Kichanga Lodge
Reviewed 24 January 2013

I couldn't have found a more perfect Lodge! A spectacular site with powder white sand, turquoise waters and clear blue skies and brilliant stars at night.

The staff was warm and friendly and the food was, for the most part, delicious! Yes, it is warm, yes there are mosquito, yes things may take a bit longer... So, be flexible, bring repellent, bring patience and be prepared for the heat... but YES it is Spectacular!

The lodge is tastefully and organically designed to fit beautifully into the environment! The staff will do all they can to make your stay as comfortable as possible. We had a problem with mosquitoes the first night and after talking to our waiter, George, (the best waiter in the world) he arranged that the housekeeping staff did extra spraying in our Beach Villa and we had great nights sleep after that! We even ended up breaking the bathroom mirror in an attempt to slap a mosquito. The mirror had been replaced by the time we returned to our villa in the afternoon and the proprietor refused to bill us for the repair.

For a Birthday Diner we made reservations at the Rock Restaurant! The proprietor also helped me make arrangements for the boat ride out to this idyllic little restaurant on the water...and arranged for a birthday cake at no extra charge to us! Excellent food here too!

Take the Jozani Forest tour to see the rare Colobus Kirk Monkeys. If you take the spice tour and Stonetown tour be prepared to tip the various assistants and go to shops and restaurants where the tour guide gets his commissions.

Back to the lodge.. caution on the beach, there are sea urchins, the hotel staff provides rubber shoes but watch your step on low tide. I did get a 20 minute sting from jelly-fish but not life threatening and again the staff will provide you with vinegar to take away the sting. Remember this is Africa and it is a different environment but it is Breathtaking and the lodge is a jewel of peace and quiet and relaxation! Highly recommended!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Beach Villa 1 up on the cliff! spectacular and exclusive view down on to the beach...

Transfer from Stone town is good on smooth roads, the last mile is on an unmade dirt track. About one hour in total. A lovely welcome from staff with glasses of mango juice. The main building is set high above the beach and is open on 3 sides to catch the ocean breezes. There is a bar, lounge area and dining area. Internet area is in the lounge. It is not free as in many other Tanzanian hotels! $15 for 5 nights, it is a poor signal, but enough for basic email.
The majority of staff are pleasant and friendly.
Our room no 2, looked out over the beach with a set of well made steps down to the sand. There is a paved and fenced patio out front, also a settee and coffee table. There is also a swinging bed, but it felt unsafe and would not sit straight, possible roll off onto patio! A local donkey brays, most of the night. Water in room is not replenished, suggest you buy a carton at a supermarket on way to resort.
The room has a large comfortable bed, with good mosquito nets. A desk and chair, the shower room is basic, but adequate: trickle shower, basin, toilet and vanity surface for toilet bags etc. minimal toiletries supplied. Large walk-in wardrobe/changing room with hanging and shelves.
There is another bed on a mezzanine, we did not use it. Mosquitos were a problem, but asked for spray to respray room at bedtime and it helped. Gaps at roof level inbetween window screen and ceiling. Bed linen changed daily and towels when you need. Laundry service: 8-24hours depending on weather. Roof beautifully made of palm leaves, a lovely rustic beach retreat look.
Gather at bar/lounge at 19.00 for per dinner drinks, dinner served from 19.30.
Meals are buffet style, with a good selection: dinner of several vegs and 2 meat choices. Deserts are fruit and 2 cakes/tart etc. Breakfasts: buffet again with eggs and pancakes cooked to order, also fruit, pastries, breads, juice, water tea and coffee. Lunches ordered at breakfast time from menu. A good plateful with fries. Afternoon tea on beach at 16.30 tea/coffee with cake and biscuits. Nice touch. Overall: good food with a decent selection.

The beach is lovely, whitest of white sand with very fine grains. There are hundreds of shells! The coral reef is several hundred metres off shore with a well walked on reef closer in to beach. There is a small amount of broken glass and an odd bit of rubbish. The beach is raked daily after high tide. Reef shoes advised. There are many black urchins on nearest reef beware, also saw bluebottle jellyfish, but only a few.
Paths around resort are well lit after dark and good and even. Resort dogs enjoy a pat in the evening!
The grounds are well looked after with flowering shrubs. A troupe of black colobus monkeys visits, an added bonus.
Masai guards are visible around resort, the whole place feels very safe.
Good place to chill out after safari or work pressures, but it is a long trip to go anywhere.
It is possible to walk to The Rock restaurant at low tide, but you need reef shoes as there is coral to cross. Takes 35 mins to walk at low tide or $15 return in local taxi.

Un- airconditioned in sweltering heat. No breeze in January. Thought we would pass out. Don't leave anything at your Room-Assigned table...they will steal it. (even though you left it at the table marked with your hut -room number on it! You will have to demand it be given back to you!

If you want to eat lunch, you better order it during breakfast! I think they must go 40 miles to the store before each meal!

Massage on the beach is in an enclosed hut...you will pass out if you stay there for 10 minutes...and they have a total of 2 colors of fingernail polish for a manicure! what a joke!

Room Tip: All rooms are un airconditioned. You will Sweat all night. Good luck!

Hello,
as often happens, especially in small places where you feel a little bit At "home", clients forgets things on the table, at the beach or in the club house, it's normal you are on holidays i. The staff of Kichanga Lodge when they find some objects around , they just bring them to reception waiting to be claimed . This is a very normal in any hotel in the world . To Argue we did not return what you were missing is offensive.
In reply to the delay of the service time at lunch, it's good to know that in the initial briefing with the guests, we note that around 11 o'clock in the morning the waiters collect the lunch orders, and also the time required for lunch . This system avoids to wait when you arrive for your lunch many of our clients don't want to loose to much time at lunch , they might want to go down to the beach, back to the bungalow or out in excursion so in this way it makes thing very easy. Of course if you prefer to order when you arrive at the table for us it is not a problem you just need to wait the lunch proportional to the time required for cooking. It is no surprise if we see some clients arriving for lunch later and been served before. Kichanga Staff is with our group since many years If you read our guest book , reviews so many people really love our staff. The Zanzibarian people f are so polite and genuine it is in there nature and for all of us it is a pleasure to try and do are very best to make always all our clients very happy.
This is our job make our clients happy on there holidays.
We are very sorry that we have not managed with you , personally I think that Kichanga Lodge is for a mass market and for sure it was not the place that you were looking for. Thank you very much and all the best, Nigel

Spent a week here. The place is wonderful, beautiful views and spectacular beach but most important the staff always greets you with a smile and ready to assist you with whatever one needs. I was looking for a place to unwind and relax from the stress of everyday life and definitely found it here.
The lodge feel really puts you in a relaxing mood and helps you blend in the culture and surrounding will return

I've lived in Zanzibar for over a year, and Kichanga Lodge is one of the best discoveries I've made here - probably the most beautiful beach too, secluded and quiet so you can really relax and enjoy the sound of the wind in the palm trees. The food was amazing, and there's free tea and cake on the beach in the afternoon. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the beautiful views and kanga-covered cushions make the bar a perfect place to chill out in the evening. The hotel also contributes to the local community through the Kichanga foundation, which helps provide more education and opportunities for children in the village. Definitely recommended!

Staff very pleasant and helpful, food- average. Acommodation-clean, basic but in my case, the only bungalow with 20 steep steps up to it! That, combined with the steps to and from the beach led to me averaging 360 steps (up & down} per day! Very remote and tours organized by hotel veery expensive. No snorkeling from the beach, but some huge rollers so be careful. Met some interesting people and even, courtesy of the staff, a few words of Swahili. An experience!

Room Tip: Dont believe the blurbs on web sites about Kichanga!

A really lovely location for beach and privacy. Staff are really friendly and helpful so absolutely no complaints there.Bungalow was nice, but a bit basic for the price we thought. Soft drinks very expensive and you are miles from anywhere so captive market. Bad show in the fact that water is provided on the day you arrive, but after that you have to buy it just to clean your teeth - for the money we thought that was really out of order at $2 a bottle. Apart from that, it really was a lovely location to stay but they do like you to go to bed by about 10 and you are encouraged to sign your tab and stop drinking as soon as possible after dinner. Its 1hr 15mins from Stonetown and a taxi is about $90 dollars return so you need to budget for nights out. The nearby Rock restaurant is superb though and worth a visit. All in all, a lovely place, nice staff but a couple of areas could be improved. I would go back.

Room Tip: Ocean views are mostly lovely but be warned, the view is obscured by trees in the main.
