“Beautiful, quirky beach retreat”
Reviewed 18 January 2014

We loved Kichanga! If you want to feel like you are staying in the real Zanzibar then this is the place for you. We and our kids aged 5 and 8 loved it. The staff are outstanding and really love children. We really felt part of the Kichanga family. The new year's party was fantastic - we dined on the beach and then danced under the stars. Rooms are stunning - large bungalows with much of the furniture sourced and made in Zanzibar. Very quiet beach with plenty of sun loungers. Take your reef shoes though as you have to wade a couple minutes walk to get to the swimming area.
Pool great too with hammocks.

Our kids loved the 3 very friendly but very sleepy dogs too and the dog bed by reception made us chuckle. I do hope that we see more hotels like this appearing who are keen to involve the local community. This hotel runs its own foundation and has funded 2 local schools which you can go and visit. Just briliant!

We had such a relaxing time - it was lovely to have your own beach hut, and the extra touches like beach bags, hats and towels really made a difference. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, and all the food we had was delicious! We were there over New Year 2013/14 and they put on some great entertainment for New Year's Eve, with a buffet down on the beach, a masai dance and acrobatics, and then dancing on the beach into the night. We didn't go on any of the excursions in the end and just lolled on the beach. My favourite thing to do was to go walk out when the tide was out in the morning, and you found a beautiful lagoon before you reach the sea (separated by a sand bank). You had to clamber over a few rock pools and dodge sea urchins (take jelly sandals or similar!) but the lagoon was worth it, beautiful white sand and turquoise clear sea with no waves. And the sea is like bath water!

Watch out for baby jellyfish being swept in by the tide as they can give you a bit of a sting, though nothing life threatening! The bar also makes excellent cocktails, particularly a mean Dawa! Lovely relaxing stay.

It was great to be in a small hotel that did its best to use local materials. Don't expect rows and rows of plastic sunbeds and umbrellas or air conditioning here! Lots of thoughtful touches like straw sun hats and beach bags in the bungalows and a library of books in the main area. Instead of the usual souvenir shop there was an area where you could choose local material to have made within a few hours into trousers, dresses, tops etc. Great if like us you are travelling light. The service was friendly and George was always on hand to make sure we were happy. When we had a minor problem with our room we were promptly upgraded to another bungalow.

Room Tip: It's worth paying the extra to get a bungalow overlooking the sea. The rooms get more of a sea b...

We started a two week visit to Tanzania with a three day stay here. Most beautiful spot to recover from jet lag and start a holiday. Friendly, helpful staff, beautiful beach, lovely bar and restaurant area, and good food. We took day trips snorkel, visit the spice farms, see endemic monkeys in the forest sanctuary and visit Stone Town. Lovely!

Very authentic, thatched roofs, individual bungalows with terraces. The main dining area is great at night with music and good ambience. The food is buffet style, bring your own alcohol. Electricity cuts are common, once a night when we were there in 2010, more so late at night when they are power shedding, so bring a torch if you dont like the dark. All in all a perfectplace to just relax, great pool area, with hammocks, good beach, very relaxed place.

Room Tip: Pick a room with a terrace

My family and I spent a few days at Kichanga Lodge in February 2012. It is quite a trek to get to the lodge but well worth the trip. It is beautifully situated above a lagoon and reef area. Palm trees ring the beach and there is usually a gentle offshore breeze. The staff was very friendly and the owner, Nigel, a real treat to visit. The food was pretty good and it was fun to eat in a buffet style with some of the other guests. Our bungalow was clean and tidy and quite spacious. I would highly recommend you add Kichanga to your stay on Zanzibar.

Really nice to relax here after a 5 night safari. Lovely beach on the Michamvi Peninsula. Snorkelling trip was good too. In comparison to other lodges in Tanzania the food (lunches - as I was half board) & drink was expensive (but not horrendously so & not a great problem) - it's no more remote than the safari lodges so i think here they did exploit the fact that there are no other eating/drinking options nearby.
