This is a little gem. Set above a beach with gently waving palms and a breathtaking azure sea that wows you on your arrival. An extremely friendly reception. The staff remained friendly and helpful throughout our short stay. Excellent accommdation with a balcony overlooking the sea. Don't miss the unforgettable snorkelling trip! A special word for the cook: great food, prepared with love and care! Kichanga lodge is peaceful and authentic. I'm looking forward to my next stay here.

Kichanga has a stunning setting overlooking the ocean and a beautiful, quiet beach in a small cove in front of the hotel-definitely Zanzibar without the crowds. From the moment we arrived we seemed to drop into an abyss of hyper relaxation - the staff are fantastic, very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. George the manager is an excellent host with a good, dry sense of humour. The lodge is airy and bright, the food is fantastic and varied and the pool overlooking the sea was our favourite spot every morning before breakfast. There is a raised seating area with sofas just above the restaurant in the trees where the cat likes to hang out and we found ourselves there playing cards every sunset. Our garden bungalow was spacious and clean and the terrace was a great spot to read and listen to the waves. I honestly couldn't fault the lodge, we also got a great deal by calling ahead the day before. This is Tanzanian hospitality at its very best.

Kichanga is a series of 'bungalows' set above white sand and turquoise waters. The view is truly beautiful. The accommodation is a little tired but perfectly adequate and clean, the staff attended to any problems immediately. We had some quite serious rains which resulted in power cuts but drinks were still served and dinner was still cooked! The general attitude is Hakuna Matata, everything will be fine. George the manager is very attentive and will organise any trips for you. We only tried the snorkelling which was awesome (starfish christmas tree..) as we were only there for a few days and the other trips to Stone town, prison Island etc are all a good 1.5 hour drive away which adds quite a lot of time to the trip and is time away from the beautiful beach!
Take a torch to see your way back to your bungalow and some ear plugs if you think the noise of the waves will keep you awake. The sun is strong so take the sun cream up a notch if you are paler skinned and remember you will still burn when its cloudy if you don't take care.
Look out for the hermit crabs scurrying across the sand, the sand crabs peeking out of the sand and ghost (?) crabs hurtling across the paths towards the beach at night.
We really enjoyed the food - although sometimes had to wait quite a while for it, and for me personally the breakfast lacked a certain something although there are pancakes and omelettes every day and the passion fruit was delicious.
The track to the lodge from the road is quite tough for the taxis to drive along so always factor the slow start and end to any trip away from the lodge into your timings.
There are dogs wandering around the grounds and the restaurant area but they did not bother us at all and seemed very placid.

Room Tip: Some rooms are nearer the sea.

Once off the tarmac, the road to Kichanga Lodge is extremely bumpy. Once that 2 odd min. drive is done, Kichanga Lodge beholds a beautiful and cozy experience for their guests. The staff is very welcoming, helpful and warm. They’re willing to go that extra mile to make your stay memorable. The view of the beach is nothing less than breathtaking. Few downers: a). The room(s) don’t have a safe, the hotel has a central one at the reception. That’s something that can be worked upon. b). Proximity to the beach makes the place vulnerable to mosquitoes. Would be great if something can be done about that.
Overall had a lovely experience here and would definitely recommend it to my friends.

A fantastic stay of 10 nights which will remain memorable in my life. A spectacular beach spot,a lovely staff always smiling and ready to satisfy every request of the guest and a great choice of tours. The breakfast was also various with fresh products. Thank you all staff of Kitchanga!

Room Tip: Ocean view bungalow is the best choice
