“Stunning views however not what I expected”
Reviewed 4 November 2012 via mobile

On arrival you could see it was perched upon a picturesque location. On being shown our room which had two single beds the room was tiny cold and very dark. At night there was the sound of a pump and constant dripping which was never explained and made rest impossible. It was such a shame to have such stunning views which couldn't be seen from the bedroom. For a retreat rest is so important and essential as this was my reason for coming here. We were never given another option for a different room so ended up moving mattresses to the yoga room the second night in order to get some rest. I didn't feel this was value for money and I was so disappointed.

Dear Kath,

We are sorry to hear your stay at Amarant was not a restful experience. We are always very careful to explain that a few rooms do not have views, we supply facilitators with detailed room layouts and descriptions for participant room placements. This is the first time there has been any indication of that room being noisy. We have had many people express how much they love that particular room. However, now that we have been made aware we are in the process of fully investigating any noise issues with either the pump and or night dripping sounds. Please be assured these issues can be addressed yet the room not having a view we can not. We believe the heating was turned on in the room and fires had been lit since 9.00am, we are very aware of warmth being up so high in the mountains.

I have been made aware that one of our staff met with you after your first night to discuss the issues and we are sorry that no alternative was arranged on the spot and that you were left to find a solution. In hindsight an offer of off-site accommodation near by would have been the most obvious solution at the time however how would this have effected the whole retreat experience?

We do believe we offer a valuable experience at Amarant Retreat in all our offerings especially as a venue for hire which was the case in your weekend. Again we are sorry this was not sorted out at the time.

Amarant is perched up on the hillside of the Yarra Valley. A series of gravel roads leads you from the valley up into the hillside.

The property is a house with communal shared areas as well as a completely separate area for the owners. The house is across a number of levels with bedrooms at the top, living and dining rooms in the mid and 'conversation pits' around a fire and a huge picture window looing out over the valley at the bottom. The views are just amazing.

We had dinner on the Friday night in the place which was excellent with a wine menu to match. On sat the owners had put on a minibus down to the local pub for another great meal.

The owners, Rhonda and Mark were great. They showed us round including all the facilities of the lodge (DVDs, books and games to borrow) as well as providing recommendations on where to go and what to visit. They are able to advise well around not only the normal attractions of the area but a more tailored itinerary depending upon preferences.

Its a great escape, I absolutely would recommend it. Very very relaxing and absolutely the most comfortable bed ever.

We stayed at the Amarant over the Easter weekend as a family of four.
To get to the house you drive up a series of winding roads, going further and further into wilderness. From where it is perched you can see right over the forest and beyond to the mountains in the distance. The actual house once won an architectural award – you can see why! Everywhere there are little balconies and cushiony areas to curl up in, and they all seem to have gorgeous, lush views. We were very impressed with the beds; very comfy. They told us that normally they have an in-house chef, but during our visit she was competing in a horse riding comp. We didn’t mind at all. The owners arranged dinner for us at an award winning pub which I highly recommend for its lamp-lit atmosphere. The Amarant owners (a married couple) provide a high level of service. Whether you want a chat, or something to do for the day, they’ll be there. They drove us places and directed us places – we were both surprised and grateful for. Often in Victoria/Australia, you’re shown to your room and left to your own devices. I would suggest that in the Yarra Valley it makes your trip a whole lot more fun if you have people to direct you to cellar door wineries, local spas and forest trails. They’ve also got an amazing conference room, not that we had any use for it. The only half-way critical thing I can say about Amarant, is that it ought to have a spa or a swimming pool. I suppose I must remember it’s an eco retreat but a spa in the greenery would go a long way. I recommend this place for people who like a little luxury, great food and lots of wine. Oh, and while you're there read the book called Amarant, it’s about a botanist and it’s what inspired the name of Amarant Retreat.
