Like the Masseria Montelauro ( see my review ), we also stayed at the Carignani in September last year so we were happy to go back. When you go there for the first time it may take a bit to find the place, though if you have a navigator (and we didn't ) it should be no problem, don’t be put you off as the visit is well worth it.
As you approach the Masseria from the main road it looks like a monolith in the middle of the countryside, a true masseria, in every sense ie. a “ fortified farmhouse”. You arrive to the main entrance via a small country lane and the masseria lies snuggled in between fields of olive groves and other fruits.
Usually the owners, one of three sisters, will be there greet you, as they are always busy about the place and always extremely helpful. Being still very young the three siblings have done a masterful job in restoring such a complex structure. On two sides of the large picturesque courtyard they have built in an L-shape the single storey guest apartments, the interiors of which are decorated in traditional style and have full amenities.
Another wing, which last year was just a store room, has been converted into a resting and breakfast area, with a large external terrace if you want to eat outside. Hats off, that in a space of one year they managed to complete a great restoration job.
The Carignani is only a bed and breakfast establishment, but only 20 minutes away lies Gallipoli with its myriad restaurants, and there are also plenty of restaurants in the small towns and villages in the surrounding area.
Highly recommended in my view, and also only about 20 minutes away by car is a visit to the beach near Gallipoli, called Baia Verde. In my opinion it’s the closest you’ll get in europe to being in the carribean. I really enjoyed a lounge bar on the beach called Zen, and had an unforgettable experience: sipping my Mohito on the roof terrace relaxing and watching the sun slowly disappearing into the Ionian sea.
The Masseri Carignani has I believe been active as a B & B for just two years, they sprung us a nice surprise this year with the creation of a new breakfast area, who knows maybe if we visit them again soon they will spring another surprise, little birdie told me maybe a swimming pool.!!!
