas are very good and that is what I would stick to there (15€ each). We went one night when the buffet was offered (or the pizza menu) but the buffet was pretty woeful. To be fair, I am not a fan of buffets at the best of times but this one certainly did nothing to convert me - for what was on offer, it was overpriced at €50 pp and the desserts in particular were all terrible (other than the fresh fruit).Service is also a lot more hit and miss in La Frasca both at dinner and breakfast. Also, there were a lot of children at dinner in La Frasca which is something to bear in mind if you are without children and would like to dine in peace! There is also buffet style tea for small kids served from 6 to 8.30 pm just next to La Frasca but again overpriced at 18€ as a 3 year old is only going to eat so much and the offering is pretty uninspiring - far better to get a bambini pizza for €10 which smaller kids can probably share. It is really worth having a car so you don't have to eat in the resort every night and to have some variety- Savelletri is a sweet little village on the sea only 5 mins away by car with plenty of dining options and gelaterias for the children. Osteria del Porto and Sapore di Sale are right next to each other and both good if you have young children in tow as are nice and low key. Great seafood in the Osteria despite the slightly naff nautical theme/plastic menus with a surprisingly decent/good value wine list. Without kids, Pescheria 2 Mare and La Madellena were more high end options in Savelletri and looked lovely but not really possible with young kids who don't yet eat seafood.

The downside of Borgo Egnazia is the cost but this will already be obvious to anyone who has been on the hotel's website. I realise I've included a lot of pricing in this review but only because it was one of the things which I had no feel for before I went, since it is not evident from the webite. However, it is all certainly worth it if you have children of kids cub age and we really enjoyed our week in Puglia. Overall, would love to return.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your review.

We really appreciate you enjoyed your stay at Borgo Egnazia but I am sorry to read that certain aspects of your visit were not to your satisfaction. When it starts the season we always provide Leading trainings to the staff but rest assured that we will take the appropriate actions to improve our Guest staff knowledge.
Your notes about La Frasca buffet and The Puccetta portions will be readily seen, we will be addressing those points straight away but our overall prices depend on the high quality and the products freshness we use, as you will understand with have really high costs.
we look forward to having you back with us in the future.

Exceptional in the literal sense of the word as I certainly don't believe there is something quite like it in Europe..and its the kind of review I hesitated to post for fear of sharing a great 'secret'.

The resort is magnificent but the website is fairly accurate about it..if you like it..you'll love the resort..

Location is great...Full of sun for a large part of the year...reasonable construction cost and labor costs mean you can have a fantastic resort at a 'reasonable price'..Staff is super friendly and plentiful. Close to the sea...Great region and plenty of activities for everyone...

We had a villa...when housekeeping came to do the room, it was 4-5 people, and the villa was impeccable in 30 mins or so..

But what really made a difference for us was the attention to details and the kid friendly approach...

In the villa, we had tons of kid friendly stuff...a baby cot obviously...barriers for the stairs..barriers on the bed and even a mini park for the little one...

And then there was the child clubs....full of life...plenty of staff..always happy and ready to play...cooking..arts& crafts and numerous games...I had read in a review that it was a mess and there was too much tv...not sure we are talking of the same...In the teens club we were asked how we would like to deal with video games and we had a frank discussion about it which was always respected...I barely saw the tv on in the kids club...Anyhow we certainly have done many kids club in the best resorts in the maldives or mauritius and the kids came back claiming this was their favourite...and their best holidays ever...(and a special thank to Carlo)....

The only negative is the sea...yes its not the maldives...and that would be my only warning to someone coming here..the seaside is not paradisiac...but its there...(at least the fresh air of the sea :))

We didn't use much of the restaurants but the buffet breakfast and the pizzas were great.

We will be back (alternating with maldives ;)

Dear Guest,

I am very happy to read that you have had such a great stay with us, that the service you have received was so impeccable and outstanding. Our Mini Club is driven by people that love their job and know how to make children happy. We are against videogames and Tv because Borgo Egnazia is plenty of places to live and enjoy, also by children.
Regarding the Maldives, we would love to be compared with them but we can compete in Europe where we have the largest variety of landscapes and some of the most beautiful beaches.
Thank you very much once again for your kind words, and I look forward to having you with us.

Best regards

The Borgo Egnazia is a gorgeous Italian Village style hotel. The resort is sprawled out over countryside and olive groves, it it not right on the ocean but if you cross over the main road in front of the resort there are lovely areas for swimming and the hotel has a beach club and private swimming areas.
I found the whole place to be just gorgeous, the swimming pools are breathtaking, the rooms were just gorgeous, our bathroom in our suite in particular was one of the best I have had in a hotel, huge tub with little shutter windows looking out over the olive groves. Room was always immaculately made up. All very luxurious.
I would state that the resort is particularly good for families as there were lots of children but it is so big and spread out that if, like us you are not there with children, it would not bother you, there is a separate family pool.
All the restaurants were lovely but you can venture out to some great and cheap little restaurants around the area and eat fabulous fresh seafood on the water.
The breakfasts in the hotel were the best part, an amazing Italian buffet of the freshest produce I could have ever seen.
Hire bikes and ride around the grounds, that is how we got from A-B and visited our friends who were staying in big groups in some of the villas, which were also stunning with huge private swimming pools, if you have a bigger group of family or friends and want to stay together, villas are the way to go, they were amazing.
All the staff were lovely, although service it is very relaxed and no body was overbearing, you just get what you ask for with no fuss, very Italian.
This is a lovely and special resort, a great place to truly relax and unwind, it is so peaceful and naturally beautiful. If you are visiting Puglia I would really recommend staying at Borgo Egnazia.

The hotel is great for European standards. We were here for a 2 night stay for our minimoon after we wed in Italy. Upon arrival there wasn't really much attention from the staff and there weren't any special things for our honeymoon. Other cons: we ended up paying €1500 for our 2 night stay and we had an issue in the middle of the night as someone tried to enter our room and ended up leaving the front door open. We told the staff upon check out and they explained that it was not possible but would look into it. My wife was frightened after this ordeal and couldn't sleep for the rest of the night. They didn't offer us anything for this frightening experience just asked for my credit card details. After checking out we went for lunch at their family restaurant where it took 45 minutes to get our food and we watched other couples and families, who arrived after us, get their food before us. I am not one to look for compensation but the lack of care is not acceptable. The best person in the hotel is flavio (concierge) who at least offered me a coffee.
Tennis lesson was sub standard. I had a youn girl who couldn't speak much English and didn't teach me anything. The main coach who was on the court next to me looked like he was quality so would recommend that you ask for him.
Some of the pros: particular staff were great - the concierge, some of the waiters in the restaurant (but worth noting on 1 occasion we had to ask for the bill 4 times), the baggage handlers and the pool staff. The hotel is well decorated and always kept clean. If I had children this would be a hotel to visit.
Overall we experienced the spa, the restaurants and had tennis lessons. I would have liked a bit more of attention from them for the things that went wrong. I think reception staff could be more accommodating.
I would not visit or recommend this hotel until I get a real explanation. They pride themselves on being a small family run hotel so one would think that they'd care about guests and their experiences a bit more.

Dear Mr.Khan,

I would love to Thank you for choosing us for your Honeymoon and We are really sorry that you didn’t find us more accommodating but as I already explained on my email to you, we welcomed you with a Vip Honeymoon amenity that I’m sad you didn’t appreciate.
I can only assume that there was a malfunction in the door lock, that maybe was not bolted from the inside, however rest assured that Borgo Egnazia is a very secure environment and we have never had any issues with the safety of our guests. I really apologise if your wife couldn’t sleep and was frightened.
Regarding your tennis lesson you would have probably been assigned to the wrong teacher according to your standard or level. I can assure that all of them are certified and monitored .
I also apologise about the issues you had with our restaurant, you met our maître who could apologize promptly and explained you the delay.
I remind you my invitation to come back and accepting lessons by my personal tennis coach, I wait your answer and I sincerely hope to see you back in Puglia soon, hopefully we can change your mind as we would love for you to have fonding memories of our home for many years to come.

With all my best regards

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Borgo is the Italian word for village. Borgo Egnazia, a stroll from the Adriatic Sea on the fertile plains of Puglia, is a village of dreams hewn in the beautiful white Tufo stone of the region. If it had existed in ancient times it would have been the eighth wonder of the world! But although it looks as if time, sun, footsteps and sea breezes have weathered its facades, Borgo Egnazia is a 21st century creation that sparks the imagination with its characterful buttresses and the higgledy-piggledy layout of the casette around the central Piazza. You arrive at La Corte (the court), which sits like a manor house or Moorish Castle to the side of the village. It's a castle of troubadours and sanctuary though, not of battlements. Here are rooms where you can take your sojourn with us, descending the sweeping stairway to enjoy the bars, restaurants, terraces, spa and pools as well as the many secreted, gently lit bowers in a labyrinth of corridors that make it seem as if you had entered the Temple of Aphrodite! Alternatively you can choose to stay in one of the Borgo's casette, a deux or as a family of four, which nestle around two piazzas down bougainvillea- scented alleyways that you would swear had been there since the days of carts and horses. Larger families might prefer to take one of our 29 villas that fringe the village with their own plunge pools and shaded gardens, lush with oleander and rosemary. Borgo Egnazia is hard to describe. It's a place like nowhere else, with so much thought having gone into every detail. You have to come and experience it for yourself. What we have done is given glimpses about the many characteristics of the place. We hope you enjoy these. If they conjure in your mind the sense of a place rich in earthy provenance, splendid in its imagining and deeply restorative in its comforts and perfection, then our words will be doing some justice to the reality of Borgo Egnazia. Vair Spa Vair is emphasizing the role played by internal beauty, which illuminates each one of us and never deteriorates. We are introducing the results of a year's worth of research into an essential theme: The fulfillment of the psyche, that can be searched in a series of extraordinary treatments born precisely from this vision. Before choosing the best tailor-made spa itinerary, our guests often say they would like to feel happier after their treatments. This is why we suggest that you do not miss the life-changing treatments, which are carried out in the friendly and inviting atmosphere at Vair, the innovative and modern Mind & Body Spa surrounded by Puglia's natural beauty.
