My son and I were unfortunate in that we were only able to spend a single night at the Flycatcher Inn. Christine (owner) is a wonderful host and we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with her during our visit about all kinds of things - she's extremely knowledgeable about the local area, as well as the Maya world past and present in general.

The "casita" we stayed in was immaculate, comfortable, and charming. We thought the decor was exceptional, including a terrific local hammock that my son was able to sleep in for part of the night, by hanging on the heavy duty hooks provided to let it run from wall-to-wall. Lots of fun.

Highly recommended - I can't wait to return for several more days at the Flycatcher Inn! Definitely one of the highlights of a trip to the Yucatan.

I spent one night at the Flycatcher Inn while visiting Uxmal and the other sites along the Ruta Puuc, and would highly recommend it to anyone who plans to be in the area. My room was large, bright, and charmingly furnished with lots of lovely touches and lots of windows, from which I could observe the surrounding trees with their myriad birds. English-speaking staff (including Rosa) were very helpful and Kristine was kind enough to offer some excellent advice by e-mail beforehand when I requested her assistance in planning my time in the area. Breakfast was delicious and very fresh — coffee or tea, juice, a bowl of fruit, toast, and a perfectly done omelet. Another wonderful feature of the Flycatcher is its well-marked nature trail: Do consider making time to visit it, as it is quite lovely!

We're not hotel people, so we spend a great deal of time researching B&Bs wherever we travel. Occasionally we'll stumble upon an out-of-the-way B&B that deserves special mention.

You can't visit the Yucatan peninsula without seeing Uxmal and the terrific Puuc Route, so the trick was to find something suitably central to both.

The Flycatcher Inn, located in Santa Elena just a few kilometers from Uxmal, turned out to be very pleasant indeed. We got lucky in that nobody else was staying there at the time save for a nice French couple. The grounds are spectacular, the room was cozy (nice shower), and we even had a little shared patio to relax on.

The hostess, an ex-patriot from Oregon (I think), was very kind and very helpful in planning our days (in fact, had it not been for her, we wouldn't have discovered a fabulous hidden cenote, far removed from the oily tourist hordes). Her staff was tireless. This joint is run by professionals.

There are two (very) quaint little restaurants within walking distance (Santa Elena is tiny), and the food was decent.

Top marks. Reserve here with impunity!

I would go back to Flycatcher Inn in a heartbeat. Our stay of three days at the Flycatcher in Santa Elena -- including the area ruins we visited while staying there -- was the highlight of our trip to Yucatan. Clean, simple, comfortable lodging; thought-provoking, informative conversations around the breakfast table with Kristine, the co-owner, that led to insights about the community and the country. Fresh, delicious breakfast including great Chiapas coffee. Just a short walk down the road is the Pickled Onion, with reasonably priced, tasty lunches and dinners, including perfect box lunches to take along to Uxmal and other major and lesser ruins a short drive away. Even closer, see the mummies at the tiny museum in the Santa Elena church, and the Flycatcher has its very own nature and ruins trail.

There is a little oasis in the sleepy town of Santa Elena a short ride from Uxmal and the Puuc route: the Flycatcher Inn. The Inn is a peaceful refuge in harmony with its unspoiled jungle surroundings, and combines the best in traditions for hospitality and value. The Inn is welcoming and well maintained. Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean and decorated with lovely Mexican artifacts. Breakfast is superb and a good opportunity to learn from hosts and guests alike. Kristine and Santiago represent a wonderful fusion of the US and Mayan cultures, and in the Flycatcher, you can feel their dedication and love. Will definitely return!

We spend three nights here last month. Kristine was a jewelery designer in the U.S. and she designed this B &B with exquisite attention to detail. Her husband, Santiago, built all of the handsome wrought-iron furniture and lighting fixtures. The two of them serve a lovely breakfast with delicious, healthy food and delightful conversation. Each room has a comfortable patio with places to sit and enjoy the lovely garden. Each room has a hammock in addition to the bed. Excellent lunch and dinners are available at The Pickled Onion just down the road. Valerie will prepare excellent box lunches to take with you when you tour nearby ruins, markets, and haciendas. There's a fascinating little museum behind the Santa Elena church on the hill near the FlyCatcher that is worth a visit.

We stayed at the Flycathcer for 10 days which gave us time to thoroughly explore the Mayan ruins in the surounding area (Puuc Route) and to visit the cities of Merida and Campeche as well. The Inn is located conveniently off a main road, in the village of Santa Elena (no bank or ATM, no post office, no gas station) a 10 or 15 minute drive from Uxmal. The daily breakfasts were suberb and included fresh fruit plates, yogurt, omelets, homemade breads etc. Our room was small but very comfortable and very clean and it was very reasonbaly priced at 400 pesos per night. (There are larger rooms and a suite available at higher prices) Our hosts, Kristine and Santiago helped us to plan our days and their recommendations were extremely helpful. Santiago grew up in Santa Elena and Kristine has been there for more than twenty years. One warning. Kristine had told us that his part of the Yucatan peninsula is very rural and that you really do need a car to take maximum advantage of your trip. She was right.! This was a very friendly and welcoming place and we highly recommend it for those who would like to get away from the resort atmosphere of Cancun and the surrounging area. At some of the sites we visited, we were practically by ourselves. Check out the Flycatcher's website. It is one of the best I have seen.
